As we continue to prepare for the Tans America Trail in July, we pack our bags for our first overnight moto camping trip. We are using the Tusk Highland and Wolfman luggage systems and packing them with our camping gear, tools, cloths, and everything else we will need for moto camping. We load the bags onto our Honda CRF450L and CRF450RL and get them ready for a weekend of adventure touring throughout southern West Virginia.

Great video. It's amazing how much a person needs (and needs to spend) to get properly outfitted for an adventure like this, but it's no doubt worth it to have good quality gear when you're doing a big long distance adventure trip. And now you have those things for future trips too.

Thank you, it’s a lot of work preparing for a trip like the TAT, but it’s worth it

For my rotopax I drilled 2 holes (where they mount all the racks) in the fender and made a custom plate that bolts it directly to the fender. It's a round plate with a protruding slot that keeps the rotopax from moving. Just 2 long bolts holding it down. I didn't want a rack cause they're ugly and can break your leg if it falls on you. Good video.

Nelson Riggs and Tusk dry bags are much better then Wolfman bags. Used Wolfman one trip and bought Nelson Riggs dry bags and had NO PROBLEM since. Tusk Tank Bag and Tusk front fender tube and tool Bag holds both tire tools and both front and rear tubes, A nice fit on the front fender.Would you and your son want to get a small group and do the Idaho BCDR . I'm retired and looking to put together a trip out there. Trailer out and back. 8 to 10 days riding 1250 miles. Check out the RMATV ride they did looks pretty cool. Let me know. Planning on mostly camping and some motels if needed. Looks like two day ride out the and then 10 for bikes and two or three home. ,I'm leaving out of Little River ,SC on the coast. USMC V/V

Sleeping butts to nuts is a little weird. Get a couple small tents at REI. You will not regret it.

I like the looks of the Highland system. The Rack is probably a must. Curious why you didn't go with the IMS 4 gallon tank (might be 5 IDR)? Looks like a great system though!

I Like your videos! Concise, positive and informative. You might do a wrap up and it could possibly cover some of the anal/specific questions below… What was the weight of the bags and gear? What was total per bike? Any issues with subframe and/or subframe bolts? Now that you are done; are there items you would have brought and/or left behind? (Chair, separate tent, rear tube more water capacity, back up fire source, paper maps, baseball hat and possibly rain gear) In a later video you mentioned ditching backpacks, and tank bags. I whole heartily agree, but space becomes an issue. What was in those and where would you suggest putting those items?(front fender, tied to fork…) Looks like your bag system worked; did you at all consider Giant Loop Coyote bag or any other system besides the tusk. Maybe have highlights of favorite section(s), camping spots, good hotels, great restaurants, surprise encounters, things not to miss (and possibly areas/things to avoid) Consider posting map of the days ride and the whole ride (on the wrap up) as YOU did it. GPX tracks would be oh so nice😀 So, What’s next? Multiple bdrs or divide trail??? Thank you again for your time and enthusiasm. If you every make it to Colorado again be sure to hit me up.

Thanks for watching and for the feedback. We talked about doing more detailed videos, but just haven't had the time to put it all together yet. I will try to answer some of your questions: Not sure what the total weight was No issues with the subframe I think we had the right amount of gear, wouldn't change much The backpack was mainly for hydration, so if we ditched it we would have to come up with a way to carry water on the bike We looked at Giant Loop, I think they would work well also We lost a lot of our GPX files when we lost our phones Not sure what is next, we are currently getting ready for the upcoming GNCC race season. Thanks again for watching!

Good video how did that Highland fit because I have a Honda 300 L it’s probably may be a little smaller than your bike but I’m curious how it fit or if you think it might be too big for that bike

I didn’t like the highland much, I ended up selling it and going with the Wolfman like Jake has. The highland hung down too low and kept hitting my heels.

I love your videos! Very informative and entertaining too!! I remember you saying something (maybe when you were caught in the rain) that your son probably wished he had the Tusk system... I'm not sure why. I need to make a purchase and am torn between the Tusk Highland X2 and a Wolfman set up. When all is said and done, which one would you guys say you preferred? Need your expertise, please!

We both preferred the Wolfman. The Tusk was nice, but it hangs down too far for my liking and would hit my legs.

I had considered the pros and cons of tent verses hammock. Im leaning towards hammock. any thoughts on the tent or hammock if you did it again?

I personally prefer tent so you can seal it up and keep the bugs out. Also, I like to take a lightweight air mat to put under my sleeping bag

@billy, I just got a 2020 450L for TAT this summer. I am considering a luggage option and a gas can. Which one you recommended based on your experience?

For gas storage I used a Giant Loop 2 gallon fuel bag and Jake used a 2 gallon Rotopax. I really liked the fuel bag because you could roll it up and store it when not in use. It is more expensive than the Rotopax, but worth it in my opinion. We had a 3 gallon IMS tank, so there were only three or four days on the TAT that we needed to carry fuel.
