A truly exciting video here Matt, one thing that may help in the future, it a standard airline SOP that when windshear/bad weather is reported like those CB cells, no thrust derate is used to ensure the plane can accelerate enough. Meteorologically the centre has huge atmospheric suction and the plane will become attracted to the centre of the cell, this is why full thrust is used when taking off and climbing out into weather like that. Hope that helps!
@superpachin5 жыл бұрын
m8 change the bloody power setting, you are on ryanair mode, that is why it won't accelerate

Great video Matt as always...It reminded me of a real flight Singapore to LHR in a 747 in similar weather. stayed on the taxiway for 1hr 31 mins before allowed a take-off. When we hit the edge of passing storm we bouncing about with lightning strikes, terrible screaming, turbulence, etc.. Praise to the Pilots that evening. interesting to of heard the pilots chat that night cutting through it. Strangely, after passing above, it was smooth as silk. Your video gave me the answers to what it must have been like. Brilliant !! and the crazy duo comments makes it great fun. cheers Matt

Matt...what we would have done in real life is either taken a vector left of the cell or waited to take off until the cell was out of the way. If I had gotten a vector off the SID, I would have TOGA'd out, climbed to the accel altitude, then gone HDG mode, VS +500fpm at MCT and cleaned up as quickly as possible to gain speed. The faster you go, even at lower altitudes, the better chance you have of not stalling the airplane. Keeping the flaps out helps with lift, but creates a LOT of drag. Because of your weight, the drag created by the configuration kept you from speeding up. The other thing that was happening to you is that when you flew through the cell, you were getting severe up/downdrafts which was bleeding airspeed while you were trying to climb. 1500fpm was too much for the airplane to handle. If you could have gotten above the MSA and just level and cleaned up at MCT, you would have gotten out quicker and not "hit the bricks". The other thing I noticed, and this might be sim related, is that where the cloud was relative to your view was not where the cell was on the radar. Now while airborne radar is not the greatest (I have vastly better radar products on the ground dispatching, which is why I guide my pilots through heavy weather), it should have been reasonably close to what you saw out the window. It wasn't...unless...Did you have the tilt up on your WX radar? If not, then you might not have seen an anvil which would explain why when you skirted the cell you encountered such severe vertical shear...we NEVER fly under an anvil of a CB, because the vertical shear is more severe than the airplane can handle. The good news is you can reproduce the situation and apply these tactical actions and see if it makes a difference. Let me know if it works for you...just comment here and I'll see it. BTW, PTA is the bomb! Cheers!

Just finished my ATPL met exam, Storm avoidance by Wx radar will be giving yourself 10Nm separation from the storm cell normally in the heading hold mode at this kind of altitude. if you do get into the cell, max power, best climb attitude and power yourself out of the down draft until you break through into better weather! Hope this helps Matt!

Matt, I know this was a bit of fun, but real-world pilots would cope with a storm cell like this quite differently. (The weather you experienced is certainly experienced in real life around the equator) - Clean configuration - Turbulence Penetration speed (~250 knots) - Deviate from the SID to avoid cells - No derate in use

@@mattdavies Do you recommend your sim to be installed on a SSD or can I use a HDD too? I've had it on a SSD but at some point it gets just to expensive when you get more and more add-ons, so I was wondering if the cheaper solution is also fine.. Is it?
@thomasvandewetering27585 жыл бұрын
How I would've solved it, was by increasing the N1 of the engines. They were running at CLB 2, and I think that putting them in CON, CRZ or even GA would've given it a bit more thrust and thus a bit more speed. But I'm not a licensed pilot :)
