I've been using the Airpods Pro2 hearing aid function for a few weeks now, and they are a life changer. Way, way better than the $500 OTC hearing aids I was using. My battery ran low while watching TV a few nights ago. Put them back in the case for about 10 minutes and got an additional two plus hours usage. These things are great.

Great video! For me Airpods 2 as a hearing aid is a godsend in one specific area. I've used prescription hearing aids for almost ten years and have been through two pairs of Oticon hearing aids at $5000/pair. I also wear prescription glasses. Until now I could only use over-the-ear headphones if I wanted media to sound good (hearing aids + headphones = reasonably normal sound). Unfortunately, "real estate" above and behind my ears is limited with hearing aids and glasses, so headphones (like Airpods Max) are uncomfortable with the pressure they exert on my ears. I can now swap out my hearing aids for Airpods 2, which are "tuned" to compensate for my hearing deficit both in transparency mode and with media, and they are comfortable. The rest of the time I still prefer my hearing aids which provide more balanced sound.

I've got a $3000 set of Eargo. These AirPods are WAY better than the Eargo. I could buy 12 sets of these for that price. Sure wish they'd sell them in flesh colors or at least black. They are like "hey!!! I've got earbuds in". People will ultimately look at them and think I'm checked out in music land. Fortunately I have long hair so it covers them mostly. That annoys me. But whatever. I can hear!! 😊

Jason, really appreciate this review of the APP2 from someone who can actually benefit from them, you are the first I've seen so thank you! As someone who has been diagnosed with mild-moderate hearing loss I was really excited for this feature and after having used it for a few days my impression is, mixed bag but generally positive. On the plus side, it does amplify the sounds in my world so I can in fact hear my wife better and I can hear the TV better (and because of that I can keep the TV volume lower which makes her happier...happy wife happy life). On the down side it amplifies everything else, so if the dogs are chomping on bones, I hear that more. I actually find that I hear myself in my head more so the oclusion effect seems to be worse for me. If you're outside in the wind, forget about it. And sharp sounds like metal on metal, forks hitting plates, etc. kind of hurt my head. For me it's best after dinner if we're just sitting down to watch TV. Overall I think it's a positive life improvement so I say bravo to Apple for coming out with this feature!

Today I’ll try them without music; I’ll likely be glad I did. (Call me a snob, but actual hearing aids always had a stigma associated with them. AirPods Pro, on the other hand, are a subtle status symbol.) Have a good day, Jason, and thanks again!

I have a referral to get into the audiologist, still waiting though. With that said, working in customer service, even in daily casual conversation, I've found simply having my AirPods Pro 2s in transparency mode has allowed me to hear a bit clearer than unassisted. Speech is definitely distinct.
@normalisgone22 күн бұрын
Thank you for your take on these. You are the first I've heard talk about the occlusion effect. That was one of the biggest frustrations I had with hearing aids. That and the 'stigmatism' of wearing hearing aids. Who doesn't wear earpods now?? I spent $1500 on hearing aids that had the app with bluetooth controls. They were nice, but I just wasn't comfortable with them. (They really were painful to wear also.) Anyway, after watching your video, I'm fixing to make the purchase!

Excellent and honest overview Sir. Thank you so much. I too have less than normal hearing brought about by too many years of working in loud environments. I have mild/moderate hearing issues. About 5 years ago I went to an Audiologist and ended up spending $6,000 on one of the "best" hearing aids available at the time. Sigh, disappointing! They just never really did my hearing any good over time no matter how often I took them back for adjustments. Next I tried a few of the otc hearing products. Found a couple of OK ones and one good otc set that rivaled my original Audiologist ones. Time with those has now passed and I'm still looking for something better. Yes, I am picky about my hearing and really want it improved to a point so that I can comfortably converse with friends in a crowded environment or with the family at home without saying "huh?" way too often. I have ordered and am awaiting my new set of Air Pods Pro 2 to arrive. From your site and others I have watched I am hoping for a good all around "fit" for my needs. Best wishes to all the other "searchers" out there from the Left Coast of the US.

just a note: my audiologist advised against wearing hearing protection like the musicians earplugs, airpods etc. for longer periods (for people with no severe hearing issues). it will make your brain and ears got used to these gadgets, then all noise/music/etc will be more damaging when you are not wearing them. I just saw your video today - I have an appointment at Costco next week to get new hearing aids (I have a 3 year old pair from them) and while mine will be fully covered by insurance, I don't like the feel of them in my ears and they are really not great at connecting with my phone and laptop. So I'm less than enthused about getting a new pair. Having seen your review, and finding that they are $179 at BJ's right now, I just sent my husband out to get them. I'll pass on my older AirPods that don't have this feature to my daughter, since her pair is getting crackly. I'll probably still get hearing aids at Costco, but I wanted to try these for a week to see what I think and I'm hoping that they'll work well for me. I know for sure that AirPods are comfortable for me to wear, and my hearing aids get annoying by the end of the day for sure. Thanks!

