Note: For decades I thought "A ventitre ore" in fact meant 11:00pm and found it odd that 19th century rural townsfolk and farmers would go see a play at 11:00pm and come home at 1:00am. There was no artificial light then except for torches. There had to be another explanation. It's a Farmer's way of telling time. They weren't tied to "clock time." Day and night were defined by sunrise and sunset, not 1200 am. Ergo, "a ventitre ore/the 23rd hour" means One hour before sunset. Factor in maybe 45 mins for Civil Twilight at that latitude there's enough time for a short, light comedy and a walk or buggy ride home before it's really dark. Also, I think they planned these shows for a full moon. They knew people needed moonlight to get home. So, moonrise/moonset drove when the show would be in town. The weeks with no moonlight were for rest, rehearsal, and travel.

Wow! thank you! that's really interesting and I did not know that. it does make more sense that it would be an hour before sunset but how did they roughly know what time that was?? more questions... I am definitely going to read more about this.

@@VivsGreen Ha ha. Sunset/sunrise have been known and calculated since the Ancient Egyptians. But farmers know the intricasies of their environment just by observing the natural patterns of things. And in farming everything is timed to the sun and the seasons. SECOND POINT: 11:00 pm does make some sense. August in Calabria is HOT!" Most annoying bugs only bite at sunset+a few hours then they go away. So, it's not so hot and less buggy. That's what I went around thinking for 30 years. But it still seemed too late for people anywhere in the 19th century to be out at a show. I ran across the explanation in a book about opera many yrs ago addressing exactly the "Ventitre ore" line in Pagliacci

Maybe for a Christmas special you should sing the song "Silent Night" in all the languages you've sung operas in. It's one of the most "operatic" carols out there.

I just finished watching the 2015 Royal Opera House production that modernized the setting. It did some weird stuff with the Play within the Play in the second act but I found it enthralling and I may use the combination of Cav and Pag to introduce a friend to Opera. I loved both of these operas.

I was going to give clarification on the "ventitre ore" thing, but I see this has already been done. For this Halloween, I'm planning to dress up as Paganini and watch a production of Gounod's Faust online while eating candy corn. Great video, btw!

Thank you. My mom always played a song called "The greatest performance of my life" Sung by Nancy Wilson. She flew to visit me this labor day weekend. And we were listening to Nancy. As always. I am legally antique and have just recently truly giving myself to Opera. No I'm sorry I truly give It up to myself, truly accepted opera? Anyway I want to speak one language so thank God there are subtitles and I am looking forward to going to Atlanta soon to see my first live Opera. You are hilarious and I appreciate your review. I think after I learn more about it I'll probably be able to come back and watch this again and enjoy even more. Something about you being sad when you put on the makeup for about you applying the makeup and being sad at that particular point. In my view of Pagliacci, the ending is like Ragnarök (The final destiny of the Norse Gods), and I have paired it with Fokine's choreography for the Ballets Russes version of Rimsky-korsakov's Scheherazade.
