This is such a good explanation of pace feeding. My lactation specialist tried explaining it to us and it was just confusing. This makes it much more clear. Thank you!

I'm so glad it helped you! It's so important in helping babies to move from breast to bottle and back to breast again!
@22Nimily5 жыл бұрын
@@melaniepatrick5053 I agree! My baby is only 2 weeks old but I'm not making enough milk for her yet. I'm supplementing her with pumped milk, formula, and an SNS system. I'm exhausted and figuring out how to bottle feed her once in a while (or having hubby do it while I rest) is very helpful. I wish I didn't need the extra help, but hopefully it's only temporary. I think the key to going back and forth is this paced feeding. It's going to be a life saver.

This is the best video on pacing I have seen so far! The only adjustment I might make is to let baby suck suck suck wait X3 BEFORE tilting the bottle up to give milk, like babies must do at the breast ("asking" for milk release). Well done, and thank you! RT IBCLC

Doesn’t baby get gassy/colic when sucking on the nipple while there is no milk in it.? Isn’t baby sucking in air?

is it ok for the legs to be crouched up to the tummy like that while feeding. doesn't it cause them to feel uneasy and vomit?
@durhamlactation5478 жыл бұрын
This baby is very young and likes to keep his legs up. It is good ergonomics for newborns to have their bottoms below their knees.

Good point. I'd imagine so, but in this case, his legs are really not crouched up against his stomach so tight as to cause pressure.

@durhamlactation5478 жыл бұрын
It is actually very difficult to swallow air. If you try to dry swallow you will likely swallow saliva because a bolus of food at the top of the throat is what triggers a swallow. Most rhetoric around air in bottle is mostly just to sell fancy bottles. Sucking on the end of a bottle during breaks is similar to using a pacifier. You will notice that they will suck, but not swallow unless there is milk in the tip of the nipple.
@LockeLaboratory6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the great video! How do you feed the last portion of milk in the bottle? Do you tip the bottle up at that point?
@emeralddoulas6 жыл бұрын
Yep, since it's just a little bit at that point, you can tip the bottle up to allow the nipple to fill.

How do you feed the last bit of milk when horizontally, none goes to the tip anymore. Should I tilt it more vertically?

I'm not really sure which nipple to use when pace feeding. When we use Dr. Brown's level 1 slow flow, the milk dribbles down her chin a lot, but she is done in 15-20 minutes. When we use Dr. Brown's level P nipple, there is little to no milk dribble, but it takes 30+ minutes to get through a feed. She does stop on her own and not swallow quite a bit with the latter nipple. Maybe if we use that nipple, we don't need to angle the bottle down for breaks?
@emeralddoulasLLC Жыл бұрын
Hi! It does sound like the preemie nipple is working better in terms of keeping milk waste so you could try without a break and see how she does!

Cute baby! I think the sitting-up position is recommended only for paced bottle feeding. Otherwise, babies this young should not be made to sit up--with support, of course. Their spine is not ready for this position.
@LourdesSantaballa7 жыл бұрын
Actually, if the adult is supporting the spine this has no basis. You should not sit a baby unsupported in a chair. But of course any baby can sit in your lap.

We are going to try this with our 2 week old. She has been taking 2-3 oz of a bottle every 3 hours and almost never spits up. That being said, we feel that we are undermining her ability to work hard at the breast. With this method, I expect her to tire out and not take 2-3 oz each feeding. I also expect that means we will have to feed her closer to a 2 hour cycle. Do you think that is likely? Or am I missing something?
@melaniepatrick50534 жыл бұрын
You may or may not have to feed her more frequently. Unless your pediatrician or lactation consultant says it's important to wake your baby at specific times for feeds (like if there's a concern about weight gain), you can typically follow her lead.

That baby has hiccups for a reason.. He's feeding on too much air!!! I've had 3 babies and know this isn't healthy
@melaniepatrick50535 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your thoughts Pammie. Hiccups are not a problem unless they last an extended period of time, & are normally occur from time to time in most humans & other mammals (even in utero)! Also, the hiccups you witness in this video began before the feeding, so aren't a result of paced bottle feeding or getting too much air. Thanks again!
@DesertEagle905 жыл бұрын
Actually hiccups are good for the baby Incase you can’t burp him in time. And it’s ok if you let it coast through because it helps get rid of air in it’s tummy... Any reason my one year-old son ever had hiccups is because he lays down and probably sucked in air. Hiccups don’t bother the baby
@Divaknit2 жыл бұрын

I don’t like this new pace feeding. I held my babies in my arms close to my chest so they could see my face. This baby can’t see you and connect with you when your feeding. I would incorporate some but not all. That baby needs to see your face when eating.
@LourdesSantaballa7 жыл бұрын
You can still sit baby up and have them look at you. The importance is the sitting position and the horizontal bottle.
