Hi, I've had costochondritis for 5 years now and like most people had searched the Internet and forums for any info I could find. It however seemed to be this mystery condition that the docs say would go away, but it didn't. it was so painful and seriously getting me down. Then mid December I found a video on you tube. Just please take a look for yourself. Search. How to fix (most) Costochondritis. There is a part 1 and a part 2. The video made total sense and after purchasing a Backpod and 3 weeks later I have practically no chest pain and can also breath again. My back is certainly getting looser too. Please just take a look, I thought I was stuck with this for life but thanks I'm not. It's working for me so obviously knowing how bad this condition is I want to tell as many people as possible. Good luck .

Watch the videos mentoned above, look at right hand column and I believe the viedos load right after this video. The Back Pod that Dr August sells really really really does work and costs $80 but it's the best $80 you will ever spend in your life. Also, use ice on the painful areas for the pain and this also really really really works. Make sure you are not stressing the chest muscles by lifting heavy objects (which could be anything heavy). Do muscle stretches that are mentioned in various videos by these two gentlemen. It all takes time to heal like everything else in life and there is no magic bullet from Dr. Whitecoat like pain bills, surgery and anything else Dr. Whitecoat can think of. He knows nothing about this muscle/rib malady he might be able to say this is what you have but is of no help in recovering from Costo, but Steve August is of great help and is a Godsend.

DR Dickinson - I've just had similar issues and it's turned out to be a mixture of Celiac's Disease & food allergies. See if you can find a local Naturopath & get them to give you a FULL stool sample (various healthcare will test for Celiacs, but may miss other conditions. You want to ensure the stool sample tests for EVERYTHING if poss). In the meantime, try avoiding Gluten, Dairy & Nuts etc. & see if it helps. It may not, you may have a different problem, but it's harmless to try & may help. good luck.

That was so helpful, thanks a lot! Five months ago I got some serious chest pain (which was not helped by a panic attack), went to emergency and nothing was wrong. Since then I had a lot of anxety about my chest, including more trips to the hospital. Each time all the tests came up with nothing. I kicked up my exercise routine recently and started to life weights and run more than usual, one more trip to hospital following chest pain while running got them to give me an echo which concluded that I had no heart problem and it was indeed costochondritis caused by my weightlifting. It's so good now to know that the pain is just a simple inflammation and that it can be managed easily.

@@DoggoWillink Hey Doggo, same here happens when I play the guitar and I'm hunched over. So I have to maintain good posture to avoid having a flare. Which I usually relieve it by stretching the front neck muscles. Brace your core and tilt your head backwards so you can stretch these front muscles. Scalenes are the muscles if I'm not mistaken. This is just for temporary relief but you have to be really mindful about your posture whenever you're seated or standing.

great video guys. I work as an orthopedic PTA- yesterday I was showing a patient how to do 'goblet squats' with a 50# dumbbell, did a few reps with no problems (don't recall smacking the dumbbell into my chest hard at all), then 10 minutes later as i'm doing manual therapy on my next shoulder patient, start getting lower L rib pain that progressively gets worse over the next 20-30 minutes to the point where I was nauseated from the pain. My clinic owner and I tried a few things to see if we could pinpoint what was going on, but no localized TTP at all which we found strange, but I was in no shape to continue working. I went home, loaded up on advil and started icing off/on, felt much better after an hour, then the pain returned but more medial into the sternum and upper chest while trying to sleep- just couldn't find any comfortable position at all- no way in hell could I lay on my side or stomach as it instantly increased the pressure in my chest. All night i'm tossing and turning debating whether to go to the ER "just in case", but my health insurance sucks and i've been thru the whole "let make sure it's not your heart" thing before that cost me a months rent from all the tests they ran only to tell me "nope its not your heart" (that one was related to a fainting episode I had after suffering 2nd degree burns from cooking oil, I humored my parents and got checked out, luckily I interned at a burn-unit so my burn/wound care skills were up to par and i kept in touch with my CI from the unit).

I have had costochondritis for about 25 years it used to come once or twice a year sometimes stay for two weeks but up to about 3 months. I have had cortisone injections into the cartilage I have had a lot of treatment for it. The combination that work best with me was prednisone dose pack, Trazodone, and Vicodin, and cytotec for my stomach. I used to be so nauseated I had burns on my chest from heating pads and also it made me nauseous and I couldn't eat I couldn't reach I could stretch for anything I have been on disability for 3 months and then it goes away without a trace. it had gone away for a couple of years but now it is slowly creeping back up and I am going to go to the doctor to get my regular regimen. This has made me suicidal before I felt like I couldn't take the pain because it was so excruciating thank you both for sharing.

