So, the beginning of WW1 is actually really messy, but it goes something like this: Austria-Hungary wants to bully/Annex Serbia, and there's a lot of tension between the two. Germany (specifically Kaiser Wilhelm), tells Austria he'll support them in war. At the same time, they're worried about Russia, and want to start a war to curb their power before Russia has absolute military supremacy. They also know that, if they go to war with Russia, France will declare war on them because they're a Russian Ally. So they come up with a plan (the Schlieffen plan) to knock france out early. This involves circumventing the franco-german border, which is heavily fortified. To do this, the plan calls for an invasion through Belgium, who were neutral. When Ferdinand is assassinated (by a Serbian), the Austro-Hungarian empire uses it as an excuse to declare war, even though no one really liked Ferdinand and despite the fact they could find no link to the Serbian government. Ironically, he was pretty much the only one preventing this war in the first place. With this, Russia (who is also Serbias ally), Germany, France and Austria-Hungary all go to war, and the Schlieffen plan is put into effect. The invasion of Belgium, which was a British trade partner, brings Britain into the war. Bit long, and I might get a bit wrong, but I've been interested in it recently TL;DR: France, Russia, Belgium and Britain all end up in a war against Germany, while Germany's ally (Austro-Hungary) ended up at war with Serbia and Russia.
