P0141 O2 Heater Failure Diagnosis Video: • P0141 Diagnosing O2 Se...
Well the dreaded Civic is back. Yes this is the one I put the engine in TWICE. It's not back for an engine thought it's back for a speed sensor code as well as harsh shifting and a bouncing speedometer needle. This is a fairly common problem on Hondas but in this case there was come corrosion that came into play. I don't want to give away too much though so you're just going to have to watch the video to get the details on that. I hope you find this video useful, in fact I believe you can use this method on other makes to help verify a speed sensor failure.

Just went through the exact same thing except I drove without the speedometer for a year. Was misfiring bad and replaced plugs and wires and read that the VSS can cause some other problems. It looked easy to replace, but it didn’t work. Your video showed the corrosion issue and my center point broke off in the connector. Finally extracted it and now I have a speedometer. This was GREAT!

Many thanks for this video. I had a 1999 Civic LX in which the speedo would start to bounce up and down while cruising, while at the same time the doors would lock and unlock endlessly (but would not lock when shifting from P to D at the start of a journey). I replaced the speed sensor following the instructions in this video with a $20 aftermarket one from Ebay and, 500 miles or so of driving afterwards, the problem has now gone and not recurred. Thanks again.

Thanks for the nice video. I apparently ravaged some part of my speed sensor mechanism when replacing transmission control cables on a manual 5 speed. I get to survey the damage done tomorrow. Replace the PCV valve! Especially on older cars, and newer vehicles that you want to age much more nicely. It is cheap, easy, and will help keep your engine from becoming pressurized with exhaust, which should've exited through the PCV valve, and forcing oil leaks in various places. Another popular YT mechanic (SK) recommends doing it every three years. When in doubt, just change it. It is cheap, easy and protects your engine!

Thank you. I did some maintenance on my connector last night while putting in a new speed sensor, and as far as I was able to find through experimentation and observation, the rubber gasket should go in BEFORE the white guide clip. I tried putting it on in the same order as you did in the video (white clip first, then rubber seal), but I couldn’t overcome the resistance trying to plug it in, so I pulled it apart and tried gasket first. Still felt some resistance (the gasket probably could have used a bit of lubrication), but when it clicked it felt “right.” Thanks again for this, and your countless other helpful videos.

Thanks for making this video. Helped me figure out exactly what was wrong with my 98 Honda Civic DX. The needle would bounce around in park, at a stoplight, and while accelerating causing the transmission to jerk around if I had the gas pedal pushed down to the wrong spot. Disconnected the sensor and there was coolant inside, car drove fine with it unplugged, and the needle didn't bounce. Gonna put a new vss in tomorrow. Thanks again.

i changed the VSS in my 96 civic manual transmission. It didn't fix the problem but great job showing us how to change it. i had my CEL checked and came back with a ELD problem. after a few days of going through my car and reading through forums i found that i needed to check fuse 15. yup, it was blown. I replaced it and that fixed the problem.

Eric , I have a 98 Honda Civic with 113,000 miles on it...a tow truck busted my transmission and I went for six weeks without the car finally getting a settlement which I thought was fairly good..1600 from Pilgrim Insurance and $500 Triple A.. The man from Triple A was an ex honda employee for many years and told me it was worth saving instead of using the money for a downpayment on another car and big monthly payments, higher insurance since I am retired on fixed income.. I decided to use the mechanc's actuallly across the street who always fix anything I need immediately...They put in the transmission....then showed me the radiator needed replacing....drove well for 2 weeks then bam...now he said alternator so that is being done and he said the fuse that connected to the speedometer was a problem yesterday he said another issue...when he test drove it it sounded at times like it was going into another 'geer'....he told me this morning he is going to put a sensor on it...I have farmers back home who could keep me going but can't...what do you think I should do now? I drive in fear wondering what next will break down and run out of my towing for reasonable fees from Triple A....so I will not drive except to pick up my granddaughter and shop for groceries...

Dear Eric: I would highly recommend that after you clean the corroded connections, you should apply something like Noalox (antioxidant joint compound, sold under many names, used primarily for preventing corrosion on aluminum conductors, but works great on all conductors). And I would also recommend coating the gasket of the connector with that wonderful silicone grease (silicone paste), to help it seal better and help it connect and disconnect easier.

I do not know how to fix a car but I can pretty much, tell you what is wrong. It has been a year this car has been doing everything you say and people who work mechanic from home ofcourse want money and keep telling me to do transmission. I know is the speed and I also need to replace the catalyc converter no one wants to do it, they want to do transmission. So I will stare at video memorize this shit, and do shit on my own.

Also after having similar symptoms i wasted money on a new sensor. One common problem with the 6th gen Honda's is the that the wiring for the vss is getting pinched between the intake manifold and its braket. Get underneath and remove the bracket and check that its free and hasn't been damaged. Just a quick tip before buying a new sensor.

The mystery of the under-dash 7.5A Alternator/SP. Sensor Fuse #15 solved. Thanks. I wondered what SP. stood for. Strangely it supplies the alternator as well. I removed the fuse and started the car and the alternator still charged the battery. I did not drive the car to see if the speedo was nullified. Its a manual so it can't alter the gear change, but I was curious.

