Is it bad that I (as an American) watch these videos purely to watch John get roasted? It would be cool to see a video about towns that are pronounced WAY differently than what you read. I know the UK has a bunch, like Leicester, Derbyshire, etc., but the US has a lot too. My home state, Ohio, has several (I would love to go over them!), as does my mom's home state, West Virginia.

The Boss Level is usually the final level in the game. Because most games slowly raise the difficulty, the last level is usually also the most difficult one. Also, in some games, it can also be the most interesting level. So "Boss Level" in other contexts usually means the best, or the highest praise.

Butt of the joke also has a side meaning of mocking or teasing. Originally it referred to an archery butt, or target. Boss level refers to the final level of a game where all of your learned skills will be needed to defeat the hardest opponent. In slang I think it refers to someone skilled, bringing their best to a serious challenge or discussion. Big time.

i am part filipino part english background - born in italy - lived in England as a kid/teen, also lived in Minnesota (Duluth) and Tampa FL, and settled down in Seattle, WA (USA). i like being able to use all sorts of international slang. my slang i like to incorporate into my current lingo is English slang and more recently Australian slang like "Fair Dinkum"

You guys do a really good job; it would be cool to hear more of the sayings that don't really mean what they say :-). All these videos are so helpful for people who are studying English. Of course, I am totally partial to John (Hi, son :-D) . In the 60's, boss meant about the same thing; something was really cool, awesome....boss, man. The use of "I'm dead" (at least in the U.S) can mean "I'm really tired" like "dead tired". Or "I"m in big trouble". As in, you really goofed up at work, your boss now wants to see you and you might say, "Oh, I'm dead".

I feel in the UK "colourful" can also be used as a bit of an insult/euphemism. For example at work if you were to say a colleague's language in a presentation/meeting was "rather colourful" you might be suggesting it was unprofessional or inappropriate to the setting. You might also say that someone was "very colourful" to mean they were loud/boistrous - again suggesting perhaps acting inappropriately in perhaps a more somber/quiet setting.

In the US as well. Colourful/colorful language means creative, but if you say someone is "colourful" it is kind of a nice insult.... They are kind of weird/out-there/loud.

I enjoy videos like these because as a native English speaker it helps remind me of phrases or words we use within certain contexts that differ from their dictionary meanings. This is helpful for 1) when speaking with others whose native language is not English (at my job there are many languages spoken natively: English, Spanish [many different dialects of Spanish], Marshallese, Korean, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Thai, Samoan, etc...as the majority of employees speak English, Spanish, or Marshallese the signs throughout the facilities are in these three languages) 2) for when learning another language so that you don’t literally translate them and also so you remember that other languages have similar words and phrases that are used differently from the dictionary meaning within certain contexts and 3) when someone whose native language is not English and they translate an expression or slang from their language into English you can remember to try to deduce meaning via context. I’d say I definitely experience all three regularly. When at work and have conversations with coworkers. When going to the Hindu temple where there are people whose native language is Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Gujarati, Bengali, Nepalese, etc (I’m a practicing Hindu). When helping my niece with her Spanish homework. When chatting with my friends and family who speak French. When listening to music like kpop, jpop, arab-pop, euro-pop (non-English), etc music. When interacting with Native American (Amerind) friends who have parents or grandparents whose first language is that of their tribe and so have expressions in English used amongst their family or other tribal folks that are derived from the tribal languages and thus not commonly used beyond the family or tribe (as my paternal great grandmother was Blackfoot and her native language was Blackfoot and she also spoke Kiowa, Comanche, Choctaw, and Chickasaw along with English I discovered as a kid when starting school that there were expressions that were unique to my family, though I now have Chickasaw, Choctaw, and Kiowa friends where I’ve heard some of those said when visiting them and their family and now at least know where some of those expressions come from). Great video! I definitely liked, am subscribed, and have the notification bell icon pressed so I don’t miss your videos. I don’t always comment, but that’s just because I don’t always immediately think of something to say because I’m still digesting the knowledge you all shared in that video. If I think of anything later on, that’s when I come back and leave a comment (though I suppose I could learn to leave shorter comments!) Keep up the great work!!!!

As an English speaker, I’ve really taken for granted figurative nature of some words. Homonyms is the other. Many sarcastic, dry humour rely on these a lot. Especially in word plays relying on the double or multiple meanings of words based on context.

My former boss had a colleague who used lots of four-letter words. She used to jokingly describe his language as "colorful." It wasn't so much that his foul language was diverse or interesting (it was neither), but more that given the professional setting, his using swear words at all was unusual. I feel like "colorful" can really be just a euphemism for using swear words. His swear words gave "color" to his language.
