you do realise even though they have a big destroyer with loads of radars, it's only as good as the FFG (x) . this ship carry's 32 vls and 8 anti ship missiles whereas the american frigate has 32 vls but 16 anti ship missile. By the way if you don't know types of ships, a frigate is meant to be smaller, not the other way round lol.

Biliary Clinton AC-130s and A-10 would be no use to Australia. The F35 is more then capable of ground support role when combined with an attack helicopter (though we don’t have that many, we should get 48 or so F-16 multi roles to help carry the slack they’re cheap but effective 20mil compared to 170mil a unit). I’d recommend AH-1z viper in a ARH and AH role, they are designed marine proof so low maintenance cost when on LHD. replace the trash tigers. (My mate is a aerospace engineer who works on tigers and tells me they’re a white elephant). This is a much more cost effective initiative to supply CAS and will be effective enough for who we could possibly face alone and not part of an international task force. Then if we operated the medium lift UH-1 Venom on LHD to compliment the viper (share 85% common parts with AH-1Z viper) the logistic saving would be huge and when we did operate independently it would be cheaper and logistically easier. Now we would then really have a reason to fund an Expeditionary Marine Corps and get army off the sea. Just get army to give the old LAVs and a few bushmasters to the marines. (Still more then capable of handling threats in our littoral waters). Artillery and Anti Air battery and a battery with Surface launch Anti Ship Missles. More then enough to secure strategic sea lanes with naval support till the army can mobilise. I do agree we lack a longe rang strike aircraft craft though. It’s a massive capability shortfall. Along with our new frigates, there’s to many large vessels in our fleet. We need to shift to focus to including more Corvettes with an AA and AS focus. 2 x LHD, 3 x AWD, 9 x HCF, 8 x ASub, 14 x OPV. That’s a lot of crew members for a small fleet. We should reduce the 9 HCF to 7 and save (2 billion per ship) and use that money to raise the marine force capability and spend $1billion on 10 x 75m corevttes (200 million each) have Austal manufacture them locally. Pretty much a lot more bang for your buck approach that would actually be sustainable in a real world scenario. If something did happen we would only have what we have now and need to produce more. I’d rather we can punch out heavily armed corvettes then a frigate. The cost and time to build would be our only hope.

Australia desperately needs to have a large and capable military base developed on Cocos Island in Australia's north. This would extend the range of any land based long range missiles. Australia cannot ignore the strategic significance that is needed here.
@Nathan-ry3yu

I agree. Although I think Australia should build a mach larger navy fleet rather than just replacing old for new. A actual aircraft jump jet carrier would be good too. Including long range bombers. Either manned or unmanned, whatever can work best. Including a actual air superiority fighter jet. I don't believe the F35A can cut it. The air force should give the F35A to the army. And go for a new 6th generation Tempest fighter from the UK or a American new FX 6th generation air superiority fighter when they go into production. If Australia building 30 off the new OPV Then why don't move the 57mm gun forward on the lower front deck. Put a 21 cell sea ram missiles system on it where the main gun is now. Put 4 anti ship missiles in the middle of the ship. Put 2x2 torpedoe tube launcher on the sides off the back lower deck. Raise the middle off the helicopter hanger and put a 8 cell VLS for quad packed ESSM evolved sea sparrow missiles in the middle off the helicopter hanger and put a 2x 20mm guns on each side off that. And put a CIWS close in weapon system on the back.. have 20 off the OPV configured out like this for heavily armed attack class OPV, And have another 10 with the normal hanger for helicopter. Have them patrol in 3 units. 2x heavily armed attack class, and 1 with a helicopter. That would bring 10 patrol units x3 OPV. 20 attacks class and 10 with helicopter hanger. total off 30 OPV. Not all these OPV need a to have a helicopter hanger. And most can fill a role as a heavily armed attack class OPV. This would give coverage around our geographical area too. And coverage off that island you mentioned

Australia's ADF is probably more involved than they are letting on with projects or maybe I should say the government, regardless of local political issues with both parties. Where not part of the five eyes for no reason and we are now moving into hyper sonic weapons development and even though it had been done on a shoe string budget, it certainly caught the collective eye's of the USA to claim it as their own. Australia has been quietly developing military programmes since after ww2,they are no new comer in missile technology radar and the list goes on , we just don't boast . And I might add the new millennials, all they want is their comfort gadgets and play games and PC politics, nice distraction for the nation.