This looks so much easier than what was on my vehicle. I had the speed sensor go out on my 96 Ford Taurus a year or so ago. It is about impossible to get that thing where it's located. I actually had to go up from under my car to get the best position at it. Even so, I was only able to get the top electrical portion off of mine as the bottom half corroded into the transmission. At that point I was sick of toying with it that I just took it into the shop. It was such a pain.

if its rear wheel drive then yes. speed sensor lives in the transmission and is calibrated to the recommended tire size. putting bigger tires on makes the speedometer show slower than your actual speed and the smaller the tire the faster your speedometer shows.

Also really surprised Eric didn't use any dielectric grease/electrical grease on the connector. The location and orientation of the sensor is ideal for water to get in, I would not be surprised if many of these sensors appeared to have failed due to corrosion.

depends on what year & what you mean by false speed. for example, sparatic or too slow/fast? if its a 94-97; it gets its speed reading from the VSS in the tranny (2wd)/transfer case (4wd) in which changing the VSS gear teeth can correct. if its a 98-01/02; it gets its speed reading from the sensor in the pumpkin of the rear diff for which I believe you would need to get a tuner to reprogram for gearing and tire size so the computer can display the correct speed.

@rusco321 . .. most transmissions have a limp mode where it relies on other sensors to estimate load and wat speed it might be on also a pre-programed shift map. The speed sensor will just aid in the shifting sooner for better fuel economy. (Other sensor can be a transmission speed sensor) .. just my 2 cents

Another common cause of "jumping needle" is unshielded VSS wiring. Engine-swapped cars get that, especially at a standstill. The fix is to run a shielded wire and ground the shielding to the chassis.

Eric. just replaced the speed sensor. now I am currently about to drill out the mounting bolt. heres the story. first initial startup after replacement. speedometer bouncing all over and transmission sloppy. second startup. everything great. every startup after. mostly indecisive, mostly not working. so the next day I figure, magnet not reading, bolt needs tightening. old bolt rusty bottom. this bolt runs through the cast and the Bottom touches air, right... explains the rusty end of the bolt anyway. anyway first time I tighten, nothing ... try it again, snap. so more invasive procedures and a new bolt needed. question is, could this just very well be a cheap aftermarket part? after all it was reading a few times. and obviously bolted all the way down until I snapped it, which I feared would happened, but did it anyway. and that geared end of the sensor? aside from a magnet, if this sensor works on magnet principle... is that geared end something that happens to go in easy or does it become problematic during installing? I'm picturing mashing gears to whatever its working with and not seating properly, thereby not getting readings because its in fact not "in". but then again the car did operate correctly at times. all this within a day and half. any reply appreciated thanks

Great video. My brother in law has a 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 and wants to install taller tires on the rear to improve gas mileage. He was told by the tire shop that he would not have to calibrate his speedometer because his computer could detect the difference through the wheel speed sensor and automatically compensate for the change in height. Is that true or BS ? Thanks for all the great videos.

Nice video Eric. I have an exact same issue with the speedo flickering back and forth even at idle sometimes. However......every time I step on the brake, the speedo comes back to normal but it doesn't sound like the engine auto shift correctly. Rpm looks high almost 4k at 80mph. Do you think it's the speedo sensor? If that's the case, that should be an easy fix based on your video. I have not done any diagnosis yet, pulling the speedo connector off and drive, etc. Thanks.

I would have liked to hear some information on how the speed sensor could be bench tested. Is it possible to bench test the sensor? I also really love your videos, so keep them coming. I do calibration for a living, so of course I am the only dork that will ask this question.

Well...it is working fine now. So it was raining that day and a friend mentioned the sensor must be wet. But if that's the case, why would stepping on the brake while driving works? Should I check the connectivity or water may seep through the connector into the sensor? Or should I just replace it?

The only trouble I seem to have with aftermarket parts on my 1993 BMW 525iA is that they don't last as long. Generally, you have to replace water pumps every five years with good OEM ones. My aftermarket one only lasted about 3 years.

Why didn't you put some silicone grease on the connector to make sure water doesn't get back in?

yeah, a T5 or a T3 bulb, common on some cars since D4 is most commonly used gear.

mitsubishi eclipse 3.0L has a plastic gear on the speed sensor. was driving at about 70mph and watched the speedo go to zero. when replacing the sensor i noticed it was plastic and it had jammed somehow and ground all the gears off of the sensor

I noticed my car threw a code for the VSS and I came to find out that the left lower engine mount was bad and as soon as I replaced it I have never got a engine light. Just wanted to post that for other options.

Friend of mine has a 1992 Honda Civic where the speedometer bounces back and forth between 20mph and 50mph. Ive heard of issues with the cluster on this year model but ive noticed if when sitting still, I move forward like half an inch it will shoot to 50mph, another half an inch it will go back down to 20mph and so on and so forth repeating that flip flopping back and forth

What does the o2 sensor fault mean? I know it says malfunction but the car seems to drive fine so i can't see what the sensor has failed at? I honestly don't mean to sound stupid, i would just really like to know

While in use, it goes full round by itself and gets stuck at 0. It doesn't go forward. Is the problem vvs or the indicator?
