If a baking mix/pancake mix has baking powder already in it, you'll find it will not rise as the product ages. But, don't throw it away. When it comes time to use it, just add some fresh baking powder to it and it will work just fine. Just add enough for the size of the batch you are making. You can also make baking powder from baking soda & cream of tartar.

If I were you, AP, I would just keep making occasional videos just like this, because no matter how many of these types of videos with this same subject matter of yours I've watched, I ALWAYS learn a little something more. You are a very good teacher because not only do you provide very detailed instruction along with actually showing how you do something, but you elaborate on some very interesting and important facts in addition to the topic as well. Your channel is a very good resource because of this factor alone, let alone for other reasons, too. Thanks AP! Drummer Girl out.

When you open the pancake mix you may find it will not rise. The reason is, the baking powder can go flat. Baking powder has a short life time. I suggest storing baking soda and cream of tartar. 1 teaspoon of baking soda and 2 teaspoons of cream of tattar = 1 tablespoon baking soda. If you keep cream of tartar dry it will last for years.

Can you give us an idea of how much would be needed in order to make X amount of old pancake powder rise again??
@lindael2
@lindael2 2 жыл бұрын
@@gman21266 I have found when you try to add new baking powder it made the pancake have a strong taste of the baking powder. I found the same with biscuit mix. But I found I could use the pancake mix with white flour and it worked fine in bread. If you have white flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, lard, ghee, or shorting, and powdered eggs you do not need the biscuit or pancake mix. I suggest to people that they look for old cook books that have instructions for cooking from scratch.

But I got this gut feeling in my soul that something big is coming!! I don’t know what... But I’m concerned, not scared.. Pickup a extra bag of rice, extra can of chicken.... But what do I do for a type 1diabetic grandson who’s 4 yrs old and now has celiac disease???? He is so picky too!!! 9/11 brought everyone together but this has divided many!! Basics everyone should store: White flour, shorting powder, powder egg, sugar, beans, molasses, yeast (keep in freezer) baking soda, cream of tartar, corn meal, dry milk, oats, apple vinegar, white vinegar . If you have nothing else store those items. You can make white bread, oat bread, corn bread, biscuits, pancakes, baked beans, boiled beans add a little vanilla and you can bake a cake. To make life a little more pleasant add some jam, canned butter or butter powder and peanut butter powder. One more thing. Learn how to cook. : - ) .

For me, and this is purely theoretical, i've been too scared to try to seal my own food! but for me, I plan to seal foods i use, but don't use a ton, like pancake mix, I will probably seal those items in 1 gallon bags. (2.5 or 3 gallon would be better, i wonder if they exist?) Anyway, then i will store all those 1 gallon bags in the bucket. Then when i need one i can just pull out one and not have to worry about using it up in time.

I immediately vacuum seal my jars of unused 02s because some of their 'power' will be used up letting them seal the jar. By vacuum sealing it asap, you keep the maximum strength intact. While I too love the convenience of ground flour, even stored in mylar with 02s, white and AP flour have a maximum storage life of 5 years. It won't be a matter of insects or mold but rather developing a stale, almost bitter, taste. You just don't know under what conditions and how long the flour sat in the warehouse or store before purchase. Whole wheat flours, because they contain more natural oil in the wheat germ, have even shorter mylar life. So definitely store only in package sizes you can use within those times. Or, better still, store whole wheat berries which have storage life close to 30 years and grind as needed. You'll need a grinder but you'll also discover a much fresher tasting flour.

With the pancake mix and other mixes the baking powder in it will loose it's potency over time. If you keep baking soda and cream of tartar in your storage you can make your own baking powder to add to any mixes that have lost their poof. Take one part baking soda to 2 parts cream of tartar and you have baking powder. My understanding is that these 2 items when kept separately are shelf stable indefinitely.

I think space wise it may be better to stock up on flour rather than pasta and learn to make your own. Very easy and you will be surprised how good if you never had fresh pasta before. You need an egg or two and if I remember correctly, a little bit of oil. I might get some powdered eggs and experiment to see if it works as well with re-constituted eggs.

I spread dry bay leaf on the shelves of my pantry. I also put a couple of whole bay leaves in the containers that hold my pasta, rice, flour, pancake mix etc. The bay leaf will not effect the taste or smell of the product. Bay leafs are a deterrent to the bugs that plague our dry products in our home pantry. Once I heard about bay leafs effect on pantry and put this into practice, I’ve never had another problem with bugs in the last 5 years.

