This project doubled in cost because the government wanted to add room for heavy rail extension from varsity lakes to gc airport, after the project started.

@@AnarchyEnsues The rail corridor has been reserved since 2003 and is hosted in a report on the TMR site. I will share one piece of waste for you,, that being the costly curve designed into the service Rd bridge was to retain the derelict once graffitied tin shed near the sewer plant on Talle creek because no one in GCCC wanted to relocate it due to its disabled community use. For all the work and 3 bridges the M1 is still HALF the cost per KM of light rail stage 3 ,,, Go figure.. Cheers

@@colinmay151 no, absolutely not. I'm saying that building more lanes causes more people to use the road, so the traffic is never solved. We should be aiming to build a public transport alternative that alleviates enough demand to make the current road sufficient
@colinmay151

@@Lumiobyte There is of course no evidence to support your claim. Population and Demand drives USE. Go look at the M1 at 6am and you will see less than 1% of travel being undertaken could be achieved via public transport. @Lumiobyte

@@colinmay151 there is plenty of evidence to support the idea of induced demand. It's a very well understood topic that urban planners have understood since the 60s and yet we as a country have continually leaned further and further into car dependence until we've reached this point where the problem of road congestion is impossible to fix. There are plenty of academic papers and studies that have proven this idea. And yes, you're right in that a very low proportion of travel is on PT - but that should drive us to invest in PT! For e.g. a trip from Helensvale to Roma St on the train only takes about 20 minutes longer than by car (50min vs 1h9min) when the highway is free-flowing during off peak periods. You can imagine that during the morning gridlock, the train will actually become the option that takes less time, and also you can spend the time reading, working on your laptop, relaxing etc instead of bashing your steering wheel while moving at 5km/h. The reason that PT mode share is low despite this clear benefit is because of how difficult it is to access - someone who lives in Pacific Pines needs to add a minimum of 25 minutes onto their journey on the bus to reach Helensvale station, not to mention that the bus they'll be taking only shows up every HOUR. To ride a bike is dangerous due to a lack of protected bike lanes, and to walk would take over an hour. The issue here is lack of alternatives - cars don't have to be the way, we have simply chosen that path. And beginning to shift our focus away from road upgrades and towards providing alternatives to road use instead is the way we bring about a great benefit to society in all ways - less carbon emissions, more exercise and physical activity, more social interaction, more time to relax and less stress, and more freedom of movement for our kids so they don't need to be driven by parents, etc etc...

To be clear,,, A plan is when a design and funding is allocated or at least forecasted. Anything else is just a dream, aspiration or wish. As such there is ZERO plan to build fast heavy rail south of Varsity. DESPITE the TMR (still) hosting a 2003 report stating it will be completed by 2015. Facts do get in the way of a good story.

For those who think this is a waste of $$'s the upgrade is grossly overdue, but the Govt's short sightedness will NOT see the upgrade sufficient for the future. In saying that, not sure if the cost is at 80:20, like M1 upgrade in all other states, or that clown Albanese has changed the goalposts for Qld to 50:50. Arguably the biggest waste of a govt. which ot date are clearly anti-Australian public, incl. those that voted for them. OK for the pollies, they're sponsored by QANTAS. For those unfamiliar with the area, more notes on the video Sth of 19th Ave [eg. name of off/on ramps & shopping centre] would be appreciated. I take it the drone IS travelling South???

Yes to good efficient public transport ,,, so why are so many blind to the several billions being blow on GCLR 4 that only replaces an existing bus and will ensure fast efficient rail is NEVER extended past Varsity Lakes and we can not afford a truly effectively high frequency zero emission bus fleet.

@@Lumiobyte To be clear,,, there is NO PLAN for Heavy Rail south of Varsity ,,, only an aspirational political interest / fantasy thought now pushed a further 20 years back from a project that in 2003 was planned to be completed by 2015. Light rail causes traffic disproportionally to the poor value it delivers for its high cost.
@Lumiobyte
@Lumiobyte Ай бұрын
@@colinmay151 Light rail is significantly more efficient than buses. Light rail vehicles have capacity for 300 passengers, 80 of them seated, whereas a bus can carry about 60 total. Light rail comes at the same or better frequencies as the buses it replaced and there are measurable economic benefits to progressively pedestrianising the entire corridor along the beach - increased foot traffic, which light rail helps deliver, is only ever a good thing for businesses

@@colinmay151 and also the land for the heavy rail extension is preserved and it's a recurring point in future Queensland transport plan documentation. Unfortunately we don't have enough money to build everything at once, especially with the Sunshine Coast extension currently kicking off, but I can see it being announced towards 2030. It's also a lot more difficult to justify that extension economically, as the area around the new stations is still very low density compared to surfers/broadbeach and ridership will be low until there are planning reforms or transit oriented development around the stations.

Do those who say roads create traffic ever look beyond their own vision and life circumstances to understand who and how roads are used and how they generate revenue that pays for pensions, health and welfare. Do any of those people go out all look at the congestion building at 5.30am from people and vehicles that can not ever be replaced with Trams and Trains ?

I cannot believe the total lack of understanding why these roads are needed. People buy stuff from shops, trucks deliver stuff to shops, so roads essential to transport goods across this vast country. If you want to save on roads, stop buying stuff. Yes, waiting for reply, use trains….trains don’t go where stuff is needed.
