Really enjoying your journey. Canadian here, and the reason you are not encountering people on the river is the country is large and the population relatively scarce. Especially in Saskatchewan
@WhatInTheWorld_Tom3 ай бұрын
Definitely. But I speak with many people along the way about it and even they they say "yes, it's extremely under utilized". They say most people drive further north to experience the rivers there instead of in their back yard. Also, a few people told me they don't use the North Saskatchewan due to fear.. since their youth, they were told "don't go near the river, or you will die". I heard the same thing from more than a few people. That's why I'm talking about it.. because locals aren't thinking about the North Saskatchewan River when they think about water sports 🙂
@FreddietheFly3 ай бұрын
@@WhatInTheWorld_Tom Definitely under utilized. I live in Edmonton and I rarely do anything around the river, other than walk through the river valley which is one of our most treasured areas. City people tend to go outside of Edmonton for water sports as there are many lakes around us. Reason being they want to get out of the city, so the river doesn't get much use. The fishing in the NSR is great though.
@devinbartley57683 ай бұрын
I've done some canoeing around Edmonton and the Canadian praries. On a hot weekend day around the cities you will see other people doing it, but the season is short, and most people dont do long trips because lets face it, battling headwinds, bad weather, and slow moving waters gets a bit tiring after a few days. But you have a point, Canadian rivers are underutilized. People spend time camping at campgrounds, or backpacking in the mountains. There was a time in Canada's history when most of the commerce happened on the rivers. Now that we have highways people would rather drive to the river and camp next to it and then drive home. That reminds me of the other hastle of canoe travel - vehicle shuttles. Its not always easy and requires a lot of driving to leave a vehicle at your take out point and then drive back to the put in. When you have a normal office job and maybe just a few days or a week of vacation all that driving and shuttling cuts into your enjoyment time.

The sound of the coyotes at the end must have given you an odd feeling. They don't really bother people, as they aren't nearly as big as wolves, but still something to be careful around. I ran into a coyote by the pond near my home a few years ago. I thought it was a stray dog at first, but as it ran past me within metres, I realised it was a coyote. It wanted nothing to do with me.

Hey Tom , next to Russia, Canada is the second-largest country in the world with a total area of 9,984,670 km2, including 891,163 km2 of freshwater and with a population of a little over 41 million and most of us live or close to big cities. When you enter our big cities, it will be like spending 30 days at sea then being overwhelmed. I can’t quite figure out why you are not catching any fish, maybe some of the experts can wade in and give you some tips. Safe journey best regards from Montreal.

Tom you say about why are there not more people using that river. You forget Canada has over 2 million lakes and then the rivers running into or out of those lakes on top of that number. 1 in 5 people in Canada own at least a 1 water recreational vehicle of some kind . So we are out there just not in that part of that river
@WhatInTheWorld_Tom3 ай бұрын
Hey Jim, that's my point actually 🙂 I am paddling on a main vein that is right on people's door steps. So it surprises me that people would prefer to drive elsewhere than ho for a little paddle on the Saskatchewan River. But it's not just my opinion, I met many people that said this river is extremely under utilized. I grew up in New Zealand, very close to the water. That is where we would spend our time, in the water near our house, because it was right in our back yard 😊 That's why I mention it in the videos, not due to a small population in a huge country. I even called ahead to campsites asking how good the access from the river is to their camp site (their campsite is right on the river). Their response was "I don't know, no one has ever asked that before". Which just shows how under utilized that beautiful river is 🙂 I hope that explains the angle of where those comments I make are coming from. Cheers Jim 🤙
