I already own the Osprey Porter 46 but I'm considering downsizing to the Patagonia Black Hole MLC 26 for shorter trips. But the Porter is the "bring it all" bag. Anything can fit in there.

Love the packing comparison vids. It's so helpful to see what these things actually hold relative to the others. I am really torn between the Tortuga Setout 35, Setout 45 and the Osprey Farpoint. I don't like how big the 45 is, but I like the idea of having extra room to bring back some souvenirs. I felt like the 35 might be too small, so was leaning towards the Farpoint as a nice middle ground (I just really hate the laptop placement in that bag), but now I see that it looks like the 35 might even fare better on the space side. As helpful as this was (and your other videos), I'm just to indecisive, so I'm sure I'll waffle back and forth a few more times before I pull the trigger on one of those three.
@OneBagTravels

Thanks J-rod! The Setout holds a lot for a 35L bag because of the open interior design. They're both great bags, but I really think the Setout does a better job with some features, like small item organization, laptop sleeve, and water bottle pocket. You can always buy both, test then out, and return the one you don't like. Both companies have great return policies as long as the bag is still new.

Never cared for the dead space at the bottom of the Farpoint until I started to put my smaller packing cube w/ socks and underwear down there. That looks very stuffed and you don't even have a spare pair of shoes in there :)

Those are the old style of Eagle Creek packing cubes, both Medium size. The black is regular and red is compression cube. The new styles (Isolate and Reveal) have similar sizes ~14"x10"x3" but a different look.

Thank you! I've been torn between Farpoint 40, Setout 35 and Setout Divide. This helped me narrow it down to the Tortuga options, as the Farpoint 40 doesn't seem to actually hold more. Well technically it does, but if it's just cramming something in that you can't access without completely unpacking how useful is it really? Have you tried the Setout Divide? when expanded it's 34L, and I'm wondering how much difference that 1 litre really makes. I think that it's versatility would allow me to use it on short work trips (3-4 days) and longer vacation travel (week abroad), but worry that it'll actually under-perform in both settings instead of working well enough in both.
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 3 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried the Setout Divide. The 1L is probably not noticable, but those packs will sit on your back different because the base dimensions are different. The Setout will have a larger footprint on your back, while the Divide will be smaller, with the extra volume coming from the expansion. So it will sit smaller on your back, but stick out more behind you. I think smaller expandable backpacks are a great option. I also have the older Tortuga Air pack, which is very similar to the current Setout Divide. It's 27L expandable to 35L. It's great for short trips in the smaller mode, but I can expand it for longer trips. I do think that you should pick the bag size that you will be using most often though. If you take mostly short trips, with an occasional long trip, the Divide will probably work. However if you are using the Divide in fully expanded mode for most of your trips, then it won't be as comfortable and you should just go with the regular Setout.

Great review...I am looking to purchase a back pack that can hold the items I need for a scuba trip. and cloths for a week..(minimum) what would you suggest. Which bag do you think would be best...I will be packing a 3 mil wet suit as well
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels Жыл бұрын
Are we talkig regulator, mask, snorkle, fins, as well as wet suit? That's going to be difficult to fit all of that in a carry on. I've done it with just a snorkle set, but for all that scuba gear you may need to check a bag. Other than that I would say get a pack with the largest interior volume you can, like a duffel bag.

Akona makes a great backpack for specifically for scuba gear! I have taken my whole kit in their carry on backpack (though not much else fits - worked fine for a warm climate dive trip though). I will warn you it gets really heavy.

What size cubes? For the main body? Also, the new garpoint does not have the front loading tablet pocket, so main body has more room, and laptop slides in through a side zip along the back

You don't really need packing cubes for the main body but if you did anything 12" wide or less would work.

Great comparison! Can you rank them based on comfort? I own the Farpoint 40l but hate the laptop placement and how difficult it can be to pack like you showed in the video but the comfort is excellent. Are the Allpa and Setout comparable in comfort fully packed?
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 3 жыл бұрын
Setout > Osprey > Cotopaxi Farpoint is comfortable, but laptop compartment is in a weird location and packing is awkward. Cotopaxi has great interior organization, but it's heavy and the fit isn't as adjustable as the others. Setout has good organization and the most comfortable carry, but it's a little heavier than the Farpoint.

@@OneBagTravels Thank you! Do you have any experience with the Aer Travel Pack 2 or Minaal Carry-on 2.0/3.0 compared to the Setout? (Comfort and function) I think I've narrowed it down to the Setout or one of those two bags
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 3 жыл бұрын
@@bladerealm124 I've also tested the Aer Travel Pack 2 and Minaal 2.0. I like all 3 of these packs, you can't go wrong with any of them. My thoughts: Aer is classic, solid, minimalist, travel pack with great construction and hardware. But it's heavy, water bottle pocket is small, and no water resistant coating. Minaal is also great, comes with a rain cover, I love the sleek look, but the packing style can be awkward. I haven't tested the 3.0 but changes appear to be minor. This is the best looking pack IMO, but the price is kind of high, $349?! Setout has the best backpack straps. Interior is large and easy to pack. Material is thinner than Aer and can look saggy if not fully packed, front pocket zipper is small and harder to see small items. Great price for the quality.
@bladerealm124
@bladerealm124 3 жыл бұрын
@@OneBagTravels Thanks for the info. The price is crazy on the Minaal 2.0/3.0 but I love the look and weight compared to other similar bags. I just saw your Minaal 2.0 video and Setout video. The Minaal does look harder to pack out but I think it's worth it for the slimmer profile. Do you have any experience with the Minaal Daily 2.0/3.0? I saw another youtuber who uses the Daily 3.0 as his packable bag laid flag in his Minaal Carry-on 3.0 and it seemed like a great daybag albeit heavier than an ultralight true packable bag
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 3 жыл бұрын
@@bladerealm124 I haven't tried the Minaal Daily, but I think it depends on what you're using it for. If you travel with a laptop and are staying in one place for a long time (ie digital nomad), a smaller daypack that also has a good laptop compartment is a good option. However if you're moving around a lot (trains, planes, bus) the combined weight (>5lbs) to haul both those bags around would be cumbersome. I usually don't travel with a laptop, so I tend to take a medium sized backpack and a smaller packable daypack.

I know right?! The full headphones are a little bulky so Iv'e been hesitant to get a pair, I know they would be amazing on airplanes/busses etc., but then they take up a lot of room in your pack when you're not using them. I recently bought a pair of Sony wf-1000xm4, the noise canceling ear buds. The sound quality is great and I'm surprised how well the noise cancelling works. Not as good as over the ear head phones I imagine, but they still block a lot of background noise.

I'm definitely pronouncing it wrong in this video, but are you sure it's Cotopa"H"i? I know there are multiple ways to pronounce the spanish X, like in the Yucatan it's pronounced "SH" or "CH" where in mainland Mexico it's pronounced more like a "H". I've never been to Equator so I don't know what the proper way to pronounce it there is, but this video from the folks at Cotopaxi suggests it's pronounced more like a "KS". kzbin.info/www/bejne/mmq9fJZpmMeof7M
