Fantastic. Two very different players making one of many superb connections in their careers. So blessed to have them and see things like this. Paco's right hand is pretty astute in a way that McLaughlin's isn't but man can John make a lot of music with that pick. True call and answer shredding with feeling as well as being played clean. Phenomenal musicians. Thanks for this!

Extraordinarios maestros; Paco con sus increíbles picados, y McLaughlin con la púa. Allí tenemos para escoger, Nada de esto podíamos ver hace 30 o 40 años porque no teníamos La Internet. De lo contrario no hubiésemos demorado tanto en adquirir destreza en la guitarra y nos hubiésemos librado de seguir a los pocos guitarristas que conocíamos en nuestro entorno y que no eran tan magníficos. Hace 30 años no se podía tocar la guitarra acústica con la púa porque enseguida era tildado de ""tocar como mandolina" y casi expulsado del círculo de guitarristas, como hereje. Ahora, vemos como McLaughlin intentó ya en los 70 de acortar el camino entre el estilo de mano abierta y el de púa.

Paco has great solos too. I play flamenco and it is more difficult to do complex strums with pick than hand; for that reason, I think Paco did more rhythms than solos on his tour with John. Nevertheless, both were a spectacular duo.

Muy bien. Extraordinario. Increible la perfeccion interpreetativa a la guitarra de estos. dos maestros. Pero el publico, me permito decir que no está a la altura de estos dos genios. Cuando hay pasajes tranquilos, estan callados pero despistados, no lo entienden. Solo entienden y se alborozan con los pasajes rapidos, escalas p'arriba y p'abajo a toa pastilla. Mismamente cuando Paco esta tocando su solo de buleria, ante publico la mayoria germano, a mi me parece que la cara de Paco esta diciendo: *Qué poco entendeis de esto* , porque no conocen la forma, el palo y se les escapan los finales y los principios del toque. En cuanto a la melopea final de Mc Laughlin, acompañandole Lucia, es una exhibicion inaguantable, pero que el publico se los come.... Yo tuve un profesor de guitarra en el Real Conservatorio de Madrid, D. Regino. Sainz de la Maza que cuando nos veia correr con afan de fardar, como en este concierto, nos paraba y nos decia: *¡ No, no... El virtuosismo es a la musica, lo que la beateria a la santidad...* Quiero decir que yo aqui, he oido mucha escala a mil nobis por minuto p'arriba y p'abajo y muy poca musica... Mas aún, de lo peorcito que oi a estos dos maestros, exceptuando la buleria de Paco. Por otra parte es inverosimill la paciencia del papel de Paco acompañando sumisamente las melopeas de Mc Laughlin... Tenia yo que haber conocido a Paco. (Fui profesor de Guitarra Moderna (jazz y bossa), en los Cursos del Festival Internacional de Guitarra en Cordoba), y haberle puesto al corriente de la tecnicas de improvisacion del jazz y sus armonias, para que consiguiera pensar y tocar en jazz y no depender tanto de Mc Laughlin, que lo explotó en su beneficio, porque Paco Lucia se rendia ante la gran sabiduria, ciertamente, de Mc Laughlin. como profesor de musica que fue y excepcional interprete. A Paco le faltaba, como a todos los guitarristas flamencos, el conocimiento de la Teoria de la Musica, para saber explicarse tecnicamente él mismo, lo que hacia, no solo por trasmision oral y a puro oido. Todavia los guitarristas flamencos, no estan convencidos de que tengan que pasar por el Conservatorio, sin abandonar su escuela autentica de famlia y de barrio. Con el jazz pasaba lo mismo. Todos eran autodidactas de oido , hasta que llegaron los años cuarenta, el be-bop y tuvieron que empezar a ir a las Music School, que comenzaron a proliferar porque el jazz habia evolucionado mucho y empezaba. a ser complicado si no te enterabas que era eso de la Teoria y el pentagrama. Hoy no hay musico de jazz que no haya pasado por una Music School. A los guitarristas flamencos les pasara igual, si quieren saber como funciona la Musica. No les sobra el aprendizaje suyo, por trasmmision oral y visual, pero les falta el aprendizaje tecnico de la Teoria de la Musica. En el video de Mc Laughlin y Paco de Lucia tocando ¡Anda Jaleo! doy algunas lecciones de Teoria Arnonica, ya absolutamente necesarias de conocer por los guitarristas flamencos, junto con un colega, A. Sebastian, que tambien estuvo de profesor en Córdoba. Aprovecharlo, enteraros y a ver si os. convence para corregir el error de no pasar por un Conservatorio. Os seguira sucediendo que os chuleen los anglos, en encuentros con ellos... Saludos afectuosos

Both are stunning players. However, my one and only complaint that I have is this... ...WHY IS PACO'S VOLUME ALWAYS LOWER THAN EVERYONE ELSE'S???? The difference is not massively huge. But it is just enough, to give those players with more volume, an advantage over the player who has less volume. The player with less volume has to physically play harder in order to be heard through the mix. In essence, he has to fight with his instrument. And, this is not the only concert that this happened. I've seen several videos of their concerts, and this issue where Paco's volume was lower is prevalent beyond belief. That also includes concerts with Al DiMeola and/or Larry Coryell, when playing with Paco and John as a Trio. Most of the time, Paco's volume was lower. WHAT'S UP WITH THAT? Was the soundman falling asleep? I realize that Paco's guitar was not equipped with a pickup, and all the other players had guitars that were. They used a combination of pickups and microphones. Paco only used a microphone. Nevertheless, a sound man's job is supposed to correct any difference in volume so that they all were at the same level. So, what happened? Also, didn't the players have stage monitors? Couldn't they themselves hear the difference in volume between the instruments? I cannot prove this but, as a purely acoustic player, perhaps Paco was unaware of this. Whereas the other players should have noticed it because of having experience playing electric guitar. The fact that this happened on several concerts leads me to wonder if there was another reason, beyond the possibility of the soundman falling asleep on every concert. Was it a preplanned way to make sure Paco didn't upstage anyone else? Since I'm a fan of all the players, not just as players, but as human beings, its very difficult for me to even embrace that notion. So, what's the answer? What happened? Does anyone know?

So I will say this: from around the 22:00 to 32:00 mark, the Florianopolis section is an absolute joy. Makes me want to dance and I am not a dancer. The marriage of these two virtuosos is explosive; I like Al Di Meola (and Larry Coryell, too) but sometimes just seeing these 2 in rare form in 1987 at their peak is perfect for me. Bravo gents!

Smokin! I always preferred Paco and John duets compared to Paco and Al. In my opinion, Al tries too hard with his solos...he’s no doubt a top shelf player, but I tire of his style rather quickly. John and Paco compliment one another’s playing much better. Just my opinion.
