Written for Andrew Wood (lead singer of Mother Love Bone and Malfunkshun). Chris Cornell and Matt Cameron of Soundgarden joined Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament ( rhythm and bass guitar respectively for Mother Love Bone ), along with Eddie Vedder ( Bad Radio ) and Mike McCready ( Shadow ), to make this beautiful tribute album written by Cornell for Wood. Gossard, Ament, Vedder and McCready ( along with Dave Krusen on drums ) had just formed Mookie Blaylock ( who later became Pearl Jam ) after Woods untimely demise. A beautiful tribute album by a bunch of not well-known 20 somethings who were about to blow the roof off of the music scene. RIP all those who were lost way before their time. ✌️

I had thought that Eddie was in town for his final audition to join Mookie and ended up at the studio while they recorded a few songs. Chris was having issues with the melody fir Hunger Strikr and Eddie figured it out. Years later, Matt Cameron became Pearl Jam's fourth, and hopefully final drummer, making Eddie's verse of Hunger Strike a preview of PJ, seven years early.

Same here. Im from 1967, roughly the same age as most of those Grunge-era musicians. The whole Alternative and Grunge movement from about 87-96ish was the embodiment of my musical experiences. It might just be time to actually react to some Mother Love Bone songs themselves. "Man Of Golden Words", "Stargazer", "Bone China", "Gentle Groove", or "Stardog Champion" would be my suggestions. This record was recorded up the street from where I live now on the northend of the Seattle metro area. It's a tribute to Andrew Wood, singer from Mother Love Bone who died from a heroin overdose. I was about 20 when this record came out. Andrew Wood was a much-loved character in the Seattle scene, locals who were in the scene still talk about him today. He and Chris Cornell had been roommates for a time on Capitol Hill area of Seattle. Members from Mother Love Bone went on to form Pearl Jam, so all of these bands are connected.

That said, I didnt listen to Mother Love Bone properly/all the way through for about 3 or 4 years after Andrew Wood had already passed. 1994 doesnt sound like a long time after 1990 right now...but at the time, it was a world between me finding my new favorite band at the time and the possibility of ever seeing them live or getting another album. Nowadays, Eddie Vedder and Anne Wilson (Heart) are about the only singers from Seattle still with us.

Lex the easiest style to play for beginners are punk rock, grunge (slower/sludgy style of punk and metal), and folk/country, indie , jangle pop, garage rock, hard rock, nu metal/rap metal, and some acoustics style music. Punk, post punk, alt rock, grunge, industrial, etc. are usually quicker power chords, barre chords and riffs so its a little simpler. . Blues can be a little challenging for beginners, blues scales. Funk, ska punk, dance rock, reggae and reggae rock are also fun to play. Pschedelic, shoegaze (noise pop/dream pop), space rock, gothic rock/darkwave of new wave, experimental/art rock, etc are more ethereal sounding are lots of amp, pedals, whammy bar effects, bends, distortions, and feedback, etc can be tricky. Metal, prog rock are little harder. More blues based and classical music based structure and influences. . At times more technical, changing notes, solos, etc. . But, everyone is different. Depends. Practice practice practice!

No, Andy Wood was very much a hardened 'street kid'. He started hanging with a rough crowd at a young age because he ran away from home often in his teens. He was a street savvy guy who could be tough when he needed. He also got arrested a few times in his teens and learned how to hold his composure in tough environments. He wasn't quite Axl-Rose-levels of teenage criminality, but he wasn't a pushover either. Despite his flamboyant stage attire, which was inspired by KISS, David Bowie, and 80s glam metal, Andy Wood was never 'soft'. He developed his drug problems way too early in life (age 14), which meant he wasn't old enough to be hired for a legitimate job. He learned how to put himself in the state of mind required for funding his various addictions early in his adolescence.

The singer that Chris wrote the song about is Andrew Wood, who WAS Chris Cornell's roommate and the lead singer of Motherlovebone. Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament from Pearl Jam were also in the band, but Layne Stayley of Alice in Chains was not. If you wanna check out a couple of cool Motherlovebone songs, Stargazer and Chloe Dancer are really cool.

And amazing I hear absolutely no reactions anywhere to Mother love bone. Yet many grunge bands pay tribute to the lead singer who passed. Would by Alice in Chains was another. Play on the name Would which sounds like the Surname Wood of the lead singer who passed.

Lex! There's no better guitarist than Mike McCready (the guy who performed this solo; Pearl Jam's lead guitarist) to help you explore the blues/grunge mix. His heroes were Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and the Rolling Stones, yielding his own inimitable style! 😃👍 (Notice that his guitar tone on this tune is nearly identical to his on "Yellow Ledbetter.")

Yeah the blues and Grunge are alike in that they have that inwardly looking into oneself the music reflects that I think , Grunge never gets old and now it’s over 30 years since what we can grunge came about it was already there actually from the early to mid 80s but it wasn’t labeled Grunge ! You can’t go wrong with blues guitar or grunge especially with both you got a great base for playing the guitar ! I’ll be 50 years old in a few days and I can honestly say this kind of music keeps my mind and spirit young I still feel like I’m 21 inside when I hear this song or any other early 90s grunge song !

The remaining members of Mother Love Bone are this band with Soundgardens singer Chris Cornell to give them a jump as well and yes at the same time while recording Eddie Vedder shows up and Chris went back to Soundgarden which was all they all wanted to see come out of this. The whole album was a tribute to Andrew Wood

Chris Cornell was one of a kind but the entire Seattle "grunge" scene rallied around one another and for a brief period recorded some of the best songs of all time.. Temple of The Dog was a one-shot tribute to Andrew Wood but literally every song on the album is a deep/dark gem.

Ahhh. Back when music was good and talent was abundant. Amazing how the planets aligned to create that one moment in time in Seattle. Pearl Jam, soundgarden, nirvana, AIC, temple of the dog, mad season...the list could go on and on. There was a special magic in the water. No doubt.

I remember how much good music was on the radio back then. The entire genre of music that was born in Seattle was incredible, too many good songs/albums and bands to name them all. It was definitely a great time to be young and I miss it dearly.

@@kwantoon agreed. Rock music was epic then and Rap was just as epic. You had the roll-over icons like Run DMC, Public Enemy, NWA, and Rakim just to list a few from the 80s, then into the early 90s we got the solo NWA stuff from Dr Dre and Ice Cube, Snoop, my favorites Bone Thugs, Busta Rhymes, WuTang, Tupac and Biggie... there's so many more. Even Outkast made it into the 90s despite being a more 2000s act. Plus you had the legit female artists like salt n peppa and tlc. And Missy. Hell, even country music was good back then! It still sounded like classic country. The 90s were a great time for music.

*I do hope someone will eventually get around to reacting to a few, at least, Mother Love Bone songs; Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns__This Is Shangri La__Bone China__Stargazer__Holy Roller__Stardog Champion. Two members (Jeff and Stone) of Temple of the Dog (also Green River and Pearl Jam) were in the band Mother Love Bone with Andy Wood when he died...and Chris Cornell (one of the Temple's singers) and Andy Wood were roommates. Andy fronted the band Malfunkshun before Mother Love Bone.*

This song was written for Cornell's Friend (Andrew Wood) who died of an overdose. This song gives me the chills everything because it reminds me of my Cousin (Andrew, ironically) who died in the same fashion Cornell did just a few months after Chris did, it was a favorite song of mine before my Cousin passed but now everything I hear it it gets me a bit emotional, especially the last verse.