@@garrycoleman8537 Sir, I strongly recommend that you should properly study the history of the country's that you talk about. In WWII when my father and the other POW'S were liberated they picked out the German Soldiers who had tried to give the POW'S aid and risking death in doing so, from the typical NAZI Camp Soldier's who were normally tried, convicted and executed on the spot. The Red Army typically shot any Germans they could. Also, the Red Army was severely underpaid, but they were encouraged to subsidize their pay with looting and raping any Axis towns and women they captured.. Many of my friends were WWII Veterans who fought the Axis in nearly all theatre's of the war and due to my unusual circumstances, they were very open about their experiences.

The Arafura OPV really should be stretched another twenty meters to add a hangar to the flight deck, and armed more like the Royal Brunei Navy variant. Mk110 57mm gun, Mk46 30mm auto cannon port/ starboard, Mk15-1B Phalanx CIWS, RIM116-B2 Mk114 GML, plus Harpoon and MU90 or Mk54 torpedo capable. They need to be compact frigates. Arc Light Not recently... always. So it came as a shock when they went ahead and selected the most expensive option in the type 26. The recent push to have our gdp spending on Defense jumping to 1.3% and maybe beyond is also a sign of hope. Now if America would stop blocking our desire for nuclear powered subs, we could really get things going. Would be amazing for Canada to operate a dozen or more Astutes, or Virginias parting our arctic waters. They would be much more effect then the frigates.
4 жыл бұрын
@@Evil.Totoro Sounds promising, I am surprised that the US are reluctant to approve acquisition of nuke boats for Canada though what with your close cooperation with them. From what I understand, we would have no problems discussing the possibility of acquiring nuke attack boats with them, it is only our internal politics preventing us from looking at it seriously.
@Evil.Totoro
@Evil.Totoro 4 жыл бұрын
Arc Light yes it’s strange, but the US has taken it upon themselves to police the Arctic shelf, probably to gain more rights to the north west passage as it comes into being a much better route when the ice melts away. The US blocked Canada’s acquisition of Nuclear Subs back in the 90’s through a clause they signed with the UK to forbid them from selling Nuclear sub technology to any other nation else. So what would have a class of 10 or 12 nuclear subs ended up being scrapped. I suppose Australia being so far away and being able to aid the US in the western pacific is much more beneficial to them then having to go through red tape operating in Canadian waters if we had our own capabilities. Hopefully with Russia and China beginning to flex their muscles on the world stage Canada will be forced to take another look at subs. I would all for Japan building is a dozen Soryu class subs. Those guys know how to build boats fast, and on budget.

Enclosure I do not understand my the Australian media don't tell us as an Australian citizens how important this industry is by protecting Australia and major sealanes so that trade can happen between countries it is so vital to Australia and for our NAVY to grow the reasons are because we are a island country our import and export Are all done by sea more than any other country in the world if the shipping lanes were closed Australia would suffer immensely this is why we have allies like United states of America and also the United Kingdom plus other countries who are our allies also all are trying to achieve the same goal of trading with each other countries without getting harassed or threaten by war.

Aircraft carriers are fucking stupid in regards to the Australian navy, they have 150000 sailors, an aircraft carrier requires a third of the navy’s servicemen just to operate it, not to mention that the Australian navy hasn’t possessed fixed wing aviation assets since the 1980s which means that it would cost billions to purchase a second hand, or build a carrier, which would take decades without foreign help since Australian shipbuilding has never built a carrier, they’ve only been bought.

