I've worked on my own cars for 25 yrs an I'm not a certified mechanic at all. But a decent shade tree mechanic. An I watch a lot of how to videos to help me out an keep up with things an ill say this guy here is the best at breaking the issues down so it's clear an easy to fix your own issues. @@-g.k.4389 your PCM monitors the "evaporative emissions" and is seeing a pressure leak. That is all anyone can tell you without actually seeing the vehicle in person and doing some testing.

This is a great, methodological presentation with feasible DIY techniques. You might also mention the potential deleterious effects of today's pseudo-gasoline, as it had on my old 2000 Explorer system. I had a large leak and checked all lines, replaced the front purge valve, cleaned and reinstalled the canister vent valve - to no avail. Having wanted to avoid lowering the gas tank, I finally checked the tank vent valve and its lower portion/check ball frame had been decimated by the gasoline. Replacing it fixed the problem.... ...for 6 months, at which point the ECL lit up with a code pointing at the canister vent valve. So I removed it and carefully disassembled it down to the valving components, cleaned them thoroughly and reassembled it. All has been fine for a year. ALSO: it would help viewers to find a link to Part 2 in the Description. Thanks for posting the videos.

All too often we tend to guess and replace parts without knowing the root cause. I have actually had many mechanics operate like this. It's not their money, so why not? This is a valuable lesson in not only determining root cause (he actually checked and determined that the part was bad without guessing) but also to know how to verify the fix. This is what separates a mechanic from a guesser. Nice job!

I have a 12+ yo Explorer, I just turned 60 and have been laid-off and on disability for over a year so with time on my hands and little "disposable" income I really need to fix stuff myself as much as possible. You are a true blessing because I haven't worked on my car other than brakes, bearings, and oil changes since I was in my early 20's and they were much simpler back then (1960-70 models). You come with your very own built-in Mighty-Vac! Use it and spare the expense of buying one! That's the way we tested the various diaphragms, dashpots, choke pull-offs etc. in the older systems and should work well for testing most anything that relies on vacuum.

ABSOLUTELY THE BEST informative video for these types of things I have ever run across! I’m “old school” with rebuilding old carbureted, simpler racing engines. This new stuff with all the sensors is a learning experience for me. I love the “CRITICAL THINKING” emphasis on this approach! I am a retired engineer from the aerospace industry and love to see others doing the mind-work instead of replace it and the next thing and the next until it works. Small leak. Watched videos. Replaced gas cap, purge & vent in 1 week of frustration. Old truck had 3 click gas cap. New truck has one click gas cap. Fixed. Started truck, light out before end of driveway. Like you said, "you're looking for something really simple." Thanks for posting videos.

One thing not covered: If it's the Canister Vent Valve rather than the Purge Valve. You'll need to locate the vent valve, which is usually on or near the charcoal canister that is attached (or very close to) your vehicle's gas tank. Disconnect the wire connector and hoses, and try the suck/blow test as he did here, or use a vacuum gauge.

Without having a prior understanding of EVAP leaks (OBD scan code P0456), this video saved me $200+. Most repair facilities insist on charging anywhere from $125-$150 to do a diagnostic check which may or may not include a smoke test and you have to wait 1-2 hours for the test to be completed. This video uses a common sense approach to diagnosing and resolving the issue. The replacement part for my 2012 Ford Escape 4 cylinder engine cost less than $20 on Amazon. TADA!!! Additional KZbin videos also explained how to replace the item in less than 20 minutes.

I took a course at a local repair shop by the shops owner on engine diagnosis and repair, OBD2, etc..and he stressed critical thinking skills in the garage. This is a great example of understanding how something works and using that knowledge to solve the problem. Anyone can replace a part, but diagnosing the problem is often 3/4 of the repair.

Very informative and helpful! Ive got an 04 f150 with the dreaded 5.4 3v that has tons of issues. One appears to be possibly vacuum related. Other day I noticed my fuel tank was under full vacuum (cap are hard to remove!) when was working on it so I believe the leak is pretty substantial.

