Somewhere from the late 20th century, it is FILM MUSIC which has helped Carnatic reach a WIDER audience. Maestro ILAYARAJA has used rarest ragas in his songs and background scores like Raga Paavani in Guna "Paartha vizhi", Raga Srothaswini in the mother-daughter theme of Karpoora Mullai movie etc. when even the Carnatic musicians rarely or NEVER use it on stage. Raga Reethigowlai was MADE famous with Chinna kannan azhaikkiraan song. SO MANY EXAMPLES. NOBODY knows Carnatic music/ragas beyond Carnatic musicians or people learning it.

NO true Carnatic musician with a conscience and work-ethics will oppose this verdict. Film Composers like CRS, GR, MSV, SMS, KVM, ILAYARAJA etc. have done so much to (without expecting any return) preserve the values of Classical music and to make it accessible even to the nooks and corners of remote villages, which Carnatic musicians have failed to do. Today, Carnatic musicians like Sikkil Gurucharan openly say that composers like Ilayaraja's music have helped them EXPLORE Carnatic music like they have never heard before.
