Interesting take but I personally feel that Pagliacci is an opera which explains itself. It's interesting to see how you're able to relate issues very much present in our world to the opera to make it seem all the more relevant but I feel that Pagliacci's place in the repertoire is untouchable as long as opera still exists. For just one hour, there is so much drama and emotion tightly packed in it that it explodes in its finale. This is verismo at its finest, period. In a great performance such as Franco Corelli's which was what attracted to opera, the emotions are very raw and their intensity becomes feverish. Only when a person in the audience has no heart can he find himself on his feet when faced with a dramatic tsunami like that.

Hey, Avi. Concerning Pagliacci, did you know that there's a debate between scholars concerning who recites the final line (La commedia e finita!) in the opera. In the original libretto Tonio recites it, but in many productions , it is Canio who recite it. Which of the two should say the final line, Canio or Tonio? And many thanks.

That's a great question... I kinda like that it's Canid actually cause he brings the show to a close. But on the other hand if Tonio says it it's like he has narrated the whole play for us... which would completely change the prologue... that's a great debate!

This is all nice and true, I just can't stand these characters, which is a problem in a story starting with a plea for my sympathy. :-D

I hear you! but that is a lesson in life I guess finding sympathy for people you don't really like, or who all are obviously flawed. I do agree with you. it's very hard
