When talking to Jinshi, Lakan describe himself as the villain of his own story. It is not uncommon from people carrying guilt as a form of self-punishment and attemp at denying themselve the right to be a victim. Someone could speculate that's carying the guilt of what happen to Maomao mom is what lead Lakan to play the despicable villain part. Also: "Her defiant eyes, like a balsam flower that would burst if touched" FengXian = Balsam. "Woodsorrel, also know as Cat's foot[...]like balsam, touching a ripe fruit causes the seeds to burst." Woodsorrel = Cat foot; Cat foot = Maomao. Episode title: "Balsam and Woodsorrel" a.k.a. "FengXian and Maomao"

It doesn’t say in the anime, but he tried so not go, but unfortunately, couldn’t oppose his father. He had no idea that she would have his kid, but later in the episode, when he figures it out. He realizes he could have used this as a way of getting out of going on the three year trip. Also, While he is shown to have something of a relationship with Meimei, it is Fengxian who he is truly in love with. It says in the anime that Meimei had hopes of Lakan buying her out, only to end with her heart broken as he loved Fengxian, her big sister in the brothel, just a little bit more. Meimei did truly want Lakan to buy her out, and even had affection for him, but he only had eyes for the dying Fengxian. The entire love story is a tragedy.

Regarding Mao Mao's Finger: FengXian did Mutilate Mao Mao's finger as a baby. It's hard to tell in the anime, but her Left Pinky was cut off from the last joint. As Mao Mao says, it DOES grow back to a degree, and without staring at it in multiple scenes you wouldn't notice, but it is deformed, a bit shorter than it should be, and has a odd gnarled fingernail on the pinky.

The game they were playing in the beginning is called Xiangqi, or Chinese Chess (though in the show they call it Shogi, which is Japan's version). Its assumed, but not proven, that all versions of chess originate from India

@AnimeDateNight hmmm that's so weird. I tried to look up and see if ToHo owns Madhouse but from what I could find they don't. But it's definitely Madhouse who were in charge of the Frieren production. Toho does have investments in Nippon TV which is a big shareholder of Madhouse so maybe that's why ToHo copyrighted you??? this is only my best guess haha

@@macamoo12 Toho was one of the producers. I can't find out exactly what aspect they helped on, whether it was budgeting or if they actually helped animate (its common for studios to contract work out to keep schedule). But they seem to be making a lot of the physical merchandise. I'm doubting they had any real legal backing to push a copyright claim but considering its YT any challenge would heavily be in Toho's favor regardless even if their claim is easily debunked bs.

In the end Lakan did absolutely nothing wrong. Meanwhile Fengxian was a horrible mother that disfigured her child. It pisses me off to no end that Maoamo STILL hates him. The ONLY stated reason is because she's jealous of him. And also that he's weird I guess. Which she has no right to judge him for mind you. She's logical and thoughtfull in almost all situations but here she just hates her fathers guts for the pettiest of reasons. Relationships in this show just do not move whatsoever. Jinshi and Maomao are forever stuck in place. Maomaos relationship with Lakan does not improve no matter how much love and care he shows and no matter how non existent her reason for hating him. This stuff feels more forced than episode 500 of Naruto. This isn't just me either, pretty much all the light novel readers feel this way.

Maomao doesnt really "hate" him. She dislikes him on the personal level because of how awful their first meeting was and her own pride. She cant stand his talent and how Luomen praises him without caveats. If Lakan did not really do anything wrong, it was a car crash of Fengxian being too proud to be upfront and him being too intoxicated by her and the games to notice all the ques she was giving him. He is very much on the spectrum so expecting him to read social ques is like asking mercy from a wild beast. Maomao is so much like both her parents, Intelligent, Proud to a fault, curious and on the spectrum.

@Shinekage And that's petty. She's jealous of him and treats him like shit for it. I haven't read the 3 most recent volumes but I cannot imagine her becoming nicer after everything. I really liked this series for a while but the refusal to make any changes to relationships is really starting to kill my enthusiasm.