Another big advantage I've found for AirPods Pro over my prescription hearing-aid is how easy it is to put them in and take them out, which I often need to do when I'm using other headphones for monitoring sound. If you choose the correct size tip they slip in easily, fit snugly and stay in your ears without worry or effort. In loud situations the occlusion plus the active noise canceling accomplishes much more than my $6000 Widex hearing aids ever can.

The worst thing about hearing aids to me is missing out on the full experience of music through headphones. Been really curious about the iOS 18 feature, because I tend to wear my AirPods Pro when I go for power walks and for exercise out of my home. I'd love to try the feature out so that I can use them for, say, walking around, and try out convos with mepoel with them on. It's a pain when I can't hear someone even with the AirPods on, then have to remove them and put my hearing aids on, which is mostly not possible since I leave them at home during my power walks and exercises. Also, since my hearing loss is moderate to severe, not yet sure how well the feature will work, but worth a try. Really appreciate the video. As you are aware from Apple‘s description of its hearing aid feature in AirPods Pro 2, it is intended for those with mild to medium hearing loss, the kind associated with age, as in losing the ability due to hear the higher pitched sounds, which if you’re in conversation with women can make you miss a lot of words. That description is almost exactly what I am experiencing in my battle with hearing loss. What intrigued me about Apple‘s approach is how they first test your hearing to determine the frequencies that you are having problems with. Then, when you activate the hearing feature on the AirPods, the results of your hearing test cause your AirPods to boost the frequencies that you have trouble with. To me anyway, the simplicity of this approach represents a leap of innovation that challenges a very comfortable industry accustomed to justifying its stratospheric prices by invoking the mystical expertise of the “audiologist.” I’ve had my hearing tested by an audiologist and believe me, this is not rocket science! These AirPods have made a significant difference in my being able to understand what people are saying. To me, the proof of the pudding is in the tasting. These things work for me, and that fact is far more significant than the hocus pocus arguments an industry that sees its meal ticket in jeopardy. I understand your hearing loss is congenital and more serious than mine. It seems the possibility of a significantly improved hearing aid is more likely to come from Apple than from an industry that relies on your hearing loss for its income. Anyway, best of luck!

Crazy deal I couldn’t pass up. Also- I want these for killer sound and also noise cancellation due to being sensory sensitive. I also have some hearing loss. It’s wild that these can work as hearing aids as well as to cancel noise. I imagine you can’t be listening to something while also enhancing your hearing??? My biggest concern is that they may be uncomfortable but I’m thrilled they have a variety of sizes of earbud caps. I use xs with my loops. I’m also concerned about the battery life being only 6 hours. Hopefully it doesn’t take too long to charge. The hardest part would be if I’m out of the house for hours with no place to charge. Well I rushed to comment that. After iOS 18.1 this got completely ruined by Apple - they disabled this feature for all countries where the Hearing Aid functionality is not supported yet. Huge step back and downgrade and a very valid reason for people to not buy airpods pro, in case they were thinking to buy it as hearing aids. If you live in a country where the Hearing Aids functionality is not supported yet and you have updated your iOS to 18.1, you WON’T be able to use custom transparency mode based on your audiogram anymore and the airpods won’t work as hearing aids, like they did before!

For the record, Several companies have had hearing aid level support in their ear buds LONG before Apple. Nuheara's IQBoosts were out almost ten years ago. I am wondering how you feel now that the AirPod Pro hearing upgrade has dropped? I was excited and patiently waited for the k upgrade to drop. I am a musician with a bit beyond moderate hearing loss. I am struggling to find settings that allow me to hear my and my band mates instruments better. The occlusion affect and noise cancellation are driving me wild. It sounds like my instrument is greatly muffled. I am looking for suggestions. The AirPod Pro is my 5th hearing aid. The 1st two were from a hearing company and on the expensive side. The next two were otc Olive. They did pretty well. What stands out from these 4 is they all had a music mode ~ the filters and compression are removed. Also, there is an equalizer to help massage the sound. I can’t seem to find either of these two important features on the AirPod Pro.

Jason, can the air pod pro 2 be used as hearing aid without having to be connected to the phone or iPad? I know the pods have to be programmed. But once programmed can I leave my phone at home and use the pods like real hearing aids? Thanks.