Hey Bob and Brad, thanks for putting out your informative videos. I've struggled with costochondritis for 3 months, and it was just diagnosed a couple days ago as costochondritis and not just strained intercostals. I've spent several weeks resting, but the costo flares up still even with very minor exercise. I've gone to a chiro 10 times in the last 3 weeks, multiple massage therapists, a physical therapist, and three primary care doctors. What do you recommend I do to heal up sooner than I've been healing over the past 3 months? I had minor chest pain on and off for the last 1-2 weeks. The other night i woke up with very painful sharp pain in my left side of my chest, almost near the rib cage that lasted for a bit. It is so useful to learn about this. Years ago I had extensive heart checks in hospital because of chest pain, nothing wrong with heart. I've had restricted breathing from time to time since I was 12, I'm now 67! No doctor ever mentioned costochondritis to me, yet from what I have read recently and from my own observations about my body, I know that is what it is. So good to know what to do about it - self help. My worst problem is not the pain, but it is the lack of being able to breathe freely.

Thank you so much for the video. I've had bad pain on both sides of my sternum for over two years now. It usually feels like my whole front chest wall is clenched and in very bad aching (not sharp) pain. It's quite bad when I'm sitting or standing upright, especially when sitting or standing still. I can aggravate the pain when pushing hard on my sternum or between my ribs (maybe #6 &7) on both sides of the sternum. The pain pretty much goes away completely when I lay down, however. This might be because my breathing gets shallower when I lay down to rest. I'm wondering if these symptoms are consistent with costochondritis. I've had other tests (ekg, CT scan, mri, endoscopy) and they all came up negative. Thank you for your help!

I have had recurring chest pains for a while now. Gone to the Dr. and he said it was most likely "fleeting pain". He did an EKG and chest x-ray and everything was fine. However, I'm still having pains and wondering if I should get further testing to ensure that it isn't a heart condition that is still causing the pain. If not, I'm pretty positive I may have this...

I was diagnosed with costochondritis yesterday but mine is on the right. scared the heck out of me. I actually had pain in chest radiating to breast and thought i felt a lump in my breast. ran to urgent care and they did a breast exam and felt nothing suspicioius thank god, but everytime i moved my arm, i had pain and was actually feeling rib or cartilage that she said felt normal but costo. caem about after i used two large mr. clean erasers down to nothing scrubbing crayon off of two walls and i also carry my 35 pound kid on my left hip and have poor posture at my desk job. i was suggeseted to put a pillow under my rear end to sit on but is here anything else i can do to help my posture at my desk?? im here 8 hours a day typing for work. and my ribs hurt by the end of the day. By they way, you guys are AWESOME and i really enjoy your videos.

I got this diagnosed today. Hence I was looking for youtube videos regarding this and jumped here. Well, guys if you are going through this please see a doctor asap. I was going through this from last one year. The onset of pain happened after doing a good workout and yoga. When I stopped, I felt better. When I started again, I felt terrible. So I thought it's just a minor injury and avoided to see a doctor. But today (11/06/2021) my doctor scolded me for bearing this pain from a long time. He advised me to get some tests. And medicines too.. well I'll update my condition after 4 weeks if anyone of you wants to know about my experience, as my doctor said, it might get better. I hope you all get better soon. ❤️

Physiotherapist Steve August explains that its merely a mechanical issue. He says that the costovertebral joints (back rib joints that connect to vertebrae) are jammed and the hinges are unable to move, cause the rib hinges at the front on your sternum to compensate and therefor become inflamed.

I thought I had a heart attack this morning the pain was so bad. Went to the ER and they did an EKG and did CT Scan and nothing came back wrong with my heart. It was some of the worst pain I've ever felt in my life. I have no idea what caused it, it woke me out of a dead sleep at 6AM. They diagnosed it as costochondritis since none of the tests came back positive. Im just confused how it went from zero pain to thinking I had a heart attack literally overnight. I just got home from the hospital and it still is extremely tender and painful.

I was diagnosed with this years ago after a cold , now once again I’m having a flare up . I’m so uncomfortable the pain is in my upper chest area but also can be felt when I press on certain spots . Pain is also in my shoulders and back I was just fine before this cold . I think due to me constantly sneezing it tensed up everything & caused irritation & inflammation... Definitely considering getting a back pod because nothing else helps & I don’t have anything at the moment to substitute.

I've had this for months and I have been unable to play sports which is very depressing for my sort of lifestyle. I've seen my GP multiple times this year and she came to the conclusion that it was anxiety which was complete rubbish considering I am very confident and hardly ever 'feel' anxious. So I paid to get private tests done like an ECG and they said my heart was fine which reassured me but at the same time I wished they had found something because they still didn't know what was wrong. About 7 months of feeling awful I went to A and E pretending to be really really ill and they done multiple tests and found out it was costochondritis which could have been treated with antibiotics ages ago. NHS is a shambles.

I have been suffering from costochondritis for years now, but lately it has been debilitating everything i do. If i carefully slowly raise one arm to apply deodorant or wash/brush my hair, or teeth, or change my shirt, anything..i mean basic hygiene is killing me here! The slightest movements are stopping me dead in my tracks with the worst sharp pains...i actually keep getting stuck in bed where i cant even roll over or sit up. It sounds ridiculous i'm not even 30 and im hobbling around like a little old lady scared to move. I also have a consistent pain in my lower left ribs that are 24-7 never go away, not sure if its related as costo comes and goes but my lower left ribs are always bugging me, i walk around constantly pressing on them and i can't stand t-shirts or seat belts the lightest touch drives me insane :( As someone who has been punched in the chest hundreds of times i don't know if i just have permanent damage, but it was diagnosed as costochondritis and people seem to make light of it like " its not life threatening therefore just ignore it" but its crippling me.. Just hoping there is some cure.

