thats like saying lets give Teachers guns to protect against live shooters. I say, leave it to a professional. Firefighters are not just citizens that fight fire. They are trained professionals and are required to past physical tests. I understand where you're coming from, who wouldn't want to be able to protect their home. But I can tell you with experience, these fires are not your average fire. These are walls of flames, that can grow higher than the house itself and winds over 50mph thrusting them. Believe me when I tell you, I've been in it, its very scary and you don't want to be there.

not sure you noticed, but there are alot of humans in this world. Most live in So Cal. and need places to live :)_. Which means realist-ate and geography. People like to live in less congested areas like this to get away from the crowds, traffic, thieves, etc... The Malibu fire last year which I personally witnessed burned down alot of celebrities homes, and that area is also prone to wildfire. Does that mean no one should build there ? There are laws set in place regarding the brush set back. People live near the ocean where there are natural disasters like flooding, hurricanes, etc.. and that property isnt cheap by anyone's standards, but people choose to live there despite the risks.

Never mind the garden hose, useless. But all of these homes seem to have swimming pools. I was thinking the same thing, I wouldn’t want some who’s probably just trying to cover his ass telling me I can’t try to protect my own home. A garden hose can’t stop everything but it can stop some and those particular guys he was talking about had a huge stone wall to somewhat protect them and they don’t seem to be in a situation where they could be trapped or anything. If the garden hose buys them a few extra minutes till the firemen can put out the main fire that’s all they need, they don’t have to put out the whole hillside. That a fine last name you have by the way

Who in the hell even thinks they will be safe building a home in such areas? Especially when I've lived in Compton for decades and have watched this occur, year after year after year after year. And I'm not even kidding here. Makes no sense, and yes, I feel badly for those affected every year. Wealthy enough to build but nonsense when you watch this happen eventually? Fire department personnel from outside of the area being deployed and people waiting until the very last minute to evacuate. Dry brush from years of drought here have left many areas very susceptible to the slightest heat wave, spark, illegal fire or fireplaces without adequate grates to keep an ember from escaping, then the high winds that have been a part of the So Cal landscape ever since I was a kid, now in my mid 60's and have to watch this again....hard to feel a lot of compassion when they should know better...insurance companies cower as homes go up in flames. We recently had an unparalleled heat wave in the last week and it seems inevitable something was going to hit the extremely dry brush and the news points out the tragedy, but seriously...they didn't know it was a possibility in these risky areas in the first place? Did they not think it would occur or were they all so supposedly well off that they figured it would never happen to themselves? Insane...unwise to live there and not have the brush properly managed, then if the cut too much brush, if we have a major storm event, the mudslides beyond belief. Bible talks about building a good house on rock instead of on sand. I shake my head when I think of the losses they will experience. If they gave me a home up there, no way in Hades I would even think of living in these areas. When do we learn? When realtors develop any sort of conscience...don't hold your breath, folks. They'll rebuild and then sell other dumb youngish people on the idea of living in these same areas. Always happens decade after decade till Kingdom Come. They should not live here....and now, seems many will no longer. Very sad the backstory to news coverage. RPV seems much safer and they can have fires too, past tense, but nothing like what we're seeing currently. Even Bixby Knolls, if you have such means, makes far more sense. Torrance even and other cities, Manhattan Beach, Huntington and coastal communities. Dry brush burns, humans.

Harry Krebs Note to homeowners, leave when you are told so you’re not getting in the way of the men trying to save your home. Those people were at no risk of life or limb, they could just walk across the street. If the truck had parked forward or backwards a bit one of the hoses would have had to go across their driveway and I guarantee you the woman who ripped her front end of her car off would have ran over the hose. People are so fucking self centered. “Make sure you save my home but I’m going to need you to move your truck because I waited to leave and now I’m hungry and want to run to Panera quick”

I worked a Reed Hycalog facility in Houston and in the Hazardous waste building had a deluge fire system. Not sure if they could be adapted for a house but they could take a look at a fire system for the surrounding areas of the homes that can utilize the time before fire personnel can get there. The deluge system appeared to have water in pipes in place to be used to extinguish the fire, Nupi America's makes a plastic pipe with fittings that can be joined with electricity , a network of pipe full of water may be part of a solution. One would think some kind of cactus type plant might grow where the dead grass can't.
