looks like the pot is too big for the plant, does that make the soil too wet? how is the plant doing now?

The plant is not too big for the pot at all. It is thriving in the new pot. The terra cotta pot dries out much too quickly for these plants so it needed a different pot. The new pot is actually not that much bigger than the old and retains moisture much better, which these plants need.

What kind of soil did you use?

I honestly don't remember what I used in this case. Any good all-purpose potting mix will work. I tend to add some perlite too to most of my potting mixes for extra aeration and to help drainage.
