I once interviewed Pete St John for a newspaper, I asked him 'How do you write a song like Athenry? 'He replied, 'If I knew that I'd be knocking them out everyday!'. R.I.P. Pete x.

I'd have loved to have met him, even if he's still alive, I've only got a very finite chance now, same goes for any of The Dubliners to be honest, I met Sean Cannon in Birmingham and became completely star struck, I became stiff as a board, total brain meltdown 🤣 But there are a load of folk musicians and singers I'd love to have met

My grandmother, great grandparents andgreat uncle and aunts are all born from Athenry and buried in Athenry cemetery, I plan to join them one day and I’m in London, England, my heart ❤️ is there not here.

So true....my Dad grew up down the road from the Burkes in Athenry....this is a powerful song with plenty of memories of the bog road, Dad's bump, Cappomoyle, Newcastle Church, the pitch, the town of Athenry and it's amazingly loving and warm people ... Will always be powerful indeed!!! May Pete St John rest in peace.....

@@brendancurran2015 hi brendan...I live on that road and a half mile from cappamoyle...I know the currans well and knew the currans who have passed on as well....its a couple of minutes drive from me to their house and to newcastle school and chapel as well....

I think paddy is one of the best singers I've ever heard, and I am always listening to new sounds and songs, but paddies deep voice and super clear diction has not been equaled in my opinion. Brilliant.

He reminds me so much of my late grandfather. He was proud irishman who loved music and had a beautiful singing voice. Every time I hear Paddy Reilly sing this song it makes me feel closer to his memory.

No Irish roots whatsoever here, but Irish songs affect a great many of us the same way. They touch on universal feelings of longing for home and old simpler times and love and separation. God bless Ireland 🇮🇪

RIP Pete St John. A life well lived and songs well written. The Ferryman, Rare Oul Times and the Fields. As Phil Coulter said, 'we try to write one retirement song, Pete wrote three'. And fair play to ye Paddy and Glen, lovely tribute on the day. Ye've aged well, the pair of ye ;-)

I found this while looking up essentially the tempo to play the song on my own acoustic. Just to get others ideas. It’s the damn best thing I’ve found of anything on the internet in weeks.
