A detail I love about this movie that a lot of people miss is that, when Newt drifted with the Kaiju brain; it's a two-way street. And since the kaiju you are a hive mind they (the kaiju masters) knew all of the information that Newt did about the Yeagers (Cherno Alpha, Crimson Typhoon, and Striker Eureka) and they use that information to specifically design Otachi and Leatherback to take out the Jeagers but they didn't know about Gypsy because Newt didn't know about gypsies capabilities.

A few details that really make the first scene much darker, that people usually don't get: 1- They drift together, but also with the Jeager, so when it loses an arm for instance, their brains send them an impulse thinking they just lost an actual arm; 2- Their minds were still connected when his brother died, so he literally experienced what it means to die devoured by a Kaiju, while also feeling his brother's terror until the last second. That's so very dark.

What I loved about Mako and Raleigh's relationship in the drift is that it WASN'T a love story in the traditional sense. When you LITERALLY go into someone's mind, it goes deeper than affection, love, lust, or anything like that. A connection that deep can't be constrained by a word like love, because even when you love someone, you can never TRULY understand every single part of them. Being drift compatible is beyond that. It's incredible.

I'm usually not as sensitive kid scenes in movie as Nikki is (few people are), but Mana Ashida as young Mako holding her little shoe and crying breaks my heart. @@Jigsaw407 I heard some people justifying the extreme dark scenes by saying films nowadays are shit on digital instead of film and can now people can see how the shot will look while filming. Removing the need to use excessive lighting for shots. I would believe this logic were it not for the fact that there are still films these days that have dark and atmospheric scenes that actually let people see what the heck is going on. Plus the many digital tools that can change the lighting of a shot. There are no excuses for a film to give people eye strain just trying to watch it.

For a 2013 film it still amazes how much the visual effects, sound, and overall look still holds up; like it doesn't overstay it's welcome; sure the neon lighting might be a bit annoying but to me how the lighting works in this film gives off this unique charm that the sequel doesn't have. That goes double for the kaiju look and how good the Jaegers look they are all practical and not too campy or too cartoonish And I'm still geeking out over the fact that Del Toro was able to ask Valve if it was okay to use GLaDOS from Portal to voice Gipsy Danger's A.I. system. So much heart and love was definitely put into this movie.

I've already seen this movie probably 10 times and I always love it. It's a great ride and I personally chose to take Rayleigh and Mako's relationship as something platonic. IIRC they shot a scene where they kiss out of the survival pods but they went with the scene where they don't kiss because they felt it was better to let people interpret it however they wanted it and that forcing a romantic relationship between them didn't add anything to the movie.

7:37 Props to Raleigh for actually managing to stay alive. For one thing, this is in Alaska and probably winter, so he was out there for hours, piloting Gipsy by himself, until around midday. Couple that with the damage Gipsy received, and Raleigh feeling Yancy's death in his own brain, it's a god-given blessing he's still alive, and even more so that it's not rendered him mad. 8:58 After destroying a pair of smaller Jaeger's too. Also her name is Mutavore. 9:11 And they just said the Jaeger program was shut down. The Sydney Shatterdome was able to get Striker Eureka, the only Mk V in service, up and the Hansens were able to curbstomp her. The thing is. It is a love story tbh. For humanity itself. For the place each and every single person has in society no matter how eccentric or weird. As for Mako and Raleigh. Yeah, it’s a love story. And the best part of Pacific Rim and the way Toro wrote it, is there is no way to deny that theirs is a love story. But no one can say it was romantic. You can interpret it as such. But the way their relationship builds and plays out, it doesn’t have to be. And that in itself is another absolutely beautiful aspect of this film.

One of the biggest things I liked about how this movie turned out is that in the end, it is not romantic love. But they do love each other beyond what normal people can comprehend due to them drifting with each other. It's the bonds of closeness brotherhood (brother/sisterhood), soulmates, companionship, kindred spirits, brother/sister at arms, everything that creates it. That's why they did not kiss at the end. It would be inappropriate.

The darkness and raining also helps with the CGI and effects, to help blend them in and cover up things that may seem off under harsh lighting making things look more realistic, kind of like that first reveal of the T-Rex in Jurassic Park.

There is no situation that this movie's soundtrack can't make more awesome. One detail from the novelization/the original script that never made it into the movie proper is that Mako's father was a swordsmith. So her adding the sword to Gipsy and killing Otachi with it is her finally getting vengeance

Guillermo del Toro know his craft. I love how versatile he is! He can make a badass movie like this one, full of action and references to the Old monster movies and Anime mecha Style, he can make awesome horror movies or love stories...but he always does it right! This has lots of Evangelion vibes, but I love it´s not a Live Action version of it but it´s own version. And yes, this movie is super fun!

There's some absolutely fantastic references and interpersonal beats taken from Evangelion for this movie, especially mecha-versus-monsters and Mako being an expy for the character Rei. This is one of my benchmark movies that I routinely ask people if they have seen once a movie conversation erupts. We saw it in IMAX 3D and were blown away. Could not recommend it enough and wish that Guillermo del Toro could have told his bigger story if more people had seen this in the theater. He explained that this movie was the end of the war and that subsequent movies would deal with the beginning or the earlier years of the war itself. Instead, we got Pacific Rim: Uprising which was good in that it was more of the same universe, but was definitely missing del Toro's guidance. Great reaction!

I watched this so many times in theaters. I really wish they waited to let Guillermo do the 2nd one, it wasn't horrible, but wasn't worth watching more then once. the show Pacific Rim: The Black was pretty good to me, just 2 seasons, wish it could have had one more season though, it didn't feel complete and I wanted more lore dumps, and you learn more about some Kaiju Cults, and takes place some time after the 2nd film. but as a lifelong fan of both Kaijus and Mobile Suits, PR has a special place in my heart.

1, This film is so gloriously silly and self-aware you can't help but like it. 2, The child actor is called Mana Ashida, and apparently everyone spoiled her rotten including the director, but she couldn't pronounce Del Toro correctly and it embarrassed her, so Guillermo de Toro gave her permission to call in "Totoro-san" instead, and that’s adorable.
