Jody Scheckter won the F1 World Championship in 1979. After his F1 career he ran a business in America before setting up Laverstoke Park Farm - his own organic/biodynamic farm in Hampshire, UK. His sole aim is to produce the best-tasting, healthiest food without compromise for himself and his family. Happily he now makes the same food available to the public! Rosanna and Pole Position went to meet him to see his farm and his incredible private collection of F1 cars.

The Magic Merlyn was here in the States back in 1991. As I understand it, it was restored by former Formula Ford National Champion, David Loring for then owner and Racer Magazine publisher, Paul Pfanner. Loring raced the car in the US Formula Ford 25th Anniversary at Lime Rock. I’m only slightly surprised to find it in the Scheckter collection today.

Absolutely talented driver but he did NOT love racing. He was the best, he knew it and did excellent job but he was totally desireless. He did it for money. When he got his goal, the title, he retired soon after and started to do what he loves -- farming.

Actually, Jody moved to the US and founded FATS - Firearms Training Systems, which was an outstanding combat simulator. An avid pistol competitor at the time, I shot several sessions on their live fire sim when it came out in the 90's. An avid F1 fan as well, I was even more surprised to learn who the founder was. I saw Schecter at my first in person F1 race - the 1976 Long Beach Grand Prix. He had the Tyrrell up to third behind the Ferraris of Reggazoni and Lauda but something broke and he didn't finish. (I was a Lauda fan, but that weekend Reggazoni took pole, scored fastest lap and led from start to finish!) Anyway, FATS simulators were adopted worldwide. When the firm was acquired about 15 years ago, that's when Jody had the money to start the farm. I was always impressed by Schecter and Lauda's similarities. Both highly intelligent and deeply thoughtful. They trusted each other on the track. Both took World Championships at Ferrari while the notoriously difficult Enzo was still alive. (He really was the boss from hell...) Both abruptly walked away from Ferrari. Both went on to become even more successful in their own businesses after winning their drivng championships.
