Tying a Rice Lake 101 Chironomid Fly Pattern- Ep142 PF

I've been playing with this #chironomid #flypattter over the summer while in search of bluegill, rock bass, sunfish, and perch. It's gone through a few versions and this one has been performing quite well with the warm water species. I haven't tried it on lake dwelling trout yet, but I have my suspicions that it will also do well.
I used a speckled Flashabou on the fly to tone down the brightness and have been using both black and the gunmetal blue wire to segment the bodies. I occasionally use both colors on the same fly for a slight variation.
Rice Lake 101Fly Pattern Recipe
Hook: Scud hook like Firehole 315 #14-18
Bead: Brass or tungsten black nickel
Thread: Brown olive 8/0 (70d)
Rib: Gun Metal Blue Ultrawire
Body: 3-4 strands silver speckled Flashabou
Coating: Bone Dry U.V. & white paint

Chimo, cool bug dude... no fur allowed, lol. That speckled flashabou has been around for awhile right, or was it a "grizzly" type? I know I heard about it a long time ago then finally found some at Dick"s. Like most things I buy it got buried somewhere in the abyss. Anyway that's a nice design concept for a chironomid. I found that a white pearl color works great for sunnies and google eyes (rock bass). A dab of nail polish in that color may do well or some dyed over pearl flashabou in white, if it exists. I know white and silver crushes crappie and silver bass / white perch. Thanks for the heads up on the post :~) I only see it when I check email... I think. Cheers

Chimo Joe, sorry, I missed your comment here. I'm not sure how long the speckled Flashabou has been around, the grizzly barred stuff has been around a little longer I think. It really opens up the range of flash available. There is a Senyo product called Barred Predator Wrap that I had seen, but it is one a transparent media with black and colored bars I think. I haven't really seen it close up though. Tim from Tighlines had tied a steelhead fly with it a while back. Perhaps a Fall Favorite or something along that line. I don't think I've seen a white pearl, but a pearl with white thread might be a good analog for that effect. I was a little surprised how much the sunfish liked this style of fly. It almost feels like cheating. Cheers!

That's ok, I discovered my spam file so I thought maybe I was tagged or something - I still don't understand this stuff but I'm learning. Yeah I guess the speckled was first and grizzly later, according to a catalog I looked at. At first glance it's hard to figure out how some of these products are used, predator wrap is one, unless someone shows you. Thanks for the Tim F. tip. I really thought pearl white nail polish would be the ticket, don't know if it would have the "pearl" effect on a bead. Your flash & thread suggestion sounds great for a body. Well this pattern is on my to do list. Hey maybe bonding grains of rice to the fly and ... naw lol! cheers!
