OMG that Bb at the end was ridiculous! And of course the rest of the aria was sung with the most gorgeous legato lines, which makes this rendition a real knockout. Sondra just keeps getting better and better. For me, she is the best soprano singing today.

@@lucasdebevec8581 , when I say it's "ridiculous", I mean it in a good way, that it's impressive....."too good" is another way of understanding it. I suppose that expression doesn't translate well to Spanish.
@lucasdebevec85813 жыл бұрын
Ohhhhh, yesss! Sorry. Gracias. Entiendo. Gracias por la pronta respuesta. Es verdad, no existe esa acepción en español. Por un instante, por leer demasiado rápido tu expresión no tuve en cuenta esa otra acepción del inglés. Muchas gracias por la gentileza de tu respuesta. 🤗 Abrazo.

No doubt. Nobody else can come close to her these days. Too bad Mr Gelb (from the Met) has such a bad hearing deficit.

yes. OMG. ridiculously incredibly good. She held it for 12 seconds. I love her voice and artistry a lot. This performance is even better than the one she did on 2015. This one is the best one I've ever heard of.
@kaochloe12 жыл бұрын
@Walter Monteagudo that is in your opinion. How about Caballe held her last high note for 13 seconds? kzbin.info/www/bejne/hXqsdaGlrbalbZY&ab_channel=No%C3%A9Hern%C3%A1ndezRodr%C3%ADguez Does that make her a terrible musician? I always think music appreciation is very personal. No one has the same taste and you should listen to the music that you enjoy. Always easy to criticize

I posted this in a thread, but I'll post it here too: the tempo is actually not that slow. The issue is that her entrances tend to be behind the beat here, and sometimes the rubati is too much. She's in great voice though.
@tristanhnl3 жыл бұрын
I don't understand all these comments about the tempo being too slow...you folks realise this is a RECITAL, right? It's not sung in the context of the drama of the opera itself, and it's not intended to be. Clearly Sondra is intending to showcase her talent and vocal skill, more than anything else. And seeing that she gives till it hurts when she *IS* performing in an actual, full opera, I think a few liberties during a recital can be forgiven. Sometimes I think people are quite ungrateful and picky, complaining about every little thing.....like, really? Enjoy life, will ya?
@nelsonharpernolanlong74063 жыл бұрын
I totally understand what you're saying. But there has been a real trend towards what the pianist Earl Wild used to refer to as "falling in love with your own tone and forgetting the whole sentence and line." For example, how often do you hear someone do the Four Last Songs at the tempi Strauss actually indicated, which makes the long melismas actually possible in one breath?
@tristanhnl3 жыл бұрын
@@nelsonharpernolanlong7406 , yes and that's what I mean about taking liberties during a recital. In a recital, it's all about the performer and that electric connection with the audience. Give the audience what they want by showcasing your strengths, what you're known particularly for. In Sondra's case, it's silky-smooth legato lines. If Sondra can sing the 4 last songs the way you talked about, then all the power to her. Most mortals can't however....

I agree, when it’s just the voice accompanied with a piano you have a different challenge of filling the room without the assistance of a huge orchestra, and the piano part alone isn’t especially interesting. If she did try to sing it the way it were conducted in an opera the performance would be very hokey.

It's less that her tempo is slow as it is that she lags behind the beat in a lot of her entrances here. The tempo is actually not that slow.

Glorious singing but the ridiculously slow tempo totally robs the aria of any sense of drama..the text talks of approaching danger in the final bars,Leonora would want to get the heck out of there,not hang around on an interminable Top Bflat😊
@lyazidhamroune79902 жыл бұрын
Slow but not boring. The first part of the aria is a sort of prayer. Huge voice, no squillo unfortunately. The sound is not focused enough but this is my personal conception of operatic sound esthetics. Listen to Cerquetti...Furthermore, the vowels are never really clear, the text is somewhat blurred. Coherent interpretation nonetheless.
@ER1CwC5 ай бұрын
It's the opposite actually. Her voice is not that heavy, but there is a lot of squillo and point. I agree about her diction.

@@Classicvideofan she's not that good. Power doesn't mean anything if you cant sing with some emotion. Radvanovsky's vibrato is intrusive it ruins whatever she's singing.
@tristanhnl2 жыл бұрын
@@crazyorganist1609 , you can say the same for Franco Corelli and Ezio Pinza too then. Sondra has some good company if being "not that good" is qualified by an "intrusive" vibrato. Fact is, Sondra's technique is sensational, better than 80% of other opera singers, including those from the "golden era" of singing. Being able to do messa di voce the way only she can, is proof of a formidable technique that most others can't even come close to.