You probably need a breast reduction and lift and stretches for the chest. The same thing was happening to me when i was 20 and i had big breast my while life prior to that from a young age after the breast reduction my back had an immediate difference for the better and the pain in my rib cage was their but stretching really helped and watching videos like this and putting them into practice. The pain for me on some days is still really bad but when i lay down or do the stretches it alleviates it . I dont think it ever goes away though

I was hit in the upper chest a few months back and it caused sever pain when breathing deeply or coughing. I went to the doctor to get it checked out. He said the trauma caused Costochondritis on my 3rd rib (on the rigtht) but thankfully the pain has been getting better over time. Apparently it takes up to 6 months to fully recover. But what is scaring me is that there is a noticeable contour change after the blow to my chest. Compared to the left side, which is normal, the cartilage on the right side is noticeably lower in elevation. When I feel the junction between the rib and cartilage where the hit occurred there is a noticeable step down from the rib to the cartilage. Will my rib cartilage eventually come back into place like it was before? Is there anything I can do to get it back into position? Does this mean the cartilage to rib junction is weaker? Will there be adverse effects from this?

Will this also cause severe back, shoulder, and armpit pressure point pain?I have been feeling a form of this for 1.5 years now. I was a high level athlete (college & professional football) with no major injuries and it's been 3 years since I put on pads. Recently, I took off 1 month from training/working out to see if it would clear up...no such luck. Note: heart has been cleared by cardiologist.

This kind of pain started last year and I went to go see a doctor and pointed out where that cartilage is and said it hurts there. Sometimes my left or right chest hurt too. And there'd be times I couldn't breathe. It's hard to breathe because of the pain. And so the doctor diagnosed me with costochondritis. I haven't been feeling any pain for a few months then it came back again. This time it's only rare. Doesn't happen that much. Now, a year had passed, I've been buying pain relievers but I don't take them because I don't want my body to get used to the pain relievers. I just take them when it gets too much. And it's not in that area (rib cage and chest wall thing) that hurts. Pretty much everywhere in my chest hurts. It occurs when I'm at rest and intensifies when I do physical activities. I too experience other pains like back pains and all.

i have a question. with this issue, can it pop up a lump that will move or disappear? whatever is going on with me has been happening for a quite a few months and sadly i am still awaiting the doc appointment so i still have no answers to what may be going on and trying to google search doesnt find my symptoms. sometimes when i stretch and even sometimes when i curl into fetal something on my right side shifts, it does become painful and hard to breathe and something about the size of a golf ball will pop up directly under my sternum. i have to instantly stand up and put my arms into the air and slowly align my body straight (does not work laying down), after a few seconds to a minute in this position whatever the lump is (whatever shifted) will slowly disappear back into my chest. after an "episode" i am left extremely sore and if move wrong it pops right back up/out...
@dukeon
@dukeon 5 жыл бұрын
wastedlady - I had a very similar experience except my ‘lump’ doesn’t sound like was as big as yours is. The doctor told me that costochondritis can present with a lump on or near the ribs/sternum, because it’s an inflammatory issue. My lump didn’t come and go, though, it formed when the pain began, and gradually subsided over about two weeks. You should definitely get advice from your doctor, because any kind of lump needs to be examined. Best of luck.

I’ve had this pain/sensation for several months now (much of the time it’s a tightness or pressure sensation, or fluttering, not even necessarily pain, but I have very localized and specific pain in those areas every week or so at some point, mostly left side). I went to the hospital after the first month or two of it, and my EKG, X Ray, and blood work came back fine. I’ve been thinking of going back as I had a bad flare up the last two days. It’s not terrible pain it just is hard to deal with the constant sensation and the anxiety of it. It just doesn’t feel good when it feels like you have a lump or tightness there. I’m a 31 male by the way (underweight, so generally not considered to be at risk of heart issues). This time I noticed what seems to be slight swelling on two areas in the region, both on the joint areas (first rib on left side, a small lump under the end of my collar bone, near the sternum area, and less of a lump slightly off center on my third rib on the right side). I’m starting to think it’s tietze’s syndrome. Is it possible it’s an infection even though earlier my blood work was good? I don’t feel like I have an infection to be honest, usually I don’t feel good overall when I have an infection (ie I had staph in my lower back before this started, don’t think it’s connected, and it made me feel sick, the antibiotics cleared that up extremely quickly). I also have no other bodily symptoms of something worse. I have no appetite or weight loss, nothing. Just this feeling in my chest. I notice when I play the guitar, within two days it flares up exceptionally badly. I’m starting to wonder if it’s an infection.

Yeah i am experiencing the exact symptoms you have but for about 3 months now, and my gp does not know whats wrong even after blood work and x rays. I seem to mostly get a very weak dull ache/ tightness pain on my 6th left rib at the costochondral juntion to the rib bone, the pain comes and goes randomly and occasionally it's very tender and i can feel a lump that comes and goes its very strange.
