Don't know the play well, but knowing some of victorian era paris it probably comes from her little-ness, or like a cute nickname. Mimi is like to do more with a character trait rather name, most latin/romance cultures do this, where english culture for some reason just does name abbreviations.

It's a reference to "Rent" the musical which is basically La Boheme reinterpreted for the 90s (tb is now AIDs) the song has the female asking the lead to "light her candle"

ummm... yes you can they are online and very accessible! 2017 Avi also watched a huge amount of opera online. Covid-19 just heightened its accessibility :)
