On heritage day, people often wear their traditional clothing, my family and I went to the mall on heritage day and although we were just wearing our everyday clothes, there were alot of women wearing their traditional African clothing

She forgot to mention that . O cultural day you were ur traditional clothing the whole day . So ur indians wear indian clothing The different tribes wear their traditional clothing . And in some schools we even play indigenous games during this day

So, as it turns out, Groundhog's Day has its roots in Christianity. The original German superstition is that if the weather is clear on Candlemas (a Christian holiday related to Jesus's last feast or something), the winter will last longer than if the weather is cloudy. Germans were then like, "Well, how do we know if it's too cloudy or not?" So they decided if the weather is clear enough for a badger to see its shadow and get scared, then it's clear enough to produce a longer winter. And then they brought that tradition here to States and it turned from a badger into a groundhog (presumably because groundhogs are more common in the area? I don't know why it changed).

Oh so it did start over there! I couldn't find the actual origins past the Pennsylvania Dutch (granted I didn't devote too much time to research the history aspect)

Originally, it was a bear but, when bears became scarce, they chose a badger. Why they chose a groundhog is unknown because badgers are native to most of Pennsylvania.

Did not expect John to pick Groundhogs Day. Lol. I thought before watching the video he would talk about either Independence Day, just to poke fun at Sam, or Thanksgiving. Two very popular holidays here in the States, but guess the lesser know and celebrated day made the video funny with his explanation and the reactions.

I assume you referring to the British enclave in Cape Town, as I hardly think Afrikaaners and Black South Africans would celebrate the occasion. Perhaps this is a local event, as I lived in Durban (in Kwa-Zulu Natal now), another enclave, for fourteen years as a boy and never experienced the practice.

Guy Fawkes used to be celebrated all over SA, but with the stricter laws on fireworks the popularity has diminished quite a lot. It used to be one of 2 days where you were allowed to go nuts with fireworks (the other of course being Newyears). We used to celebrate it because of something that happened during the second Anglo-Boer war.

Guy Fawkes is all over Cape Town. Its not what it use to be nowwith stricter laws on fireworks but the enforcements have given designated areas to use for fireworks

We celebrate Nowruz (first day of spring and Persian year). We prepare seven fruits which start with "Sean", a Persian letter that gives S sound , and we visit our friends and relatives specially our elders like grandparents. Nowruz has a history of 5000 years and is celebrated here in Afghanistan, Iran, Tajikistan, and in some parts of Uzbekistan, China, Pakistan, India, Turkey, and Azerbaijan.

And also Kurdish people have it as well but it's I little bit different But what we do on the first day of spring when Newroz goes out for a picnic and newroz in Kurdish meaning (new +rozh) =(new day) as a frist day of spring and we wear our traditional cloths as well 🌄

I like the videos. Thank you for them. The Groundhog explanation kinda makes it sound like we all party - only that city parties. The rest of us glance at the news headline about it - just a silly tradition that no one believes is accurate (unless you're 5). St. Patrick's day is an good example because the Irish didn't celebrate it until recently and more Mericans celebrate it. We dye our rivers green and drink green beer.

What is strange about Groundhogs Day is that even though it is very localized, EVERYONE knows about the holiday. Non-commercialized holidays are becoming rare in the US

So, growing up in Israel as a secular Jew, one of my favorite holidays was Yom Kippur. Now, Yom Kippur is a very serious and grave holiday for religious Jews--you fast for 24 hours, avoiding food, water, and anything that could be considered work, contemplating your sins, praying and performing rites. In the 10 days leading up to Yom Kippur, you're supposed to reach out to people you've wronged. It's very heavy. But for the many, many secular Jews in Israel, it's something quite different. Since driving is forbidden, and schools are closed, children can run into the streets without danger of getting run over. The streets become filled with kids on bikes and skates, or just walking and running around. Families take walks--in the middle of the street--and go visit friends. It's actually a very joyous occasion for those of us who aren't religious.

I'm an American, reform but barely practicing jew and Yom Kippur mostly consists of my mother calling to ask what were doing and tell me its coming up and then me feeling guilty for not doing anything to observe it. 🙈

I haven't seen anyone in the US mention Cinco de Mayo yet. It is celebrated more in the US than in Mexico and is pretty much just an excuse to drink margaritas and eat tacos. John's choice of groundhogs day was great! Lots of people are suggesting independence say or Thanksgiving but those are both nationally recognized.

I think we call it braai day because braai is something that brings us all together regardless of race, religion or gender. So yeah that, and probably rugby, is what brings us all together.

I demand an explanation sir 😆 oh Sam :) this was definitely interesting. I knew about white day from dramas and anime. Groundhogs day of course most Americans know this. Though I'm pretty sure groundhogs can't see. The other two are definitely interesting. Celebrating somebody's failed attempt to blow up Parliament rather odd. Heritage day sounds really cool. It would be interesting if 🇺🇸 had something like that.

I don’t know about other states in the U.S but the state I live in my city we do the Octoberfest, which is a German holiday, to celebrate the founding my town, Stuttgart, and our German heritage. The whole town gets together have big lunch, drinks, and just hangout with family and friends. Heritage Day is may not be national holiday, but some town or states may celebrate their own little heritage day amongst themselves.

Groundhogs can absolutely see. They're basically like beavers except they live in holes in the ground vs. underwater dams. I believe you're thinking of moles (which are much smaller and can't see).

