Right now, P4/P5 & G5 are just recognizable labels of who's-better -- nothing official. To get in the playoffs, right now it's the Top 5 Conf Champs -- regardless of what that conference is, unlike the former NY Bowl setups where it'd be the P5 Champs no matter how good or bad + the best G5 champ. Meaning, there is no official label to any conferences anymore. That said, I think the playoffs should make it so the Top 6 Conf Champs should get in -- assuming the P12 gets 4 more, which would be of the upper G5s. Why? Well, right now there's only 9 real conferences -- which is why it was reduced to Top 5. Which is over 1/2 of the conferences who'd get an auto-bid. Bring the P12 back -- the # of auto-bids would lower to just 1/2 the # of conferences. Does it really matter that the new P12 wouldn't be as good as the former P12? Not really. I think the only argument that could be made is if Wash-St & Oregon-St joined other P4 conferences, and another conference from scratch came in to form it.
