My grandma passed away recently and since I have a few plants of my own, I was given all of her plants. Including one of these which my whole life I had thought it was fake. Almost all the leaves were dead and hadn't been watered in a few months, it was in really rough shape (still is but making progress) thank you for this video. I don't think my grandma ever changed it's pot and it's pretty crammed in there. I'm scared to even look at the roots but will be doing so once I get some pumice this week. Once again thank you!

We got our grandma’s tree as well, it’s about 1,5m in height and it has been around as long as I can remember. It’s definitely 30 years old, if not already 50 years of age. It was never repotted either, and my mother repotted it in a similar sized pot, but with barely any room for the soil. So looking into a larger pot, with different soil for this beautiful plant. Learning as we get along, thanking KZbin for the information shared by plant ‘experts’, seeing different tricks of plant handling is something you cannot learn from any plant book I’ve been reading.

I just got one home that is really large - 22 inch Caudex. It was in a pot outside and the pot broke up.. so I am trying to figure out what pot I can find for it that I can afford. But I was told I can trim some of the roots. So scared lol. I also am scared to do what you are doing to the roots. Maybe if I try that I can get it to fit better in the pot I have. If your plant is getting plenty of sun, you should be ok, but you'll know for next time :-) Keep an eye on the soil. If it's taking a really long time to dry out, you may consider changing the mix.

I have inherited s ponytail plant when my brother passed away. I live in Arizona and the plant has never been inside or repotted. It's about 4 1/2 ft tall and trunk approx 2ft in diameter. It's way overdue to be repotted...I'm positive it will grow like crazy and the branch's be more lush. It gets bright dabbled sun & shade in the afternoon. I've had it for 6 years. Summers here are quite brutal but it seems to absolutely love where I have it! Thank you so much for the repotting tips!!!

I live in Az too. Over the years I have had few ponytail palms that I have transplanted multiple times. When I moved, they were too big to bring with me. One I had eventually put in the ground. I left them behind knowing they were super happy in that spot. They don’t seem to mind the dry, extreme heat as long as they are in the shade with lots of indirect light. Super fun plants.

Great straight and to the point video. Lately I’ve been paying more attention to potting mixes and amendments. I have a ponytail palm a little smaller than this. I’ve had it for a couple of months, and I doubt it’s time to pot UP. I’ll find out when I REpot it, focusing on the soil composition. I’m pretty sure I used this mix for my whale fins as well. All but one of my sansevierias are in terracotta pots. My smaller ponytail is in terracotta. This, however, one will go into another nursery pot that has better drainage and is a color (black) that doesn’t stand out in the cover pot.

Thanks for the video! In another repotting succulent video, I learned that you should not water the plant before you repot it or a few days after, because you just broke the roots, and exposing them directly to water might cause them to immediately rot. Have you heard of this? Is it relevant to ponytail palms?
@OhioTropics
@OhioTropics 3 жыл бұрын
There may be some truth to this, but I've never personally had a problem. I find that it is much easier to repot any plant when the potting mix is at least not bone dry.

I have a chance to purchase a ponytail at an estate sale, reasonable price not great considering the condition this one is in. I am confident I can turn it around (green fingers- not bragging). Succulents however scare me (ravaged a jade plant ((overrwatering))). I live on Florida's west coast so watering can be touchy. I just talk to them and they let me know if they are thirsty. I have citrus, ferns, desert rose, pancake cactus, dracena marginata, pencil cactus, boxwood all in pots doing well. What do you think about me taking on this puny pony tail?

So glad I watched your video first ....I Just acquired a rather handsome Ponytail, single trunk standing 4' tall in a 12"x 10.5" pot...really root bound with roots coming out over the top of the pot....I went and bought a beautiful and heavy, 20" diameter, 19" tall terra cotta pot, which was apparent overkill I see now. Was going to put in a couple of inches of marble gravel, and just use black soil from Home Depot. Now I will go to the the plant supply place and get some succulent soil and the other stuff that prevents compaction. Another new pot that I already had, measures 15 x 15, and is a very sturdy ornate plastic...should be ok methinks....They call Ponytails, Elephant Foot here in Mexico.

Ah ok, in that case, you should be in pretty good shape with what you described. For the nights that get down to freezing, you could also maybe put the plant in a garage or a sheltered spot for the night if you can. It should be able to tolerate a couple weeks of those colder temps. How cold can it get at night where you are?

Do you ever plan on separating some or all the different plants? We have one that is about 7 feet tall and moves between the house and porch season to season here in the Pacific Northwest, USA. It has a calf and I am thinking of rooting it and then gifting it. Ours is over 35 years old and started out about 6 inches tall as a gift from wife's father; lived at wifes work until it got too big for her office. Since it is a succulent, it gets minimal water as dones our big jade plant.
@OhioTropics
@OhioTropics 9 ай бұрын
Wow, it sounds like a nice specimen! I don't plant on separating mine because I don't need more plants :-D Plus mine have been growing all together for years so it might be difficult to separate. If your plant's pup is pretty small, you can definitely easily tease it out. If you can get some roots, that's great. Otherwise, if you have to cut it off, let it air dry for a couple days, and then I'd recommend dipping it in rooting hormone (it's not necessary but it helps) and potting it up. Hope this helps a bit!

