Deltoro said in the special features, I believe, that he made everything look worn down on purpose instead of looking all shiny and new. I really like how close they made it to real life, like the details that the resources used for the mecha were pretty old during this scene. the problem with with uprising is that was many things pacific rim isint, uprising colorful and fast paced, rim was dark gritty and took its time to introduce some of the characters, and yes pacific rim had actual proffesional pilots in the mechs while uprising got some teenagers in a bunch of robots that moved like it was just some dude in a costume.

It also the feel. Pacific rim was like a surviers movie where every battle mattered and every loss hurt. The jeagers were super weapons designed to salvage humanity and were piloted by the best of the best. In uprising they were destroying cities as if it is a video game. Jeagers aren't considered as those weapons that entire nation put effort in building and a mere teenager can build one and are used as like future tanks. And teenagers are piloting the yeagers. Like pacific rim was a masterpiece and uprising was knockoff anime

One day I found myself at the mall with nothing to do... looked at the available movies, this was the only thing that looked entertaining for a couple of hours. God damn, I was caught off-guard by how bloody amazing the film was. I was expecting typical dumb Michael Bay-tier trash but what I got was a genre masterpiece. It's one of those few pieces of media that, given the opportunity, I would refuse to change anything about. Del Toro knew exactly what kind of movie he wanted to make, and executed it perfectly. I was humming that theme tune all the way home. My parents looked at me weird when I tried telling them about this amazing movie with giant robots punching aquatic aliens.

What's so excellent about Pacific Rim is that it really makes us *feel* the scale! These aren't just massive robots, they're unbelievably heavy and complicated machines operated and maintained by an entire facility which is itself funded by a joint program supported from the entire world. When it move, all that impact follows. It's slow, absorbs the impacts as its' dispersed along the many mechanical joints in the body. It's not an action hero, or a gundam, or anything like that. It's a massive fucking machine! I especially love the steady, upscaling when we're introduced to the first true jaeger interaction. We start with two humans walking along, the suiting up, then a big bulkhead door, then the interior of the head, still following the perspective of the humans. We see them walk in and observe the true size of this interior, just before we see the head from the outside for the first time. Just the head! And it already looks massive! At this stage we begin to feel the inertia of this sibstantial upscalling, as "The Drop" occurse. The massive mechanical component descends at an accelerating pace, and slows down prematurely before contact, indicating to the viewer that this is something incredibly heavy. As it conncets we see the same thing; inertia, inertia, inertia, constant wobbling of parts absorbing all the movement and energy that is at play, the head slowly turning, the hatches closing, everything! After this point we are presented with the coor powering up, now showing us the head clearly in proportion to the torse, showing just how small said head is in comparison. But we don't get to see the whole jaeger yet. Instead we focus on the abundance of humans and workings around the Jaeger, again making sure to display to us just how massive they are. Finally as Gipsy leaves the Anchorage Shatterdome (IIRC), we get our first proper shot of the whole thing. At this point the head of the Jaeger, which had earlier been shown as massive, is but a little part of the massive contraption, but thanks to the excellent directing, we are able to understand the true size of this monster!

Guillermo del Toro chose to use actual cockpit mockups, and practical models for his movie, which made it so visceral and real; because the actors were actually interacting with an entire real cockpit that moved and affected them throughout the movie (unlike the second one where he wasn't directing, which used a shitload of CGI). Also, the first one made sure to convey the sense of scale and weight that the Jaegers have, which made it feel so realisitc. The second one had the Jaegers just jumping and flipping around like Power Rangers, which made everything look cheap and fake.

I absolutely love the old-school tech feel of the inside of the old Jaegers. They just didn't recreate that old-fashioned rough-and-tumble asthetic in Uprising.

I never imagined that the guy who directed Pan's Labyrinth also directed this movie. They're two very different genres but del Toro somehow nails the visuals in both of them, as well as the story.

Oh! If they ever decided to unpack this Universe? They wouldn't have to produce any other Mecha/Kaiju franchises. For those that don't know, The Pacific Rim Universe does in fact have a Universe "Bible". There's a long historical timeline just loaded with characters, action, events, drama, mystery and intrigue all written out by Guillermo del Toro and Writer/franchise creator,Travis Beacham. According to Beacham some 50+ Jaeger pilots fought in the 12-year War. We only met 12 in Pacific Rim. And yes, this is to go along with close to 30(!) built Jaegers. Again, we met a handful in the movie. If you've never Read it, check out the graphic novel written by Travis Beacham himself *PACIFIC RIM: TALES FROM YEAR ZERO* and learn about the Mother & Father of the Jaeger program; a particularly fascinating little soap-opera unto itself that I want to see presented on the screen. Also, google "An Yuna & Pan Soo Yi" A Pacific Rim story I desperately want to see presented in some format.