What of course is not being talked about, is the cost of modification of non-nuclear submarines based on existing designs and the time delays. We need an excuse to kick start a nuclear program here, we have abundant and cheap raw materials, just need to import some of China's cutting edge and far safer new generation powerplant technology and expertise. A joint program would be great for both nations economically and further cultural ties. Could easily take care of baseload power into the next century as well and at a far lower price for everyone. Interesting video, glad we are buying into the very best ... minus that key and vital powerplant. We do, as someone recently said on Sky news, 'we have a huge coastline and getting a submarine at effectively a brisk walking pace can take weeks of travel, versus days in a something that can cruise at 30+ knots and virtually never has to be refueled for the life of the vessel and is emission free'. For not even attempting to put the case for nuclear in any form now to the public, based on the 2 key areas of national security, one more pressing than the other, and that require strong and decisive action, is negligent. Energy, water, boarder & regional security should be front and centre. Now with stronger than ever conservative support ... maybe there is no time like the present. The increase in defence spending is to be applauded, geopolitics aside? Some of the defence budget though should be directed toward space, the types of equipment, training, technologies, the future jobs etc. and where the military sees itself playing a role. Will our involvement be civilian or military lead in terms of laying out the necessary infrastructure? Too many questions about our very near futures.

Birds of a feather flock together as they say. The only reason they stay in any form relevant on a global scene is because they got enough nukes. Russian military tech is in these regions cheaper and easier to get as their entanglement with Russia makes them suspicious to the USA and hamper weapon exports, see India. And tell India that Russian shit just works with their aircraft carrier… they don‘t seem to be quite convinced of that. Nor is the Russian military the best equipped. The navy is literally rotting away. While Russia finally gets around removing the scrap metal from the see they are not there yet and they had to escort their carrier to Syria with tugs as it was in imminent danger of breaking down every step of the way. Best trained? The Average US pilot has double the flight hours than the average Russian pilot. In the US they strife for about 200 hours a year in Russia you be lucky to get 100. And great achievement mostly air striking some random camel driver armed with outdated captured equipment. If it gets dirty Russia sends in “Wagner” fighters first and foremost and does not report or even acknowledge their losses. A1+ for upholding transparency and martial law. They also require a warzone that has already been pacified of any AA and Radar networks to do the job required of them. Hence why the USA is the only Nation that could actually pay for them to be kept in service despite much much better options available.

8800t, 150m long and only 32 VLS cells? That is nowhere near enough when we only have 12 major combatants - they should all be armed to the teeth. Not to mention pairing with AEGIS and that huge CEAFAR radar array, 32 VLS is simply a waste of the platform. If the Hunter class was just an ASW platform like they say, it wouldn't need AEGIS. The systems do not match the platform. Throw another 24-32 VLS behind the exhaust stacks like the British have on their Type 26, then maybe the Hunter class will actually be decent. This seems to be a constant with Australian defence purchases, we never buy enough, and we never arm them accordingly, especially RAN. 48 VLS on an DDG? Should be 64 or more. 40mm main gun system (which is a new platform not used anywhere else in the world) on the Arafura class OPV, when the same class ship has a 57mm main gun in the Brunei Navy. Everything we buy is overpriced, half baked and undergunned. We are not getting good value for money on our Defence purchases. I don't have a problem with the platforms, just the fit out. It never matches the current need or requirement to match or overmatch our potential enemies.

The conversion cost of both Canberra's is the same as buying a 1 new Canberra set up for f35B's add in that HMAS Choules needs to be replaced in less then 10 years it would make more sense to order 2 more Canberra's set up for f35s and keep the other 2 ships as they are giving more flexibility

@Billy most of the best nuclear subs have electrical,pump jets etc. A good stealth sub is one that doesn't need to snorkel,diesel electric must do this often where as nuclear do not(remains undetected) nuclear can go faster further and without needing to stop ,surface or refuel..missions can remain active longer. And if your sub can operate with the coolant pumps secured you go dark much more quite than electric. Cost is the only positive I'm seeing for non nuclear. It's old technology,Canada might sell the diesel electric subs they purchased from UK in the 70s. Otherwise only few options remain, dreadnought, astute, trafalgar, vanguard, Virginia, sea wolf, ohio and LA class. 4 of which are ballistic missile subs and the other 4 are attack hunter killers. Ask nicely and I'm sure UK or USA will sort something for a friend.

We need full on nuke powered subs and aircraft carriers, loaded with long range hypersonic anti ship missles, including nukes.

The how we can piss Commonwealth money up the wall day. Pointless really, our adversaries have deployed their people inside, like a trojan horse. Can those ships transform from sea to land variants?