Diagnosing this on a "new" old lexus. Ironically, it's the same way I fixed it on my pathfinder. By blowing through the purge valve.... No clue on why i thought the lexus would be any different, but this video shows, that I sometimes need to just go back to basics in thinking. Critical thinking has helped me solve problems in the past. I was literally about to go and pressure test the whole system, but I just had forgotten about checking the purge valve, which is the easiest to access first. thanks.

You are still helping us out 6 years later. I immediately took off the purge valve and blew in it and found a leak. Code hasn't come back after it was replaced.

Wow! A smart guy that can teach! Lots of pictures and explanations of your deductions. I have never run in to a problem with this system before. My '08 Prerunner with the V6 threw codes P0441 and P0445 this week, (96k miles). I tightened the gas cap but the CEL has not gone out in 2 short trips. I will erase them and test drive. I can also relax... I know the system now. That was sort of like watching a Sherlock Holmes movie… Not cute or vulgar. Just good thinking. Thank you.

Thank you so much for this video. Financed a 2013 Lincoln MKX. Check engine light P0456 came on. Pepboys did a smoke test and said no leak found yet said my Filler neck tube needs to be replaced. Warranty company and I pay to replace part. Drive almost 300 miles filling up a few times no light. Go to start car in morning light back on. Came across your Video and asked Pepboys why they replaced a part that didn't need to be replaced because it passed the smoke test and then asked if Mechanic even checked the purge valve before performing a smoke test. Manager said mechanic is on vacation so he doesn't know. So manager said he would do a free diagnostic. Well I took it somewhere else since I don't want to void my car warranty by doing work on car myself. They checked purge valve for free because of a friend. Low and behold suction felt and light air when you blow. BAD PURGE VALVE. Called Pepboys and complained about poor mechanic work they said they will replace it for free. Thanks to your video I saved myself from replaceing a fuel pump that didn't need to be replaced. A simple fix that literally takes 5 min. to do and they couldn't even do that right.

Great instruction and explanation of the evap purge system. My Innova 3100j is telling me my 2008 Jeep Patriot N. 5spd manual trans. has a small evap error. The status light shows yellow, and my check engine constantly shows check gas cap even after clearing check engine codes. (I just put in a new gas cap.) My brother said he thought he detected light fuel fume. Thanks for your thorough survey.

I had replaced the purge valve on my 2007 Buick Lucerne about 3 months ago because it was stuck open I normally don't use anything but OEM parts, but GM was on strike at the time and I couldn't get the part, so I installed a Duralast from AutoZone and everything was good until recently when the tighten gas cap and engine light came on. I basically changed out everything in the system and still had a problem. It wasn't only after I saw your video that I pulled the purge valve out and tried sucking air through it and lo and behold there was small leak. Fortunately, the one that I had ordered from GM came in, so I installed it and everything works great. Many thanks! I don't know how long I would have chased this problem. The dealership sure couldn't find the problem : )

It's sad a dealership with a certified mechanic couldn't find a rather simple problem .... leaky valve. Its like fixing cars 101. I would find a new dealership. The good thing about this video is that he explains how the system works, stuff likely to fail and how to test the parts. As a mechanic, when something electrical doesn't work, you look first at the switches. When something leaks checking valves first makes sense. Not to say other things can't or don't fail but you have to start somewhere and you go to highest likelihood of issue first.

Really good explanation. Both videos were really good. Mine turned out to be numerous hoses were leaking. The car is a 1995 and the hoses were brittle, cracked, loose etc. Replaced 3 hoses at the Canister, two on the way to the Solenoid Purge Valve, and the actual EVAP Control Valve just before the Canister's Tank connection were bad.

Thank you sir! I felt finger to canister purge valve while car was on and didn't feel anything. Great suggestion to test old part. I'll get a vacuum gauge and test. In meantime, hope installing a new one will work. Frustrating when you have to go to emission test and can't get codes to disappear. I have 2012 edge with capless gas inlet and have already done all the maintenance to get that to seal tight.

Nicely done and explained. I have the same trouble on my 2003 Jaguar Vanden Plas, and follow this for the more simple way of testing. Sure glad I came across this since it has been since 1974 before joining the service that I have worked on cars. will definitely be a subscriber
