I think you are referring to TrackIR, which is what I am using to move the view. It is easy to set up for basic operation but can be adjusted very flexibly to tune it to your preferences. It no doubt has some impact on frame rates but the impact is not significant in my experience.

hello friend, I would like to ask you a question, I have a problem configuring my projectors, I have 3 projectors for my prepard 3.1 but at the moment of corner transition I get a double image or the transit lines are thinner on one screen than on another and I tried to center it and on the track it goes well for me but in other parts everything goes out of kilter, how could the visual be configured so that everything has the same perspective and the same shape and gives me a general image...?
@AlmostAviation
@AlmostAviation 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I can really answer this , there are too many variables. But I'd start by making sure your zoom settings are modest, so the distortion away from the centre of the image is minimised. I think you will always get some slight distortion, so with overlapping images this will lead to a mismatch. You would also need to account for the overlap in calculating your FoV settings for each view, or that will introduce other errors. I guess this is why there are (expensive) image warping and morphing products for using multiple projectors.

I don't know about external views. Although it might be possible to move the viewpoint far off-centre, it would still be a VC view. As I understand it, a VC view doesn't include the external model, it just includes the few bits that you can normally see from the cockpit.

Thanks for the great video. With the tips you gave in your video, I've managed to setup a configuration of my own with a 3 display setup in P3DV4 (v4.4). I do have some issues however due to the fact that I'm using this on a laptop. Basically I have 2 external 22 inch monitors for left and right views and my 15,5 inch laptop display for my forward view. All three displays have a resolution of 1920 x 1080. I would like to have a fourth monitor for my instruments, but I don't think my laptop is powerfull enough to handle a fourth display. Now because I have different size displays, it makes configuring this in view management a bit more complicated. I have had to use the pitch parameter on my laptop display (forward view) to compensate for the different size. I'm basically pitching up a little (about 2°). My question is, do I base my view angle measurements solely on the laptop display as this is the one used for the forward view? How would you configure such a setup with different size displays? Any chance we could discuss this in private mails or chats? Thanks for all the tips and info in your video. Hope to hear from you soon. Kind regards Dave
@AlmostAviation
@AlmostAviation 5 жыл бұрын
You should set up each display according to your measurement of its actual field of view from where you are sitting. This will, of course, be different for the 15.5" laptop and the external 22" displays. I don't think it's any more complicated than that.

@@AlmostAviation Hi. Thanks for the reply. OK. But for the heading field of the left and right views, I would presume that I should use the angle of view figure of the centre screen to swing left/right. Is this correct?
@AlmostAviation
@AlmostAviation 5 жыл бұрын
@@kin_shing_tchang [EDITED!] No, I think you need to make the heading offset for the left screen half of the centre screen FOV plus half of the left screen FOV. Think of it like this. First you imagine swivelling the leftmost view by half the centre screen's FOV. This position marks the leftmost edge of the middle screen, or the rightmost edge of the left screen. To get to the centre of the leftmost screen you need to swivel a further distance equal to half of its FOV. If you imagine for simplicity your middle screen has a FOV of 50 degrees and the outer screens are half the size of the middle one, with a FOV of 25 degrees. So in the view group setup the left screen has these values in the 'SideAngles' table for the ViewFrustum: Left = -12.5, Right = 12.5, and in the OffsetPBH table you have Pitch = 0, Bank = 0, Heading = -37.5. (If that doesn't make sense just stop after the first sentence and try that!)

@@AlmostAviation Ah the 'SideAngles' settings for the left screen makes more sense now! 8-) Done what you suggested and everything works out. Thanks once again! Just one last thing. I notice that the left and right views are bit tilted down in relation to the front view. Hope you understand what I mean. Say you have a fence in the front view that runs horizontally. When you pan around and put the fence in both front view and one of the side views, then the fense line is still flat on the front view but on the side view it is running in a slightly tilted downwards direction. Shouldn't it also be completely flat?

Hi Mark, I know this is an 'old' video but I hope you are still reading the comments :) I have had much help of your videos in setting up my three screen view in p3d v4.5 for the A2A 172 virtual cockpit. However I am now making the transition to using a separate monitor for my instruments, using air manager. My question is, how do you get 'rid' of the large virtual cockpit when using a separate monitor for the instrumentspanel? I don't want the instruments in my main view now but they are there in the virtual cockpit. How did you manage the settings in p3d using for example A2A 172 so you don't see as much of the cockpit in the 'main' window?

Thanks. I was using EZCA with this setup but in my later videos you will see I have abandoned TrackIR and the virtual cockpit so it is no longer necessary. I have had no issues with full-screen mode. BTW, I have read that there is an option in P3Dv4.3 to compensate for geometric distortion, which allow you to run a single super-wide view without the stretching you would normally see. This should give a performance advantage, although it would not be possible to run the setup I show here (or indeed my latest setup) with a single view.

Excellent video which I followed and learnt a lot from - Thank You. Problem came when I set up my three new 27" Samsung G7 Monitors and fourth touch screen. Setting up a view group as your video, despite not including the 4th touch screen it the view group does not respect the monitor ID numbers as identified in Windows or Nvidia control panel, i.e. the are mixed up. Also oddly, forgetting my created view group, if I enable the automatic spread across monitors options, the order is ok, but it drops the resolution on the left and right ones and creates black bars on each side of the view as it the monitor is 4:3 aspect, but leaving the centre one correct on 2560 x 1440? Cant find any similar problems on the Internet, any ideas?

