I got weak staining on p16, what does that mean

Had a leep 3 months ago . Clean margins. Had another leep again to increase the margins. Ecc sample pathology showed " minutes clusters of cells p16 positive but are cauterized and cannot be further categorized ". Can previous leep / inflammation cause some cells to be p16 positive?

p16 can be positive in groups of endocervical cells that show tubal/ciliated metaplasia without being due to HPV-related dysplastic changes. Whether this was the case for you cannot be determined using stains or morphology. A follow-up HPV test might be helpful however, as a negative result would be reassuring and a positive result would indicate the need for further close follow-up.

It will have a splotchy pattern, akin to endometrioid cancer in the uterus. There may be small areas of almost all positive staining, but it will not be diffusely positive like serous carcinoma.

P16 is most often a surrogate marker for a high risk strain of Human Papilloma virus, a virus that can cause cancer and pre-cancers. So a negative reaction means the staining was not characteristic of those cellular changes. There are a few other settings where p16 can be positive unrelated to HPV
