seem like aluminum was bad choice for the LCS trimaran independence class as the hauls start crack early on. Given that disaster, why would the same company propose to build aluminum catamarans and why would anyone in budgeting approve?

If only the USN deciders stuck with the base model for the mod1 and tinkers around with the mod2 then the USN would have had a dream operational by now.

Modular concept it can work for the Philippine navy. After all it took our planners a full 3 years to arm the JRCs with half the anti ship missiles.

Denmark should get land/truck based NSM like the used to have with Harpoon in the past, and NSM to use on current and future ships. The control station is the same for NASAMS so that might also be a good choice for future medium range air defence

Its whole design is to move containerized systems which would often be sensors. Much smaller ship, aluminum, and able to be built at many U.S. yards.

this is type of weapon could be equip on shipping ship or something that doesnt take up space for heli pad. cheap ship with these weapon. but then again, it might need the ship control hub to used these system and shipping ship may not able to integrated that quickly if needed. required future planning

Personally, I do like the design to an extent. I just feel like the idea of putting a relatively small amount of weaponry on a very easily hit target such as an on man vessel like this, and then Quiring a destroyer to not only protect itself and whatever it’s escorting, but also all of the little support vessels is just going to strain the capability of larger more capable surface ships. That being said, I do like the idea of having highly reliable, largely autonomous equipment on board a relatively small ship like this because it requires a reduced crew meaning that you can put more ships out there with reduce crew requirement to support larger warships. I’d say a ship like this with a 10 man crew as long as that crew had personnel that knew how to do minor repairs to keep the ship operational so she didn’t have to spend a month in say Sydney getting repaired before she could undergo joint trials with the Australian Navy would be a great idea.
@ThomasStell16 сағат бұрын
Think of these smaller usv ships as "Autonomous Drones" that follow a destroyer and perform tasks as directed by that destroyer. So it may task drone 1 to attack enemy ship 1... then have drones 2 and 3 attack the enemy carrier while it provides cover to the whole attack.
@jm245313 сағат бұрын
These can be relatively expendable. Shoot and reveal yourself under EMCON can be avoided by having the remote shooter via LOS methods. Who wants a 2.4 billion dollar AAW destroyer hunting an SSN when this thing can trail a sonar right on top of a sub and the sub won't hit it as it would reveal itself. It can act like the old radar picket and be the missile sponge.
@LoanwordEggcorn10 сағат бұрын
@matthewschuchardt684 Are you aware that the USVs can defend themselves at a minimum semi-autonomously? It's hard to hit a USV that has its own decoys, anti-air defenses, etc. The drones ADD to the overall defensive and offensive capabilities of the fleet, not reduce it.
@matthewschuchardt684Күн бұрын
You know I don’t necessarily think the idea of an unmanned warship is good. I actually think it’s going to be more costly, but that’s just me and I’m willing to at least see what the government can do with the idea. But who, in their right mind would use such a powerful name as defiant on what amounts to an unmanned arsenal sloop.
@jm245313 сағат бұрын
Someone defiant in changing the status quo
@ARCNA442Күн бұрын
The real question that I'm not seeing anyone asking is whether these small USVs have the endurance, speed, and sea keeping to keep up with 10k ton DDGs and 100k ton CVNs. If not, they could be far more of a handicap than a force multiplier. Traditionally, vessels this size have only been useful for coast defense missions, not extended duration blue water operations. While there is certainly some value in unmanned FACs operating in the First Island Chain, that's not really what is being advertised here.
@nerdwatch1017Күн бұрын
Well if we could put in mass these type of ships to patrol the coasts of the US and our other Territories that puts our manned bigger ships capable of longer missions out in open space

Hull speed will be around 18 knots. Sea Hunter / Seahawk would be a good comparison being designed unmanned from the start and NOMARs will be much larger. 10,000 @ 12 13391 @ 12 23056 @ 8 The OUSV ships both did stints over 5000nm at 7-8 knots manned on their deployment.

Don't know, for unmanned craft it's very big, saw a Leonardo unmanned sub, far smaller, harder to detect and can be parked under water, and restart when needed, and i'm sure far cheaper as this big unmanned ship! Would like to see the trails first. I mean if it carries more weapons bcs it has more place, if we lose one there is a lot of money gone.

Reloading at sea is critical. The biggest problem with the new age of drone warfare is spendy missiles can't survive. We'll be going back to flak cannons. Not for long range, but if you have hundreds of drones zooming in on your boat it's going to take a lot more than 8 missiles, sixteen with this system. China just rolled out a drone carrier, just sayin
