I recommend cutting the directions off the package and putting it onto the container, as well as labeling the container in a couple different places, such as the top and the other side. This way if it's moved people will be able to see it easier, and if you're not around to cook the rice, the directions will be there to help those who do not know how to cook very well.

I had to come back and give a warning about storing any chocolate products - mice. For me the only safe ways to store any type of chocolate product is either in metal or glass. Since we no longer have a cat we regularly get mice in the basement. Those buggers LOVE chocolate. My first experience (other than chocolate chips out of a bag sitting on a shelf unprotected because we never had mice) was discovering they had eaten through a very thick plastic canister that had never been opened. Evidently they could smell the cocoa right through the plastic. I taped over the hole and kept that as my "mouse indicator" - if it was open again we definitely had mice back. Recently I discovered thick mylar doesn't work. I, sadly, discovered a 5 lb commercial bag of cocoa mix had been eaten into. Just now I discovered a commercial mylar 1 lb bag of cacao nibs is ruined. This bag was in a box of mixed products in mylar bags - the only thing touched. Now I will be sure ALL chocolate products are either stored in metal cans, metal file cabinet or glass containers - with lids firmly attached. I also put plastic sandwich bags over every single jar or can of product I put into the basement. No more ...ick.. on jar tops. --Jackie's Grandma

I lived in India with a local family for over a year. Each family would buy six months worth of rice at a time for the number of people in their families. They also believed that basmati rice was best if it was aged for a year. So, they always had about 18 months of rice per person. They had what looked like 50 gallon barrels, and the rice was stored in the barrels. So, a large family might have 10 of these barrels filled with rice at any given time. Oxygen absorbers were unknown at the time. They kept the bugs away from the rice by using whole cloves or bay leaves. As the rice was put into the barrels, every few inches, bay or neem leaves would be tossed in - not many, 2 or 3. Then the barrel was sealed. Cloves were used in the same way - a teaspoon of cloves tossed in every 3 or 4 inches of rice in these big 50 gallon barrels. The cloves and the bay leaves do perfume the rice to a certain extent, but not nearly as strong as one would think. Once you open your container of rice, you could put 2 bay leaves on the top when you close the bucket. Also, once I cooked some rice with a bay leave in it. I loved it and now I do it all the time. I can't really describe what it does for the rice, but it does a lot.
@Navajosun2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing that info. I’ve always had the suspicion when I saw how bags of rice were stored in other countries, that oxygen absorbers were not necessary.
@thehadster70432 жыл бұрын
@@Navajosun I'm sure that oxygen absorbers work better, but its nice to know about other methods. In India, the Neem tree is called the "medicine" tree. Neem leaves are placed in cabinets to deter bugs, and I've heard that bay leaves work as well.
@RoseRedHomestead2 жыл бұрын
It is nice to know about other methods. Scientific experiments have shown that bay leaves do not deter bugs, but we each need to make our own decisions of what we feel best about. Even being a scientist I know that science does not have all the answers! LOL!

Your curls just look adorable on you I hope you keep them…. Love your teaching and I am going to start my first canning with hamburger and sausage. I also have bought a dehydrator to make powder veggies, your soup jars was such a hit for me. Use pint size for me and quart size for family dinners once a week…. You are both so cute and love the way you are always saying now Jim how do i do this or that, so adorable..by the way I am 75 and just starting all this, so excited..

Yes, many share your wisdom. Whenever I watch a video on food preservation, I'll comment that You have proven scientifically, that their method is unsafe, always posting the link to your video. Just yesterday I referred others to your video about 'oven canning', trying to spare folks from useless or dangerous practices. Heartfelt thanks, lovely RoseRed, sending kind regards from Canada.

I always write the EXPIRATION DATE on the products. Not the date I buy it. So then I can rotate and know I need to use it fast as the dates gets closer. And also I use Mylar bags to keep insects out and whatever else .

The expiration date is already on the products so I don't re-write it. I want to know how long I have had it.

Hi kathy. I bought my buckets and gamma lids at Lowes but Home Depot has the, as well as amazon. Just be sure they are food safe.

Love your curls makes you look young and happy. WinCo is a win for me. Need some 2 gallon buckets. Do you ever vacuum seal rice in smaller quantities? Enjoy all your videos. Thanks

Love the curls! My hair was straight for years… then after a trip thru hell and chemo … it fell out… and when it came back in…. now it’s curly !! I used to pay big bucks for perms back in the day … way back…. Lol…. But now the curls are free… embrace the natural beauty of your curls … makes life simpler. I highly recommend the Wen hair care line… just the basics … keeps color and curl beautiful. Thanks for all you share/teach … always appreciated!

Pam, I thought Basmati rice didn't have a long shelf life? I have stayed with white rice, for this very reason :( But if you say it will last 10-15 years, this is my next purchase :) I just LOVE you guys' videos :) And it was fun with Jim, your Sissy, and her hubby too! Sounds like today you are feeling better, that was nice to hear. Have a great weekend!

White rice lasts nearly forever. Brown rice is the one with a short shelf life :)
@starrstylist74412 жыл бұрын
@@KellyS_77 Yes, I knew that, but I "thought" Basmati was included. TY for your reply :)

I believe she said that basmati rice usually has only a 1 year shelf life but with oxygen absorbers 2-3 years

Yo. I work in basmati rice imports. White basmati lasts for years and years just like any white rice when stored correctly. Older basmati is actually going to cook up better than new, as it will have a lower moisture content. The best basmati is aged at least a year before it goes to market.
