Thanks for sharing. Really useful improvement with the added benefit of an additional shelf below for tools to rest while in use.

Hey Paddy, nice job! Getting my Workmate425 in a couple of days. Like the idea of a rolling base and have seen a few videos on adding one, but like yourself, I think I'd also like mine to be a little higher. Looks like I'll be picking up a 2X6 sometime soon. I also like your design, in that it not only raises the bench top, but it adds weight and stability as well.

Like all woodworkers, it's strong enough to support the Queen Mary, the ship that is! I am fixing a workmate I found in the trash. I think the 2x4's are a little big for California. Lol

robert root I had a small ham radio station sitting on my workmate for months! I just got it back in the shop and used it on a project to build storage under the basement stairs. It really is a useful tool! Thanks for watching...

Hi Paddy nice project. Very useful. I've added a lower shelf to mine, still debating about the wheels, I have less space so it must 'disappear' better in my tiny workshop. All the best, Rob

Let me say "I love my workmates", I have many vintage models and always looking and finding cheap in garage sales. But I cherish those and have some knock-off versions that I use weekly and have accessories to make them more versatile thanks to youtube. But my question is why do folks make good solid rolling bases for their workmates but never add drawers for storage? Could this be a pulitzer prize winning breakthrough idea , or have I just had too much coffee this morning?

That is a very good question... And honestly, that thought never occurred to me! That's a great idea! In my new shop I am not using the rolling cart and will soon turn it into a base for a rolling heavy duty workbench.

I’m thinking you also could add a second smaller frame (kinda like a 1” high picture frame). on the top of the base so that you can use your Workmate with the legs folded for a 2nd height option.

That's a good thought. Here in the new workshop I don't have a lot of floor space so I haven't even been using this rolling base. I like your idea, though... hmmm... Thanks for watching and commenting!

Hi, where do I find part number for workmate 550 ? I need a locking leg latch but no part number available for this model. Is this model the same as Workmate 425 type 3?

Stan Avezov I do not know if these guys have the part you are looking for but here is a link that might help... www.ereplacementparts.com/baghardware-p-95677.html. Do some searches on their web site. Thanks for watching!

Yes i like it Paddy, but did you not think if you are exerting pressure from side to side, such as planning, your Workmate is going to slide away from you on it`s wheels.

Nice looking platform, and love the portability. Do you feel that the Workmate (125-300 lbs) is strong enough and large enough to hold a 8" drill press, or the Keter folding compact workbench sawhorse??

Kelley the Workmate is pretty tough but in the last few years mine has gotten a little sloppy in the joints. I would not trust my drill press on it.

You could have painted the 2x6's before installing the plywood. Skip the tape.

Nope no glue. I didn't know if I would keep it on wheels so I didn't use any glue. Thanks for the comment!

Why do the Americans always have to have everything over engineered and over size? 2x6 is far too big and heavy for such a platform and that's without the thicker ply base. What do you intend to do on the workmate? Build a ship? You don't need a platform stronger than the workmate top! The disappointing bit is, after all that, the corner blocks are mounted in the weaker position of shelf like, as opposed to the more rigid top to bottom!

I believe that part of his reasoning for the 2x6 (rather than 2x4) was to add some mass to the base to make it more stable. Or maybe that's what he had on hand... I often look around my scrap wood and use what I already have rather than buying something new... Just sayin' I thought it a rather nice (and simple) build. I have a COUPLE of old Work Mates, so... guess what?

@@Greek2Me64 The reason for the 2x6's was explained in the video. He wanted a taller workmate.