Hi just saw this video and thank you for all the details..! I’m curcurrently thinking of repotting a ponytail, but the plant is already quite big; it has been in the same pot for 3years, and from the top it seems to be very root bounded l; but its difficult for me to have even bigger pot, do you think its ok to not making the pot bigger? will the plant suffer lot? is there any alternatives? thank you!
@OhioTropics
@OhioTropics 11 ай бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the video! It's possible to keep it in the same pot, but over time, it will restrict the growth. If you're ok with that, then it's fine! I have the same issue where you reach a point where it is not feasible to keep increasing the pot size. If the surface of the soil becomes a hard mat of roots, you can topdress with a little fresh soil on top.

Hi, my plant seems under stress because the “skin “ on its trunk looks “wrinkled” and it’s lost a lot of leaves and the remaining ones are brown / yellow tipped. I learned from a different video that the symptoms meant it might be having a root rot problem so it’s better to repot right away. However its winter, mostly in the 40’s during the days (7b transitional zone), should I report or should I wait? My plant is always indoor with house temperature around 65. Thank you.

Hi there, can you tell me how you water your plant? This can be caused by both extremes (too dry or too wet). You'd have to tell me what may have occurred. Have you let the potting mix stay dry for a long time? How do you water? Or has your plant's potting mix stayed too wet for a long time?
@UTuberTF
@UTuberTF 3 жыл бұрын
@@OhioTropics hi, thanks for replying. I watered the plant infrequently, because I had done some homework before purchasing the plant so I knew it preferred dry soil. I’m in zone 7b, the plant is by a west facing picture window so it does get plenty of sun even in the middle of winter. When I water I do it little by little and stop when I observe water dripping through the pot. About 8 months ago when the plant remaining leaves thinning and browning too much, I placed two tiny plant food sticks in it hoping to revive it. No luck. Now the trunk is still wrinkled and it’s condition has not improved much. I trim away the brown tips every now and then to keep it looking it’s best.

Sorry for the delay in my response! It's always a good idea to add these materials, but if your soil is drying out in a reasonable amount of time (let's say about a week or so), then leave it alone. This is especially the case if your plant is getting enough light. People run into issues when growing plants in dark locations.

I just redid my meter tall pony tail yesterday for the first time in 5 years. I used a commercial 'succulent and cactus' mix that already had plenty of pumice. I moved it from a 200mm pot to a 300mm pot. The root ball was even tighter than the one shown here. I did drastic surgery on the root ball - I took out all the old soil and trimmed the roots from more than a half meter back to about 20 to 30 cm. The vigor of the plant is visibly better after just one day. Now I gotta go do 'junior' - he's only 700mm tall and won't get that big a pot.

You can certainly try, as long as you live in a climate that these can grow outside year round. It will restrict the roots and it won't grow as big overtime if you leave it in the pot, but you can certainly try and then plant it in the ground later if you ever change your mind.

You can probably keep it in that same size pot for a long time. It just depends on how big you'd like it to get, or if you want to restrict its size by keeping it in the same size. At some point, you have stop otherwise it will get really hard to keep going up in pot size :-) You can always check the drainage hole and see if there are roots visible. If they are, you can repot again if you'd like...

If worse comes to worse, you can just break the pot if needed. What is your pot made of? And at some point, there is nothing wrong with just leaving the plant in the current pot. You can only go up in size so many times! :-) Another thing you can do is root prune a bit and then put it back in the same size pot. This way, you can add some fresh soil to the pot and place it back in.

Since I brought it home I did lift it from the pot to see how root bound it was and I had to add a little soil to it which i kept in the same pot and I also watered it right after. The lower leaves on the stem are browning up and falling the new leaves on top are looking great but the stem is starting to look more bare, is that normal? I dont water it till its bone dry and than I still wait another week before I do it's on my deck with full sunlight, any idea why its losing leaves rapidly?
@OhioTropics
@OhioTropics 4 жыл бұрын
Although it's good to let the soil dry out completely for these plants, you don't want it to remain completely dry for so long, especially if it's in full sunlight. The bottom leaves that are drying up are due to the soil being too dry for too long. I would give your plant a good thorough watering as soon as the soil seems to be mostly dry. Hope this helps!

Hi there! If the water doesn't soak back up rather quickly (within the same day), then I'll empty it. The saucer that I have below my pot isn't that deep so for me it's not an issue. If you have a deep saucer and a lot of water accumulates, I would dump the excess water.

You can trim them a little bit if you'd like and then place it back into the same sized pot. Don't trim too much though...maybe about 1/4 to a 1/3 at the most. If you have too much foliage, you actually can cut the top of the trunk off and it will sprout new leaves.