I love your channel. And I’m also Dominican. I didn’t even knew what prepping was 4 months ago. But thank God for channels like these. I follow catholic prophesy and after the fire from 2 days ago in Paris I know that the chastisement from God and the famous 3 days of darkness are not far. So according to the professors after the 3DD food will be scarce for 3 years. There will be a warning for 2 days of darkness before so make sure you have the items that you need to survive during that. I know to some people it may sound crazy specially for the non believers but we all feel deep inside that something is about to happen soon.

@@flordesakura it’s not an approved prophecy that’s why I haven’t done it but they mention it on the Countdown to the Kingdom website based on Luz de Maria. Hey AP! A good alternative is probably to use vinegar (instead of just a wet sponge) a lot of canners do this to clean their edge before putting the tops on their jars. It would definitely eliminate some of that chance for bacteria from the water. Maybe this isn't a good practice, if not and there is a reason please let me know!

We do not have a Cosco's near us... I did pick up several small pouches of pancake mix at the local store. For some reason, pancakes and pie crust are my only cooking failures. I can't think of anyone that I dislike enough to serve either of them to. My pancakes come out flatter than flat and my pie crust would choke a horse! I always wanted to go to a restaurant for pancakes, but I don't trust the kitchens here in Florida. Someday you may take the family to Florida on vacation and stop in to see Ma and make me some! Personally I would do smaller bags of pancake mix with oxygen absorber inside the bag then a large food storage tub with another oxygen absorber inside that for more long-term storage. Better would be to plan to use this and rotate your stock as flour, pancake mix xcetera will not last more than a few years. Stock and rotate. Great videos AP love how you share your knowledge.

@@liberty8424 yes it does but something like pancake mix won't because of the other ingredients. Years ago I bought 25 lb of flour, poured it into a food grade bucket with a twist lid 5 years later the flour had a nasty aftertaste. So now, I used smaller air tight bags to keep them for long term storage.

@MBG, No it was emptied into the buck with about 15 Bay Leavesand in a cool dark place. I also live in Wyoming where it's very arid, I don't know if that makes a difference or not but the bucket was sealed for 5yrs. I would like to try molar and the dry packing for when I open the buckets. I know in Kansas we would get leveled very easy and the Bay leaves helped but only lasted a couple of years there. I hope this helps. Kansas was 22yrs ago. We didn't have molar...

Awesome video AP. What a great way to store a lot of carbs. You can eat these with syrup, jelly or just plain. I have several buckets put up. After a while my mylar re-inflated and pushed the lids off my buckets lol. I just put a pin hole in them and put the lid back on. Some buckets did it and some didn't. I dunno. Hope all is well brother!!

Personally... I won't package anything in 5 gallon buckets. I'd rather use gallon and quart sizes. I'd much rather have a gallon or quart size package go bad for some reason then to lose a whole 5 gallon bucket of food. Plus, your not stuck eating the same thing all the time before it goes bad.

I packed 2 5 gallon buckets of flour over the weekend. Im planning on 1 more at least but i put packets of yeast in each bucket on top of the mylar bags and in one i filled 3/4 full in mylar w a thing of salt then sealed the whole thing. Trying to get everything in 1 bucket to open 1st then have all ingredients after i open that bucket 1st. Want to do pancake mix next but will mix some blueberry mix w the crusteaz bags to flavor since i got them on sale.

You can reseal the original plastic bag the oxygen absorbers came in & then they will not absorb so much oxygen that is in the mason jar. A hair flat iron works great to seal up the Mylar bags.

I have found that any packaging will only hold flour for 3 years tops. After that, it starts to smell off. Rotate and check your stores and reseal each year if you don't.

Hello Mayra, I've always had really good luck with the 2000cc o2 absorbers in my 5gal buckets so in the future in the case that I store things in smaller containers I will just go off of the 400cc per gallon that I have been successful using. God bless..

You can google the info, but this is what you need. 50cc for pint size jars 100cc for quart or mylar bags 200 for half gallon 400 for gallon Some things need a bit less because they are pretty solid when packed, without much air in them, but things like pasta or corn need these amounts because there is more air around them when packed, so better to go with these amounts.
