In this weeks episode we continue with our preparations getting Atlas ready for the 4000 mile passage offshore across the Pacific Ocean. We have engine problems and clean our hull below the water line. Also we take a walk on Taboga Island and climb 800 ft in sweltering conditions

When in the water in the warmer seas and you are scraping underneath it is worth getting a head cover over your head as you can get nasty infections in your ears from the debris floating around. It could even be a scarf tied around to protect the ears.

What about your heat exchanger? Have you recently cleaned it? Calcium and other deposits can pass through the sea water and become a fixed to the interior tubes of the heat exchanger causing eventual blockages reduced water being able to pass through. I have used muratic acid mixed in fresh water flushed through the heat exchanger to clear out deposits. A little prevention is worth having to buy a new heat exchanger. 💲💲💲
@TheSailingBrothers

We don't have a heat exchanger on the engine as it is raw water cooled. We had a heat exchanger on a previous boat and that was blocked up horribly

I had exactly your problem - water pumping but less than usual. After launch it was difficult to get the water flowing. I thought it would be a new water pump but it turned out that the cam was worn. Great video as usual guys. I had a twister with a Bukh 10 hp, I used to have a few problems sometimes when starting the engine it would not suck water through, I had to prime the pump to get it to work. It turned out to be the back plate in the pump that the impeller runs against had become worn and not forming a good enough seal. Replaced the pump and all was good. You could bypass the sieve and take the sea water supply straight to the pump and see if it makes a difference to the amount of water coming out the exhaust. I think it is just you two worrying about something that is probably ok anyway. Displacement activity, rather than worrying about the journey ahead of you. Remember it’s just the same water just a bit more of it.
@TheSailingBrothers
@TheSailingBrothers Жыл бұрын
Thanks Richard The water pump is less than 2 years old. We certainly checked it and put in a new Impeller didn't seem to make any difference 🤔. Next step is to remove the strainer and see if that makes any difference. Maybe it's all in our heads as we are just worrying too much 😭 Once we get on our way it will all be left behind 😁⛵

Have you checked the exhaust mixing elbow. They foul with carbon in the exhaust gas and slow the flow of water. Assuming you have a cooling water thermostat, that is worth checking for build up and functionality Agree with buying some ear cleaner. We call it swim ear and it is a mixture of isopropyl alcohol and an acid, citric or acetic I think
@TheSailingBrothers

We have checks pretty much everything on the engine Geoff. Can't seem to find anything that's at fault. Going to continue to monitor engine temperatures. Next time we go swimming under the boat going to cover our ears I think 😉😁

Vinegar is a simple but effective cooling channel cleaner. Ideally set up a 5 gallon bucket with a small 12 volt pump drawing the vinegar from the bucket directly to the line downstream of the saltwater pump, then connect a temporary hose from the exhaust injection line back to the bucket and circulate until it's filthy. repeat if necessary, if you get no cloudy/muddy circulation you're good. In a pinch just take the hose from the salt water intake into the jug of vinegar, but this is very wasteful as you'll need many gallons of vinegar. The engine cooling channels in ALL engines, but especially the salt water cooled ones need regular cleaning. Some people like to fill the engine with the cleaning solution then let is sit and wait, but if you do this ensure the system has an opening for the bubbling up pressure to be relieved.

I had the same problem and i accidently found out what it was after lots of dismantling this and that. It turned out to be a hose that passes under the engine and thus not visible and it had kinked. I only found it because i dropped a spanner that went under the engine and i had to get it. There is a product called aqua ear in Australia that you put in after a swim. It is cheap and alcohol based.

We have coppercoat and in tropical waters we need to scrape every 6 weeks or so. It’s normal, much better than the traditional antifauling

I had same engine and same fault. It turned out to be the pump. If the brass cover in front of the impeller isn’t very ,very close to the impeller front it won’t bump properly. Also if the shaft bearing is slightly worn , same problem. You can see wear marks on the brass cover. Try turning it over? John
@TheSailingBrothers

Hey John Our pump is less than 2 years old. We will try turning the cover over and see if that helps. Thanks for your advice we really appreciate it John 🙏

I have yet to hear of a boat in the tropics where coppercoat was effective. And on your passage to FP you will grow a huge farm of gooseneck barnacles, no matter what antifouling you have. When you arrive, do not bother to try to scrape them off, if you anchor for a week or so they will all die and drop off. Anyway, forecast looks good with northerlies helping you along, just like I had last April. Have a blast, and don't forget to take time for a swim every few days. I hope you catch lots of fish, and enjoy the pelagic birds.

I suspect you had a number of issues collaborating to cause the overheating issue. The inlet although not badly blocked, the impeller although not bad , the encrusted prop and hull would definitely have an effect on engine strain but of course you need to also factor in the warmer climate! As annoying as it might be there may be some benefit in removing the engine housing enclosure to at least allow some heat dissipation from the engine when running it for some time. or if possible install a fan into the housing? Great down to earth, as it is reality channel. Good luck on the crossing.
@TheSailingBrothers

We definitely think it's a bit of everything as you said we are in a warm climate and the water is warm. We could remove the stairs to get some air into the engine but it is so damn loud 📢 maybe a fan would help out. Thanks Andrew ✌️⛵😁

your engine's cooling water issues are exactly the same as my Yanmar 1GM raw water cooled engined had. The problem was deposits INSIDE the engine water passages reduced the 5/16" input to 1/8". The fix was 2 plus hours of recirculating a de-scaler through the engine..Good luck guys.

White vinegar and rubbing alcohol half and half will help with any thing trying to infect ears.. and i think vinegar can be pushed through piping for the engine to clear stuff inside. unless you can get your hands on some Barnacle Buster... it's all that warm water... sheesh breeds bugs lol
