Paganini - Balleto Campestre - Variations on a comic theme for violin and orchestra

The Balletto Càmpestre Variations starts off with a grand theme that sounds like music straight out of Paganini's concertos. Suddenly the theme collapses and lapses into a whimsical tune that is subjected to the variations treatment lasting an astonishing 27 minutes, but it is fascinating to hear Paganini twist the theme in ingenious ways and exploit every technical trick the violin is capable of at the same time. In the 27 variations you will find the most amazing display of flying staccatos and doublestops.

I have listened to this many times, and am convinced that this is the greatest violin piece ever composed. Who better to play it than Salvatore Accardo. His playing is so magical. Just outstanding if I may say so. Paganini would have been very, very proud. All I know is, it can't get any better than this. Thank you so much for uploading this. I love this piece immensely.

According to the book I have "Paganini: The Genoese Volume II" written by G.I.C. de Courcy, this piece was written in 1838, less than two years before Paganini's death. He was in Paris at the time and had just been involved in a disastrous business deal taking shares in a Casino called "Casino Paganini." The Parisian authorities ordered the Casino to be closed and he had to move out. They also slapped him with heavy fines for challenging their decision in court in an attempt to get out of the original lower level fines given to him. A letter from Paganini to his friend Luigi Germi says: July 11, 1838 "It will not seem strange to you that I drew a sight draft on Signor Migone some days ago for three thousand francs; please advise him that we will receive another for two thousand francs because I'm going to reopen my account with Baron Rothschild. I've just composed two grandiossissime sonatas with variations and I'm now composing a third. Then I have to orchestrate them. I must also orchestrate the grandiose concerto with the bell. True, I'm giving no concerts, but these compositions will do me credit and will bring in some money." In the footnotes, it reads that the following pieces found among his manuscripts at the time were most likely to be the ones discussed in the above letter, "Sonata Varsavia," "La Primavera," and "Balletto Campestre."

Paganini is the most underrated composer ever. Take this masterpiece for example, is so joyfull, so melodic, i could easily say that is nothing better than it, even by the golden trio of all times, Mozart, Beethoven and Bach

Accardo genio assoluto del violino. Quando lo ascoltavo nei vari teatri italiani , parlo di circa 40 anni fa, aveva il doppio del suono di quasi chiunque, e molto molto più bello. Parlo di oistrac stern kogan tretiakov ricci perlman . S.olo la bellezza di ughi ci stava accanto.

sorry, but Salvatore plays sometimes with a bad intonation. Like in the video, where he plays " Nel cor più........" in a private looking environement. He was normanally much better. Look at his discs of the 6 violin concerti !

That painting depicts very poor violin playing position. He's slouching his back and his left hand holding the violin, and his bow holding arm shouldn't be at a 90° angle to his bow. Though, I'm sure Nicolo Paganini never actually held his violin like that.

No, this is how he actually held it, if you read his diary he hints about the perfect way to hold the violin ( and it makes it easier to do tenths, third runs, high g string notes and double stop harmonics etc) If you look at paintings and portraits of the Master during the time he always holds the violin down on an angle, it eliminates the need for shifting, also the F holes are pointed to the audience which provides better amplification. It is far easier on the body and improves finger strength stability and independence as well. But don't take my word for it. yes, he did. on all the pictures which show him playing he has the same position. that was the way tartini used to play. and paganini refused when somebody told him to change the position. because he preferred this position to reach high notes easier, as at his time the habit to hold the violin was almost the position of nowadays. kreutzer, rode, lafont, spohr etc.
