I grew up on a commercial hog farm and that was the sweetest quietest feeding ever! Hog are deafening and cut throat to each other. I mean really... several thousand of them in a metal building are louder than a rock concert.

Quite fascinating. I had a sudden interest recently when I discovered a house I pass once or twice a week had alpacas in their yard. I was immediately hooked. When I was headed that way I would stop in the best place to view them untill another car came behind me.i think they're so cool.

Hi I just found your channel and I subscribed...! You are putting out a lot of great information and I’m very impressed with how fast you answer questions along with how you take the time to answer everyone’s questions and everything they ask of you...! So many content producers act like they don’t have any time for their subscribers and their questions... Have a great day and be blessed.

Thank you! Love my 3 baby females alpacas (6mnth old), love their hums. I currently feed mine all together, just muesli morning and night. One of mine loves pets, another loves playing with leaves in her mouth. And another one often when we approach kinda crawl walks with her tail up - trying to figure why she does this all the time

@ButterfieldAlpacaRanch
@ButterfieldAlpacaRanch 6 жыл бұрын
Be cautious about putting alpacas in with horses. A horse's kick will kill or maim an alpaca. You must know your horses' temperaments to decide if it will work. Since you will have multiple species living on your property, be very diligent about parasite control. Test fecals regularly and treat only for the parasites present. We do not routinely deworm alpacas but treat as needed for the specific problem. Monthy fecal testing is advisable. The cost is nominal.

They look so cuddly but they actually aren't. The more they get to know you, the more comfortable they are with you but they are naturally pretty skiddish. Some are nicer than others. A number of mine like to give kisses (nose to nose with you). It is really in how each one was raised and their personality.

Available alpaca feeds are often regional. Ask a Floridian alpaca owner. Find one at alpacainfo.com or openherd.com

Hello. I'm really looking into getting an Alpaca so I have a few questions. One, are the cats your barn gaurdains and can cats be used as barn guardians? Two, should you have more than one alpaca so they don't get lonely or can you just give them a lot of attention? Three what sex alpaca would you recommend me getting. Four, how much do you feed an alpaca? I know that I would have to feed them twice a day. Five, what form of spinning the fine would you recemond. Six, how do I know that my grass is good for the alpaca? Also I live in Florida so how should I build the stable/shelter? How often would you recemond sheeting them and clipping their nails? I will probably have more questions later. Thanks.

Hello! I'm just getting around to responding to comments. Sorry it's taken a while to reply. The cats are there to keep the mice population under control since there are hay and alfalfa stacked around. Not really anything directly related to the alpacas. Alpacas are strongly herd oriented. Having a minimum of 3 is suggested. That way, if something were to happen to one, you still have two. They should all be the same gender. Males and females are not housed together. Not even geldings with the females. Alpacas mainly eat grass and hay. You can give them a supplement feed but, if you are feeding quality grass and hay, you only need to supplement pregnant females and the young until about age 2. Minerals should be provided at all times to all alpacas. There is alpaca specific feed and mineral you can find online. Spinning the fiber depends on the breed (huacaya or suri) and the staple length. I'm not very experienced in hand spinning to really advise. I recommend C. Norman Evan's Alpaca Field Manual, 3rd edition (much updated from the 2nd edition) as a general resource. It's very much worth the investment. Among other topics, he covers parasites and nutrition (grasses and supplementation). Find other alpaca owners in your area. With Florida's climate, there are adaptations you need to make that don't affect me in Nebraska. They can advise on shelter and the best time of year to shear. Start with alpacainfo.com or openherd.com to find alpaca farms near you. You should also purchase alpacas from Florida who were born there and used to Florida weather. Shearing happens once a year in the spring. Toes and teeth are trimmed as needed. Each alpaca will grow those out at different rates.

Why are the older boys separated from the younger ones? Or what determines separating them? Thanks
@ButterfieldAlpacaRanch
@ButterfieldAlpacaRanch 5 жыл бұрын
The young boys group has an age range from those who are recently weaned from mom (6-9 months) up to newly matured (average 2 years). Until a male has sexually matured, he does not have the size or hormonal motivation to fight back with the grown boys. I keep them in this group until they can handle themselves in rough play and fighting with the "big" boys.
@CH-mu6kf
@CH-mu6kf 2 жыл бұрын
So do you have to separate the young boys from the older ones and why..
@ButterfieldAlpacaRanch
@ButterfieldAlpacaRanch 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. Boys who are weaned but not sexually matured yet (about 3 years old) go in their own pasture. They cannot handle the rough play and fighting of the grown males. They are likely to get injured. Certainly, assaulted and unable to fight back.

No, you cannot have only one alpaca. They are strongly herd oriented. At a minimum, you can have 2 but 3 is better. They do better in larger groups.

Can you milk an Alpaca or Llama for human consumption?
@ButterfieldAlpacaRanch
@ButterfieldAlpacaRanch 4 жыл бұрын
I've not heard whether it is or isn't for human consumption, but it is not commonplace in the U.S. because moms don't tend to produce enough milk for both the cria and us.

Alpacas live an average of 20 years so, if you get an adult, you'll still have them for a while. I recommend at least 2 years of age if you are just starting out.

Trust can be earned at any age. You want a well adjusted and socialized alpaca so be wise about where you get your alpacas from. They are also happiest in herds of at least 3 alpacas. You can’t have just one. I have found that they are happier living in bigger groups.

Alpacas are a herd animal , very social at least 3 together, the more the merrier . To strong of a bond between human and Alpaca , the Alpaca will try to dominate the relationship and possibly become aggressive . Alpaca House Wheaton .