Yeh, we even make fake versions of guy fawkes out of straw and burn them on the bonfire. The tradition started as a form of protestant propaganda as the attempt to kill James I was a catholic plot. Guy Fawkes wasn't even the leader, he was just the explosives expert. He was tortured on the rack then hanged drawn and quartered. Its rather gruesome really. 😂

@@Anna-ou7or ....You're probably too young to remember this, but at one time on every corner children would make a stuffed representation of Fawkes and ask for 'a penny for the Guy'. Of course this was the old penny and had a small but still useful value. That whole tradition is now sadly gone completely.

Groundhog Day is one of my favorite movies. Groundhog day (the event) actually came from Candlemas day which the Romans brought to Germany, who brought it to Pennsylvania long ago, and it was said that if the sun was shining on Candlemas day (Feb 2nd), casting a shadow, that there was more winter coming, but if it was cloudy then the worst of winter was over. Which doesn't make much sense. Punxsutawney Phil has been "predicting" the weather since 1887, but historically he has only been about 39% accurate, and less in recent years. Which is less accurate than flipping a coin (50%). But it goes to show you how much people like to get together, party, drink, and celebrate! Cheers!

Speaking of holidays, the city where I'm at cancelled its annual celebration due to the COVID-19. It's so sad but understandable. But what's fun is that we have a lot of holidays or festivals. We have festival dedicated to scarecrows or at least the theme is scarecrow (this is what you call unique). We likewise have this thing we call Pagoda Festival where we built a river boat or a floating pagoda and we parade it up and down the river with a procession of boats. This is a catholic feast, I think, where a religious image is paraded in the pagoda.

Japan does the valentine's day/white day combo too! I remember learning about it in college. Here in miami I guess the most unique holiday would be Noche Buena, which is a Hispanic thing. It's basically Christmas, but done on Christmas eve instead of Christmas day. Oh! We also eat grapes on new year's. Don't know why but it's supposed to be for good luck.

Groundhogs day is actually a pagan-based holiday that has many names: Groundhogs day, Imbolc, Oimelc (Ewe’s Milk), St. Brigit’s Day (Brighid, Brigitte, etc), and Candlemas. It's based on the Gaelic goddess Brigit that was so powerful in the British Isles that she kind of blending seamlessly into a Saint once Christianity started taking over. She's the Goddess of hearth, childbirth, and magic. If the worst of winter is over Brigit's serpent emerges on Brigit's Day from it's home in the sacred mound. If it doesn't emerge or peeks out then goes back inside, then winter will hang on for a couple more weeks. Groundhogs Day is just a modernized version of this that has seen many different variations throughout the years. It's interesting to see how things change and progress to fit humanity at each moment in history.

Here in the Philippines we really have a lot. Fiestas and Festivals here and there that even last for a couple of days. Independence Day (which I assume a lot of countries also have this hahaha) It is celebrated every June 12th to commemorate the actual anniversary date of the end of the Spanish rule in the country (which lasted for more than 300 years). Many people, including government officials, employees, and students, participate in nationwide parades. However, the main highlight is the police and military parade in Manila headed by the country's incumbent president, followed by a speech and a 21-gun salute 🇵🇭❤️

not that it counts as an actual holiday, but here in South Africa we have National Civvies Days, which is mostly focused at schools, since our National School Dress-code is a uniform and civvies is a term we use when referring to clothing that is not part of a uniform (civilian wear). the actual date can vary, but it usually falls on a Friday. What sets it apart from other Civvies Days, is that the entire public-school system across the nation participates in it, while a regular Civvies Day is usually restricted to one school. Kids can wear their regular clothes to school as long as it's appropriate (ie, no offensive T-shirts; no bathingsuits or bikinis). It's also encouraged to bring a small donation of money to the school on the day to be allowed to wear civvies, the donation itself is not mandated, but is required in order to wear civvies. National Civvies Day often coincides with Spring Day (1 September) as it's viewed as the first day of Spring in the Southern Hemisphere. another South African holiday we have is 16 December, known as the Day of Reconciliation (formerly known as the Day of The Vow). Originally chosen as a day of commemoration of the Voortrekker victory over the Zulus at the Battle of Blood River. It is a religious holiday due to the vow that was made to fight for unity. The Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria has a built-in solar calendar, with a cenotaph in the center of the atrium that has the original vow engraved "Ons Vir Jou Suid-Afrika" (We For Thee South Africa), the engraving is not visible from the ground floor and the sun lights up the cenotaph at Noon on the 16th of December annually, the ray of light is seen as a Blessing from God.

We have lots of celebratory days in the Philippines. 😂😂😂 Araw ng Kagitingan, April 9 This holiday is also known as Corregidor Day or Bataan Day. ‘Araw ng Kagitingan’ translates to ‘Day of Valor’ and it commemorates the surrender of thousands Filipino, American and Chinese-Filipino soldiers to the Japanese forces during World War II. Most of the soldiers died during what is now known as the Bataan Death March, a 140km trek where they had to endure exhaustion, dehydration and cruelty from their captors.

Of all the US holidays... Groundhog Day lol. Punxsutawney Phil is the national groundhog (I think), but in Ohio we have our own groundhog named Buckeye Chuck. It would be interesting to see if other states have their own groundhog. And John, it's 6 more weeks of winter. ;)
