This song is about the famous love story of Sohni and Mahiwal, a folklore that's been told for centuries in both Sindh and Punjab regions. The Sindhi version is older, from around the 10th century, while the Punjabi one came later, in the 18th century. Both versions are pretty much the same, except for the few differences, most importantly the ending. In the Sindhi version, Sohni dies while trying to cross a river, and Mahiwal builds a tomb for her (which is still in Shadadpur City, District Sanghar, Sindh). But in the Punjabi version, when Mahiwal sees Sohni drowning, he tries to save her but can't swim, so they both drown and are reunite in death. This song is based on the Punjabi version. The story unfolds in Gujarat, a city on the bank of river Chenab in Punjab. Sohni, the daughter of Tulla, a potter from the Kumhar caste traditionally associated with ceramics, assists her father in his shop. During that time, Gujarat served as a crucial waypoint on the trade route between Bukhara (Uzbekistan) and Delhi. One day, a wealthy Bukhara merchant, Izzat Baig, stops in Gujarat while returning from Delhi. He visits Tulla's shop, and is instantly captivated by Sohni's beauty. Sohni also falls for him. Abandoning his journey, Izzat Baig assumes the role of a servant in Tulla's household, tending to their buffaloes just to be near Sohni. In Punjabi, "buffalo" translates to "mahi," earning him the name "Mahiwal" (buffalo herder). Soon their love comes in her parents' notice. Since marrying an outsider is forbidden in their community, they hastily arrange her marriage to a fellow potter. Devastated, Izzat Baig renounces worldly life and becomes a Faqir. He settles in a hut across the Chenab from Sohni's new home. Unable to swim, Izzat relies on Sohni, who, to meet him every night, would swim across using a hard-baked pitcher as a float (since its hollow from inside and filled with air, it doesn't drown and was utilized by non-swimmers in that era, as one seen at the 0:50 mark in the video). However, rumors of their romance begin to circulate. One day, Sohni's sister-in-law follows her, discovering her pitcher's hiding spot. She informs Sohni's mother-in-law, and with Sohni's husband away on business, the women take matters into their own hands. The following day, the sister-in-law substitutes the hard-baked pitcher with an unbaked one. That night, eager to meet her beloved, Sohni grabs it, thinking it was the same pot she'd used every night and attempts to cross the river, but it disintegrates in the water, and she is engulfed by the currents. From the opposite bank, Mahiwal witnesses her plight and, in a desperate bid to save her, leaps into the river, tragically drowning alongside his beloved. The ending of the song is the spiritual interpretation of the story. Sohni symbolizes humanity, Mahiwal represents the Divine, the turbulent river embodies life, and the pitcher signifies our spiritual guide (be it a prophet or teacher). The message is to place our trust in authentic spiritual guide, since only he can help us navigate through life's turbulent journey toward ultimate union with the Creator. While those who rely on "unsound" guides are cautioned that such misplaced faith may lead to a tragic end.
