Hey Jason, I've been watching you for years and got caught up in your new PCT adventure. I got into very low-key backpacking a few years ago. Last weekend. I took my daughters, 15 years old and 13 years old. They had been asking me to do it and I decided it was time. Just an overnighter, but nonetheless real backpacking into the backcountry. We walked into the forest on Saturday and walked out on Sunday, setting up camp in a little open space under the trees. It was a real, achievable challenge for them and they loved it (along with some complaining). Vastly less ambitious than your odyssey, but you were in no small part an inspiration and I thought of you as we hiked. Thanks for the example and best of luck on the PCT!

Tomatoes are high in potassium. You hit the nail on the head! Leafy greens, oranges, and apricots are other good sources.

I remember those creek crossings when the water was filled with snow melt. Like you say, it feels like nails being pounded into your feet. What I did was stop and put my socks and insoles into the front pocket of my pack, then I crossed with my bare feet in the shoes. When I got to the other side, I sat down, dried my feet with a pack towel, put the dry socks on, wrung out the shoes, and then put the dry insoles into the damp shoes, followed by my feet in dry socks. Sure, the socks got a little damp and the exercise ate into my daily mileage, but it made a huge difference in how my feet felt. Once the blood started flowing to my feet again, the dampness in the socks dried quickly.

i was thinking the same but they probably want to keep moving and make miles// we either carry sandals or go barefoot and dry off like you but only doing like 8 miles we have time. i bet it would still be worth it though

Your strength and commitment to the trail is amazing! The snow and water crossings seam nearly endless. It good you have a trail family to help pull and push each other through. Adding more calorie and more sleep is a win win for gaining more energy. Stray strong be safe Frozen!!

It used to take me 10 + minutes to get used to frigid ocean water off the California coast in my teens before I could swim and body surf due to the severe leg pain from the cold water. I really do get your suffering through those stream crossings. It's Hard! One PCT hiker was using waterproof socks and inserts. Maybe that helped him. And with every stream crossing you are that much closer to Canada, Rooting for you Frozen (appropriate trail name for this part of the PCT) super proud of you! 👍

I have been watching you a long time and you are looking more thin then your normal. Your wifey was right about what she sees. Gotta find ways to eat more and get more rest on this trail it seems. Take care of yourself and hike on!

I could only imagine how tough those snow sections are, especially at the end of the day when you are tired. I can tell it is taking a toll on you and how much energy the lower elevation and woods hiking gives you. The stream crossings are a mix bag it seems. Some of the most beautiful waterfalls while also being worried about trying to cross and your feet freezing. You are one mentally tough dude thats for sure! Good motivation for me to push harder when I feel like giving up. Keep it up man you are killing it! P.S. I wonder if snowshoes would help in the snow. Kind of not fair that Bigfoot is basically wearing them with his size 14 shoe, lol.

😂 I think snowshoes at the end of the Sierra when it really warmed up might have been a good decision, but lugging them around with ice spikes seemed overkill to me.

If you want more energy add more animal fat to your meals. Butter/ghee(flavorful) or lard(bland) are an easy way to do that and don't actually have to be kept cold. But if you're going to go the butter route I suggest putting it in a zip lock as it will get softer than lard and you can add it to your morning coffee for a quick boost. If you find a butcher shop in a town see if you can't get the fat trimmings and you can make your own beef tallow and fat bytes on the trail. It's healthier than what we were told growing up. Animal fat doesn't equal body fat it equals quick energy.

Liking the new balance accelerate with liner if that's what you are asking. Probably won't last a full thru hike, but they are comfortable and they dry very fast.

@@FrozensAdventures Thanks for the response, I was more concerned about Trail Pants in the Sierra section, due to colder temps compared to shorts. Any pants seem to be more popular or work better than others. Often times during camp many discussions about gear and clothing are discussed. Again thanks really appreciate your content, looking at the PCT for 2025 🤙🏽