Yes, they are set up through the phone, but you don't have to have the phone with you at all times.

I bought the OTC Audien hearing aids. Since my hearing loss is mild, these are like my trainers since I know my hearing will get worse. I only wear them when I am with friends who speak softly. Most people I can hear well. With a few exceptions, they are ok. One exception is they fall out of my ears on occasion. Another is they make things sound tinny. When I need to get better hearing aids I will go to an audiologist and use my insurance discount. I don't think the AirPods will work for me. Thanks for your video I "liked" it.

If you are in a restaurant at a table with many people talking the same time, how does it know to boost the conversation of the one person you are listening too. It seems it would still be jumbled. Also will it work with my android phone or do I have to switch to the Apple ecosystem?
@thejasontlewisАй бұрын
There’s some DSP magic happening in there. It sounds like it uses the noise cancelling function to dampen certain frequencies and isolate the frequencies most prevalent in speech. Unfortunately, you do have to on iOS to take advantage of the more advanced AirPods features.

My prescription hearing aids can function as Bluetooth earbuds. I put them in when I get up in the morning. It only takes a moment. It’s not difficult in any way. I can listen privately to my iPad at any point. I take them out at bedtime and put them in their charger. No bother with having to carry a second pair.
@thejasontlewis16 күн бұрын
That’s true, but what’s your level of hearing loss and how much did they cost? These are a great option for people who don’t have severe hearing loss or the budget for prescription aids. This is a huge boon for those who have been going without because of price or for whom situational assistance is beneficial. No one’s claim these compete with prescription hearing aids.

Just to clear things up from someone who also has some hearing loss and owns an Oticon hearing aid: the author uses the adjective "crisp" to refer to the sound of the Airpods. Crisp usually refers to the the condition of of food, especially fruits and vegetables. Hence, a refrigerator can have a "crisper". So I am not sure what he keeps referring to the produced sound as "crisp". Perhaps he means "clearer" to him by raising the high frequencies? On the whole though, I am very sketptical about Apple "Airpods" as hearing aids. I have had experience demoing a previous version of the airpods before, but frankly the sound was quite dreadful.

If you are considering using hearing aids in conjunction with a mobile phone (using Bluetooth), then there is an important issue to consider. All mobile phones contain at least one codec to facilitate audio transmission and quality. Some codecs are better than others. The single codec in the Samsung Galaxy S 24 does not support all hearing aids. On the other hand, the codec in the iPhone 16 is better quality and does a much better job of working with hearing aids. So it’s important to do your research before buying. Very few tech firms take into account the needs of consumers with disabilities (I’m looking at you Samsung).

Great video. I'd love to know why this feature is not available in the UK. I bought them thinking I could use as a hearing aid and it was an expensive mistake.
@thejasontlewis10 күн бұрын
It may be regulatory. I'm not sure. There was a backdoor way to set them up as hearing aids before. I'm ot sure if that's tstill the case. You did it through the Accessabilty section of the phone.
@melgrossАй бұрын
Just note that Apple states that as with many hearing aids, this is rated for minor to moderate hearing loss. If you need something for severe loss, this is not for you. Maybe someday, but not now. Almost no insurance covers hearing aids. That’s a shame. Costco has their own hearing aid models that they. Will set up for you, but the cheapest is $879. The most expensive is $1,995. If you need/want custom fitting adapters, that’s more. They get good ratings. They have a good warrantee. But the survey noted that the breakage rate under warrantee is an astounding 55%!

I belong to the other club - Android, so I tried the Samsung Galaxy Buds 3 Pro with my Samsung S24 Ultra. They too had impressive features and functionality. There was a 10 band hearing test, noise reduction, ambient sounds, 10 band EQ, etc. I was impressed with the sound delivered to my Buds. Phone calls and music were corrected to my hearing test. The big disappointment however was that the EQ curve or my manual EQ setting were not transferred to the EarBuds to process the ambient sound, so they don't function as hearing aids unless listening to music from the phone or taking a call. Do the AirPods EQ the ambient sound?

As a musician, you have to know that these very expensive hearing aids are not worth what they are charging for them. In a crowded noisy restaurant, you don't need to hear the clashing and banging of dishes and dinnerware ... doesn't help you to hear the human voice you are trying to discern. Hearing everyone else talking in the restaurant better also doesn't improve the problem. Getting back to your experience as a musician: When you mic a speaker cabinet, or even a human voice, the further away from the cabinet or voice, the more room "noise" you hear and the less of what you need to hear. A remote mic, like a lapel mic placed close to what you need to hear better is the solution. I've been trying to make that work with an android. Hearing aids have been worthless to me.
