Hello Tony. Thanks for you videos. I can say I get a lot out of them. The outside knee pain you are describing was me. Exactly as you describe it. Slightly below or near the joint. Weeks after surgery I was getting to 110 degree flexion. But soon this pain became limiting. The pain radiated down these of my calf, like shin splints and into the heel of my foot. I spent from the time I woke up until about 3PM working it back to 95 or 100 degrees and could not go further. Because of Covid and my situation I could not attend PT for around 4.5 months and was doing what I could from home using your videos and others. Even after PT, I could see very very minor improvement. But still not back to 110. About 35 years ago I had extra articular ACL repair. Not a common or an effective repair. I really believe a lot of the problems I had were because of this. The surgeon chose to leave the repair and the hardware (2 screws) in place as they did not interfere with the new knee parts. Maybe the correct decision. I do not know. A few weeks ago I needed some unrelated minor surgery. They did a local anesthesia which basically numbed my lower body. During recovery, I took the opportunity to see if I could get more movement without the pain. I could achieve 120 degrees, maybe even 130 while still under a local. I heard a couple of minor pops and did experience swelling and bruising on the outside a few days later. But, now that pain is not stopping my progress, only the 6 months of limited mobility and tight tissue I am working through. So, basically I performed self manual manipulation. My question, if I had not done this, would it have eventually gone away or do you think this or another procedure would have been required? I just passed 6 months and am making better progress, but still have a ways to go to achieve 130 degrees flexion. Stairs are no problem going up, better than before going down but still not where I need it to be.

Got to tell everyone about this. I went to Poland from Britain, because of our crap health system, for my surgery, 2 week all inclusive. This was not covered by the physios there. On returning home this side knee pain came on suddenly knocking me back and panicked by thoughts of failure of the new knee, for about 5 days I felt I was going backwards, sleeping was murder. Pain set my PT back. Now I’m back on track and thanks to you pal I realise it’s part of the process. You’ve been a great help thanks a lot. Bless you keep it up.

I had a TKR (L) 2013 and just had the (R) done 5 weeks ago (Robot) I must say the new tech is far better as I have great movement and the scar is less invasive than the first! Tony the biggest issue is you must follow the Physios advice and do the exercises as directed! If they say only 10 bends as such than do only 10 do not push as each day we get stronger and it improves which I have can validate. No pain No gain! Trust in your own judgement and those who know what’s best and if you are in doubt ask don’t suffer in silence. I enjoy your videos they are right on! Blessings from Australia 🇦🇺

My name is Betty and I am 66 years old. My original knee replacement was 4 years ago and since it had become unstable my surgeon recommended a revision. That surgery was 6 weeks ago and I'm doing great with PT.....my flexion is 135 and extension is 0. Night time pain is intense and I had suspected my lateral knee pain involved the fibula. This video confirmed my thoughts and I thank you for sharing your expertise!

Thanks again Tony. March 16 and, in the UK, no physiotherapy or surgeon follow up. Have that front tibia pain but the fibula head is in pain and that’s where the clunking click comes from. I spoke to the surgeon on the phone and he says there’s no cause for alarm but will X-ray just to check, that was 5 weeks ago. Because of these times, you’re doing such a great service, so many of us appreciating your work on sharing your knowledge. Cheers my friend 👍

My consultant showed me my x-ray and it's clear that there is no outward impingement on tissue but that any pain on either side is caused by the collateral ligaments having to get used to the new alignment of the joint. I said that the angle of my foot point out (varus?) was more than previously and he said that it had previously been incorrect and the positioning of the new knee had corrected it. The left/right side pain I 'have' experienced is diminishind so it in my case it must be a case of the ligaments having to get used to their new neighbour! I'm 4 months TKR - UK.

It can be fibromyalgia and I say that at the age of 67 I’ve had two knee replacements and two hip replacements I suffer with fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis I asked my surgeon about the constant pain I get in and around the areas of the implants, and he put it probably down to fibromyalgia which has a multitude of problems it can cause. Regards John

Thank you so much for these videos, these are the best . They pretty much hit the nail on the head as to what I have been feeling. I’m 14 months po and still uncomfortable right below the knee going across and side of shin feels like a shin splint. It also gets worst depending on the shoe I wear if they are too high at the sole I’m sure sure why that is.

Hello I have been having extreme pain in my shin, calf, and inner side of my knee after TKR I had a serious break in the tabula and fibula bones and knee joint three years ago and several operations to fix those issues the tightness is very painful I exercise regularly and while I'm working out the pain gets a bit better but the pain returns soon after. During the original break the perennial never had been pinched by the broken bone back there they said looking at the x-ray that the bones had healed all the way through but I still have lots of pain in these areas very had to deal with 😭

Question??? Why do I have pain in my shine and ankle. Since the surgery they are very tender to the touch
@totaltherapysolutions4 жыл бұрын
Yep, that is very common. It might be from the way your lower leg was secured during surgery or it might be from the way you have been walking since surgery. These symptoms will improve as you normalize the way you walk and spend more time on your feet. It is a slow process. Measure improvement with a calendar and not a stopwatch.

