I was delivering once to a house with a fractional number (like 22-1/2). I called the customer and asked them if their house was on the East or West side of the street. They said it depends on which way you're going. No sir, no it does not.

First you really shouldn't expect a customer to know east from west and second as a delivery driver YOU should know even numbers run down one side and odd on the other and half numbers like 22.5 will either be between 22 and 23 or behind house 22.

@@CrainialCommando Completely agree. When I was doing orienteering, and after that when I was a delivery driver I knew the cardinal directions, now I have to think about it for a while. For the vast majority of people relative direction is what we think about. I currently live in a half-number. What's really annoying is when the delivery companies re-calculate the half address as being in a completely different location than near the full-addressed house and misdeliver the package.

I was a contracting manager for years and from my experience the "consistent" customers will usually get remembered after a few trips but the "once in a blue moon" ones will most likely get their packages sent back (code 02). Several years ago, we had some crappy neighbors next door to us in an apartment complex. When we were moving out, we had a box of fish oil delivered to our old apartment (while we were still paying the rent, but after we moved out). Someone stole the package. It had to have been those neighbors because no one else could have even seen that the was a package at our door. We always thought it would have been hilarious to watch them steal that package just to find it was filled with bottles of fish oil. Amazon sent us a new package for free, so for us, it was just really funny.

I used to be a scout leader, and every year our troop would do a food drive. On one weekend the boys would go door-to-door to let the residents know about the food drive, and the second weekend we would collect the donations left on the porches in bags the boys had given the residents. One of the items donated, I kid you not, was a can of "fish assholes".

@@additudeobx I'd love to see someone put a bull snake in a box and set it on their porch. Bull snakes may not be poisonous, but they can be really feisty -- the only snake that I've ever been bitten by was a bull snake even though I've had more close encounters with rattlesnakes. That includes the time I fell on top of a rattlesnake out in a field -- my father said that he couldn't tell which of us was in the bigger hurry to get away. And the way many people are scared of snakes, even ones that aren't poisonous, it would be great. Porch pirates would truly deserve a rattlesnake in a box, but a bull snake would likely be a little less of an issue.

One of the benefits of living in a small town was that the delivery drivers knew where I worked. If I got a package on a normal workday, they would drop it off at my workplace. As a delivery driver for a world wide company we are always trying to watch out around us to avoid being followed and leaving packages in plain sight.. Delivery mistakes happen because of many factors, not all associated with the driver, however because the driver is the last to touch the package before delivery, all the blame and burden is placed on the driver. Having driven up to places to deliver, and been molested by dogs (bitten 8 times in 18 years), angry Karen's, and yes even having customers pull guns on me, our job is not easy and we do not get paid near what brown gets paid, for having to deal with the complaints, rude and vicious customers on a daily basis. We do have our good customers and we remember them when our days are crap. Remember your delivery driver has to deal with their terminal managers, incorrectly loaded trucks, traffic and construction, finding houses where the customer has removed or covered up the addresses, vicious dogs, narrow clogged streets, rude and angry customers, porch pirates and cops that enjoy making our days harder, the weather and customers that don't clear their driveways or walkway. The list could go on and on. Most of us like our jobs and we strive to be the best we can be, the rude customer entitlement mentality takes its toll on us.

I lived in a not-so-nice area in Pontiac, MI. I put a sign on my front door "All deliveries back door please" with an arrow pointing to the back door. I made sure it was safe and uncluttered and that there was automatic lighting at night. No delivery people ever had a problem, and I never had a porch pirate problem (back door wasn't visible from the street). I once had a large flat screen TV mistakenly delivered to me. I called Fedex to tell them it was delivered to the wrong address. It took me several attempts to get them to understand I was not complaining about a non-delivery; I was telling them it wasn't mine and they needed to take it to the correct person. They were stunned. I later told neighbors (acquaintances, not friends) about it and they told me I was stupid because it was a "free" gift. Incredible. I have since moved to rural northern lower Michigan and have rediscovered what "civilization" really is: people that take care of each other instead of taking from each other.

One of the first things I did after a delivery driver delivered a package with a valuable item to a random neighbor's house a couple houses over that at the time I couldn't identify in the delivered photo (luckily the neighbor was honest and brought it over to my house the following day).. was I got up on a ladder to clean my house numbers (admittedly, they were filthy and noted down the type of bulb and replaced the then non-working bulbs of the house numbers with a much brighter LED bulbs (bright enough it actually illuminates the wall and ground a bit. I order a bunch of things online. Never had this issue ever again as I now have the cleanest, and brightest address numbers on the entire block, and if a delivery driver delivers to a wrong house, then it[s by their own negligence, rather than the hard to see numbers that I had and my neighbors seem to have too (same style address numbers and some too with burnt out bulbs).

More and more people are turning to crime to survive. My city was considered solidly middle class twenty years ago, but today we are lower-middle with a lot of folks in poverty. Most jobs pay about the same as they did more than a decade ago, yet the cost of living has jumped. Criminals need to be caught and face repercussions, but lets not lose sight of why these things happen with ever increasing frequency. Crime pays in an economy that doesn't give many other ways out for certain people.