Great video mate! I'm currently building a 737 Simulator at home. I am running 2 x 55 INCH 4k TVs and 1 x 40 INCH TV as the main display (similar to your 3 main displays). I am then also running 3 smaller monitors as 1 monitor with the use of a Triple Head 2 Go DE for my 2D instrument displays (PFD, ND displays etc.). I am able to start the sim and drag the virtual cockpit so it takes up the 3 TV's and I am able to undock and move the 2D displays to the correct position but when I go to full screen mode the monitors all become jumbled and 2 of the smaller instrument display monitors turn off. I suspect it is a graphics card issue. Any assistance regarding my matter would be fantastic mate! If you are dragging the VC onto your main monitors it sounds like you aren't using a View Group. I think your success will depend on lots of different factors: what graphics card(s) you have, how you have the main display configured (Surround or not), whether you can actually get your graphics card to use four outputs simultaneously (I never could) and whether it will allow one of these to be a TH2GO. Along similar lines, I would think there will be a question of whether a View Group will correctly see the TH2GO as one screen. In summary, too many variables for me to have any real idea :|

Hello and thanks for the very informative video. I have a question though : what is the difference between a 3 projector set up using nvidia surround (with warping and blending software) and setting one viewgroup view as 180 degrees wide and 40 degrees deep say, or as is my case, a th2Go ? I don't really ubderstand the difference between 3 separate outputs in viewgroups (say 50 or 60 degrees each as in the tutorial) and one warped and blended output showing 180 degrees wide field of view? Sorry for rambling... Cheers anyway
@AlmostAviation
@AlmostAviation 3 жыл бұрын
The difference is in how the image is projected. Using a standard 'flat' projection algorithm, such as you get with FSX or P3D without View Groups, the image in increasingly stretched outwards as you move away from the centre. Within a certain tolerance this stretching is relatively insignificant, but with a really wide (or really tall) display it becomes very noticeable. If you use the same projection algorithm but create several smaller images, which are adjacent or overlapped, you get a much less-distorted view. The smaller the views, the better they will line up. With a View Group, you can also tell P3D to use a cylindrical or spherical projection algorithm, which I presume adjusts the image to compensate for it being projected onto a curved surface instead of a flat plane. This should make it look more natural if you have your screens wrapped around you (i.e. angled inwards). Perhaps it also suggests that using a View Group with the cylindrical projection and a single 180-degree wide display should look more natural than the one you get with nvidia Surround or TH2GO, but I have not tried this.

Why didn’t you use the roll correction on the side displays to straighten out the runway edges, for example?
@AlmostAviation

Did you notice that the runway edges were bent while the horizon was straight? Roll doesn't fix that.

Good point. How are the runways edges best corrected?
@AlmostAviation
@AlmostAviation 5 жыл бұрын
@@donwhyte9855 If I knew that I would correct them :) I have experimented a bit more recently and I still can't get it any better. I am thinking maybe I need to have the side screens angled inwards a bit more and it will look better. That's not possible to do in my current setup, so I can't really try it.

Many thanks for taking the time and effort for this. The P3D wideview with the distortion in the edges took the shine off it all for me. Did you ever get to the bottom of fixing the initial zoom at 1.0?
@AlmostAviation
@AlmostAviation 5 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what you are referring to without watching the whole video again. That said, there is no reason to presume that a zoom of 1.0 has any special significance. After more experiments I concluded that P3D knows what the zoom factor should be for the angle of view you set up and doesn't allow you to change it. (In fact it will let you zoom in but not out.) To put it another way, if you use view groups it won't allow you to set unrealistically wide zoom factors. Zooming never really made sense to me anyway.

@@AlmostAviation Never made sense to me - I just want a realistic 3 monitor setup without distortion that gave a good field of vision... now I am looking at your Saitek Yoke modifications... as I cannot stump up the £££ for a yoko! Thanks again for taking the time to make this - saved me my sanity!
@AlmostAviation

@@brixo1033 As for the Saitek, have a look at the Honeycomb Alpha yoke, which is currently on pre-order from Aerosoft at 219 Euros (or Honeycomb at $219). This is looking like it will be a Saitek killer, if not quite a Yoko. Perhaps it will even give the Yoko a run for its money. I will probably get one in time to review, although perhaps not the first generation...

Hi there Mark. Thanks for this video - really helpful. I have an 8 monitor sim with 5 of them dedicated to views. These worked perfectly in XP11 to give me a FOV of about 220°. Now I am trying to get started with P3Dv5 and am assuming this method would work in my sim. Is that right?
@AlmostAviation
@AlmostAviation 4 жыл бұрын
I don't have v5 but I assume it will work the same. It's actually quite similar to X-Plane setup, I think.

@@AlmostAviation . Hi Mark. Thanks for your response. I set up the 5 displays according to your tutorial. As you say, the process is similar to XP11 but I found that with P3Dv5 it is a bit more convoluted. Two questions come out of the exercise:- 1. How do I get rid of the default forward view? "View00" seems to remain as an extra image, initially concealed behind my third display, then when I finished the 5 display view group setup this view came to the front, completely ruining the look of the view group. 2. Can I make this work as scenery only, without having to show the virtual cockpit?
@AlmostAviation
@AlmostAviation 4 жыл бұрын
@@davidwilkinson4969 Sorry, I don't know about the "View00" thing, although perhaps you can just close the window? As for your second question, I have found that with the viewgroup active, all the usual view changes work - so you can change the view to 'cockpit' instead of 'virtual cockpit' for an outside-only view (which is what I generally use). Maybe that helps.

@@AlmostAviation Thanks for such a swift reply. I'll experiment with those ideas. Cheers. BTW - I enjoyed the humour of your introduction to the "Viewgroups Madness" video.
