Very nice, going to tie some up tonight. My grandson and I tie allot of zonkers and zonker variations. Seem to work well here in Western New York. But I really enjoy tying any kind of streamer.

Thanks Vincent. I too don't get many chances to fish these, but I really love tying them. You should give some of the bucktail streamers a go for NY, I think you'd do well. Cheers

Chimo! Freakin' awesome! Excellent pattern and tutorial, loaded with tips, techniques and your magical dubbing method. I read more about these flies then tie them so I really don't have a favorite. I have tied a Skykomish Sunrise with that red tubing with the floss inside that I entered in a contest, told you about it, we had a good discussion on filled tubing. I think I tied Horner's Shrimp but I found some cool silverish yarn and want to tie that again. I had a brainstorm on a flat wing Skunk using a unique variant cape I have and want to play with that. I guess all steelhead patterns are my favorites. Thanks for the fur balls, this one hit the spot! I almost missed this one, it never rang the bell, came in my mail. You must still be busy, no reply from the Rice Lake vid - another good pattern. Cheers...

Chimo Joe. I love tying steelhead but don't get out to fish them as often as I wish. Things are slowing down a little now and I've been able to take care of some of the house-cleaning tasks on my plate. I missed your last comment on the chironomid, oops. I hope that you get a chance to try out those patterns you have in mind. I'd like to see them sometime. Cheers

Hardy, I really love the Undertaker as well. I had a couple tied by Warren Duncan at one time. That guy could tie a beautiful hairwing. Cheers!

Mike, thanks for the comment. I started tying salmon and steelhead flies just for fun before ever thinking about fishing for them. Its a nice departure from the smaller trout stuff I started on. Cheers

Forgot to ask, where do you get those SuperFly hooks?
@PiscatorFlies
@PiscatorFlies 5 жыл бұрын
These hooks come from Superfly, a company here in Canada. They are phasing out their fly tying division though so they may be even harder to find soon. I really like Tiemco 7999 hooks as well and they are much easier to find. Cheers

Hey, I finally got around to partridge hunting and we got a few partridge a couple weeks ago. And I landed up plucking some of the feathers and now I have a ton of the tail feathers to tie pheasant tail nymphs and I also took a lot of wet fly hackle feathers. So I have enough of those to last me the rest of my life pretty much. Is there any good flies that use a lot of partridge feathers? Because I have a lot now. I know there’s the P-quad fly, which is the fly that gave me the idea to keep feathers for fly tying and I’ve also tied some nymphs with the tail feathers and even incorporated the tail feathers into my elk hair caddies flies.

Hi Matteo, glad to hear you got some feathers, I hope I helped. Check out Ralph's Fly Box here on youtube, specifically his Ruff Chuck, it uses ruffed grouse and woodchuck. He has many patterns using natural materials that look and fish great. Before you know it you'll be subbing your harvested feathers, fur and hair for lots of patterns. I know Piscator can provide many more patterns than I ever could. Good luck and have fun.

Matteo, thanks for the follow-up. I think you scored with that haul. I haven't tied too much with partridge tails, but I do like them for forming wing cases on mayfly nymphs. Did you get Gray or Chuckars? The grays a little nice IMHO for fly tying. The body plumage is perfect for tails and legs on nymphs and if you have some well-sized feathers for softhackles you're golden. If you have a look at the Nymph playlist, there should be quite a few patterns in there that use partridge. I'm sure you've done this already, but just remember that when you're harvesting wild materials, give them a freeze-thaw cycle a couple times to kill off any bugs/eggs. You don't want any unwanted feather eaters in the batch.

Piscator Flies I landed up getting gray and brown colored partridge. And I used a KZbin video that Joe Duca recommended to wash the feathers and so far I haven’t had any problems. Most of the feathers I got can be wrapped around the hook about 5-6 times. There are some other larger ones too. There’s also a type of feather that is long and relatively the same width all the way to the top, with white and brown colours on it that I only got 4 of them. They seem to be good for making dry flies and I’m not really sure where I got them off of the partridge but I think it was closer to the wings. If you know where those feathers are on the partridge it would be awesome if you’d let me know so I can get some more before hunting seasons over.

Joe Duca you definitely did help! I used the KZbin video you recommended to wash the feathers and after they dried, the are fluffy and good to use.