The worst one was that an Omaha steaks delivery was sent and delivered on a day. I had surgery, so I was not at home. Here in the UK it is standard procedure for Royal Mail to knock on the door and hand-deliver the parcel to the owner. If the owner isn’t in, they ask a neighbour of the owner to hold on to the package, then fill in a pre-made note that they fill in the details, stating they attempted delivery, when attempt was made, how many packages, and whom they were left with. That note then gets put through the mail slot in the owners front door. When owner gets home, they see the note and collect the package from the neighbour. If the neighbour try’s to claim they don’t have it, they have to explain what they did with it.

Who is "they"? If USPS, undeliverable is often returned to sender (postage may be due). 3rd class, ads, and bulk delivery is trashed. (Employees were prosecuted for removing pennies from scrapped ads back in the 80's.) The remaining goes to the MRC, which was often a bin for eventual identifying and storing. If not claimed, sometimes years later, some is recycled and the rest is destroyed or sold. Prescription meds would probably be destroyed since they'd expire or require a prescription. Occasionally valuable items are in letters and packages, thus the need to open. Our MRC found things like a passport, a will, illegal drugs and cash on rare occasions. Probably 99% was advertisements and packages valued at under $5.

Considering I live in a high crime area myself, I’ve started making use of Amazon‘s offer for the Amazon locker. I’ve also decided to shift all of my mail to the post office and a PO Box. It’s capable of handling parcel deliveries. Sure, it cost a bunch of money about every six months, but it’s well worth it for the additional security. Amazon does deliver to PO boxes as do many other vendors. So, if you have the ability to take advantage of greater security, (I’ll be at at slightly higher cost), do it. You’ll at least be assured that your package reaches its destination (which just happens to be your hands, and nobody else’s!).

Seriously? It was OBVIOUSLY EMPTY! It was one of those flat boxes open on both ends where you slide out the styrofoam piece in the middle that is surrounding the actual object you bought. So stupid.

The reason that people will happily pirate a porch without knowing the value of the item is because, most of the time, the risk is very very low. You framed it in terms of committing a crime, and in true lawyer fashion, you are technically correct. The converse is the adage, "It's only a crime if you get caught (and they can prove it)." I don't have the stats in front of me, so some of this may be anecdotal, though I strongly suspect that the numbers will bear out m y suppositions. Most porch piracy occurs in places where the victims cannot afford (or are not allowed to install) ring cameras. My home is one such place. But let's say that there are cameras and witnesses and all that. Then what? My $12 pack of razor blades got stolen. Or my $4 pack of blue paper, or some silly trinket that I barely remember ordering anyway. I have two options: Call Amazon, or call the police (or both, potentially). If I call Amazon, they will almost certainly refund or replace it and another one will be at my door in a day or two. If I call the police, they might eventually send out someone to take my report and take up another hour of my time (and theirs), but most likely it'll be a phone report and go sitting on a stack just in case they find a stash of packages with no owners or something. There is almost no forensic evidence available (except maybe camera footage, if you are that fortunate), and it's basically a cold case before it even starts. I once had a $350 package stolen from my porch, and called both Amazon and the police; Amazon required that I call the police first to get an incident number because of the value of the package. Amazon sent a replacement overnight, and the police sent the first available detective to take my statement and begin the investigation. Based on how I presented the story, you can guess which one arrived first. But the worst irony is what the package contained: a camera system that I had planned to install since my landlord wouldn't. The risk of going to jail correlates closely with the chance that the package is worth risking jail over. That's why this continues. And the cheap POS quality of my new camera is the reason I had to ask my employer for special consideration to have personal packages delivered there instead (normally against policy). As a result, I actually order significantly less delivery items than I otherwise would because I don't want to abuse the privilege my employer is extending to me. As an aside, all of my delivery instructions say to call my cell phone upon delivery, so I can retrieve it or have someone get it for me. While Amazon's grocery delivery is amazing about doing this, I have only once gotten the requested call from a Prime delivery or third-party, and that was because it was heavy and they needed a hand. Failures all the way up and down the chain. But I guess somehow it's financially worth it?
@sabinrawr
@sabinrawr Жыл бұрын
Another thing I thought about is that Amazon Lockers are a really good solution, if one can get past the vandalism issue, if a location happens to be convenient for you, and if your packages will fit in the allotted space. Same goes for UPS Store, FedEx Office, or whatever similar stores might be nearby.

What is the legal position on whether it has been delivered or not. Im guessing that if stolen from the driver’s hand it would count as not delivered so Amazon or Apple etc. would take the hit but if stolen from the door or porch it would count as delvered and therefore stolen from the customer’s property so the customer would take the hit? If so this would be pretty miserable for the customer, particularly since deliveries are not always made when they are supposed to be made and the customer might not be in - ie. at what point does delvery count as being made ? I had one expensive item delivery arrive and the box was empty (there may have been a pen or some cheap item in it - I forget). Although I had ordered it for a specific event I had to wait weeks and weeks for Amazon to supply a replacement and I had to badger them to do so - the reason they gave me afterwards was that they always have to investigate such cases thoroughy. Since then I always make a video of my opening any expensive item just in case.
