This is my Pageboy flying with a tiny Cox TD .010 engine. This plane was designed by Ken Willard in 1962 and it was officially the "smallest RC plane in the world" at that time. Originally flown with an escapement control on the rudder only, mine has modern radio equipment with full rudder and elevator controls.

In my opinion, the TD .010 and .020 are some of the neatest little engines ever produced. They're so small that's it's a wonder they run at all, but run they do! I don't find them temperamental to start once you learn what they like. As you can see in my videos, they start rather easily most of the time. It helps to hold your finger over the intake while flipping the prop thru to pull fuel to the venturi. Then add a drop of fuel to the exhaust port, apply the battery, and flip to start.

Good to see these older designs still flown! Thanks for sharing. That .010 is surprisingly powerful for its size.

The .010s are a lot of fun to run and fly! I sold this plane earlier this year and look forward to building another .010-powered model.

I have several .010 engines that I have used on Ebenezer free flights, after seeing your video, I may just build the Lightning Bug from Model Airplane News plans that I have saved all these years! Thanks again for sharing! Your Pageboy reminds me of the Rascal R/c I had years ago with the Canon R/c system..

Another thing that's important is to make sure EVERYTHING is clean including the tiny fuel passage to the venturi. If there's a tiny bit too much fuel in the cylinder, it will flood. Not a problem. Just keep flipping until it clears out. If the needle is set correctly, it will eventually pop, then it will attempt to run a bit longer with each attempt until the perfect fuel/air mix is achieved.

Thanks, ab4op. I brushed on several thinned(50/50) coats of Sig butyrate dope to seal the wood, sanding lightly between each coat. The color accents are Coverite Microlite iron-on film. I then topped everything with a light coat or two of Top Flite Lustrekote clear for more fuel proofing. So far, so good. My battery pack is a 160mah 4.8V NiMH pack from Radical RC. I use their packs in most of my Cox powered planes. Good luck with your model!

I notice you are able to start the Cox.010 quite easily. I've never owned one but I had always heard that the .010 and the .020 were temperamental and hard to start.

Great Video. Thanks for sharing your efforts with small engines. My young son designed and built the 'CrapStik' that is on our channel here, but he was a kid experimenting with no help. just one or two decent flights because of high wing loading. Hormones have since ruined his modeling….

Thanks. I watched your CrapStik vids. Enjoyed them. That little plane would haul with a TD .020. Maybe the hormones will settle someday and his passion for modeling will return.

Those would scream!!! Just a question? What model’s were they usually used on during the days they were easily available? Especially before micro RC equipment?
@TeeBeeZee
@TeeBeeZee 5 жыл бұрын
That's a loaded question! The TD .010 was designed as a free-flight engine to begin with since the radio gear of the time was large, crude, and heavy. This airplane design, though, was created as an RC plane specifically for the TD .010 to show what could be done with it and to show how small a RC plane could be built at the time. It used an escapement control on the rudder. Mine, of course, was built with modern radio gear and 2 servos.

Wow, started on the first try. And smooth, no high compression gnarliness. What brand and nitro content fuel were you using? Also, did you reduce the compression with a few extra gaskets?
@TeeBeeZee
@TeeBeeZee 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks. The engine is stock with no extra gaskets. I use the same fuel for all my Cox engines. Sig Champion 25% with 1.5oz extra Klotz castor oil added to each quart. This mix has served me well for years.

Great video. I'm building one for my Cox .010 , What did you use for the fuel proof finish on your plane ? It don't look like Iron on film. I was thinking about doping mine and was wondering if it would make it too heavy with extra weight of two servos installed. Also, what battery pack are you using for the receiver? Thanks for the info

Hello , I ask ; onboard battery that uses the model for the power supply RC ?? Thanks .
@TeeBeeZee
@TeeBeeZee 8 жыл бұрын
+MauricioB71 The receiver battery is a 160mah 4.8V NiMH. I don't think they are made any longer in that small size. For applications this small, others have been using very small 2S lipos with a voltage regulator but I don't have any experience with that at this time.