Today is my 8th week post TKR. I can bend my knee 120 degree but I still have the feeling of tightness when I bend it. I developed keloids or adhesions on the incision site & this give me discomfort & tightness when I bend my knee. I cannot walk yet properly without a walking stick, still feeling heavy on my knee & become grossly swollen if I stand for a long time, I have muscular pains after standing even for just half an hour, but I can use the stationary bike already 2 days ago. I am concerned of the keloids because it is the one causing me pain stiffness & discomfort. Is there anything I can do with the keloids or adhesions. Thank you.

Hello, Thank you for all these informative videos. I had total knee replacement and everything was going great. I am a 72 year old active female and wanted to find out if some people get neuropathy! I have it on the inside of my leg up to my knee. I am taking Gabapentin 300 MG 3 times a day. At night mostly is when my leg bothers me, so sometimes I have a hard time to sleep because nothing can touch my leg. I am starting my 10th week on Wed March 17. I do have full range of motion. Sometimes my knee does feel like I have a weight on it, but I can function. So I just wanted to find out if you have had someone that has had neuropathy with total knee replacement. Thank you!

I had TKR 11 weeks ago and it has has gone splendid except for the topic of this video. I have 130+ degrees of Flexion but can't get past 7 degrees of Extension. When at that limit i have significant pain in the TibFib joint. It feels like at a that point I am hitting a mechanical limit. Could that be possible? Is there anything I can do to get pasted the limit I am experiencing? Thank you in advance for your help. PS. I can't seem to get any of my medical professionals to really listen to me. just sluffed off as "just need to do more Quad sets".

Tony I've had knee replacements on both knees at different times in the past two years. I'm having lots of pain under my knee cap especially when going up or down stairs, or when trying to get up from a chair, toliet, etc. I've been told from a PA with my surgeon that my xrays are showing bone spurs under both knee caps which have been growing over the past year or so and are getting much worse. They said I need to have them removed so I said ok but are they most likely there now from an underlying condition and if so what could that possibly be???

Hello Tony, Great videos I have learned a great deal from the information you share. I am in the Cincinnati area. I am 52 and had right TKR almost 6 years ago, left TKR little over 2 years ago. Two different surgeons did my surgery. I have had pain on lateral side and in back of both knees in exactly the same locations since surgeries. Have had too many x-rays to count, only to have surgeon tell me knee itself is fine. Have not had an MRI since either surgery. Now I am being asked to see a pain specialist. I have no idea what I should do or where I should turn. Any advice you can lead would be appreciated.

Can a tendon or ligament be rubbing the fibula or knee itself? When I bend my knee it’s like someone is plucking a guitar string on the side of my knee

Yes! Absolutely. Fibers of the ITBand can do that. The hamstring tendon can do that as well.

Just the answer I needed. I am 4 weeks from surgery and my shin hurts really bad at times. I do have a question on ankle pain. My ankle feels like it is sprained and is still sore after 4 weeks. Is this normal?
@totaltherapysolutions4 жыл бұрын
It is common, maybe not what I would call normal! You are likely walking totally different. You lower leg bone is likely lined up over your ankle differently than before surgery. That is putting all new strains on the ankle and with time your ankle will adapt to your new knee. It is like having a noise new neighbor. With time you start to acclimate.

Hi, Tony! I'm new to your site...but better late then never. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!I'm six weeks post op TKR. Having trouble reaching the 90° ROM that has been set for me. MUA has been mentioned to me, but on my last visit (this week) I have been given another three weeks to reach 100°-100° ROM. MUA is still a real possibility. Having had a THA, repair of femur, complete with rod and screws, and the TKR all on the same leg, my fear is possible femur fracture again. I may add that the two prior surgeries have left my quad muscles weak d/t some nerve damage which I think has impaired my leg strength. I will keep watching, maybe you'll address this issue.
@Lyn48173 жыл бұрын
Tony I agree with your logic of frontal knee pain. In the first couple of years I always said I could distinctly feel the cut off bone mass where it met the prosthesis, especially if I lent on it or it got so cold from being out doors in winter that I would take a bath, to warm my knees up to get rid of my bone pain. I have always suffered greatly from the cold. To the extent we now live in the tropics and viola, my knees don't suffer from cold any more. It wasn't the main reason we returned to the tropics after spending 15 years there. Knowing we wanted to retire to the tropics. Best think we could have done for my osteoarthritis. I wouldn't recommend it as a sea change for those who haven't experienced the worse of the tropics weather.
