My god. These guys and Andreas Oberg are really writing a whole new book on modern gypsy style Jazz guitar. All of us Stateside play a much different style, and its natural for us to envy this kind of skill and dedication. Very little Blues in this, and that's the main difference between American and European Jazz, in my opinion. All the same, beautiful!

I never thought anybody would top George Benson when it comes to solos on the jazz box; but along came Bireli Lagrene and - in addition to being a gypsy style virtuoso, Jaco Pastorius-like bass player, violin maestro, he's the freakin king of the jazz cats too..

Bireli and Sylvain are among the world's most skilled jazz guitarists. They are both in a class of their own. These two can run circles around any of the greats. Yeah, skill doesn't always equate with greatness, but they'd be my first picks for sure. Monster chops. Actually, "Monster chops" doesn't even begin to describe them adequately. Let's try "A-vicious-fight-to-the-death-between-Godzilla-and-Mothra-over-the-burning-streets-of-Tokyo-chops." Yeah.

Ahhh youtube, the place where guitarists endlessly argue about whether or not X is better than Y and Y better than X, even though in the end X and Y and both incredible guitarists and respect each other in the real world. I always breathe a sigh of relieve when the uploader turns off comments.

"and" they can play pretty much any style, and that includes rock. have you heard of that session in Montreux where Birelli sat in to replace Gary Moore in BBM (in the style of Cream) with Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce; i wonder if this is available anywhere...I remember meeting this gypsy trying to inquire for a vintage Strat for a Birelli who didn't dare to come in person, being endorsed by Yamaha at the time...

Luc's guitar has a nasal sound that I don't like, but he plays wonderful, of course. Bireli's Gibson sounds amazing. They are both awesome players, an absolute reference in guitar world. BTW we don't know who's the bass player, and he's also great.

i'm pretty sure both pat metheny and kurt rosenwinkel have a lot of respect for both these guys. and i'm pretty sure that vice versa these guys agree that they're totally not 100 times better than the other guys. long story short: stupid discussion.

Those pickups on Sylvain's guitar are hideous. And you guys are having a lame discussion. They're all great guitarist that have contributed greatly to music. I prefer Kurt over everyone, but that doesn't mean he's better than everyone else mentioned. Everyone is an individual and unique, and it shows in their music. Just because you like one guitarist more than the other doesn't mean everyone else is shit. Jeez, I bet this an all male discussion too, it wouldn't surprise me.

when a bass player can't solo, it's better for him not to solo..
@eckmeister82629 жыл бұрын
To Marie Salas- Your idol Kurt Rosenwinkel, would shit in his pants if he had to take a solo after one of these guys. Not only would he fail to keep up at this speed, but he would be so far out of his element as to even sound like an amateur in this context. Don't get me wrong. I don't think Kurt is a bad guitar player by any means. It's just that Bireli and Sylvain are dimensions away technique wise, and chops wise.Poor Kurt wouldn't stand a chance. Any truly insightful and capable guitar player can easily see this.
@sammerlott10078 жыл бұрын
I have to agree with eck meister here. These guys are on a totally different level of playing. I love Kurt,i own all of his cd's and saw him perform live a couple of times. I even had the chance to talk to him once and he admitted to me that he would feel like an infant having to take a solo after one of these guys. Bireli and sylvain are in a class by themselves,this should be obvious to any musician with knowledge and ears.There are only 2 reasons why someone would not accept the mastery that these guys have achieved- One would be ignorance, and the other one would be jealousy.
