Every Dentist will have their own way they want the Dental Assistant to set up a tray for a procedure based on their preferred instruments and material. This video is meant only has a basic introduction to a "packing retraction cord". Many of the instruments or materials in this particular video may not be used by every dentist. It is only meant as an example.
The reason to pack retraction cord on a prepped tooth for a crown before the DDS takes the final impression is to push away the gum tissue away from the margins of the prep to get a good final impression to make the permanent crown.
