Ketil showing his true colours reminds me of a conversation between the poor couple in the movie Parasite, "Even though they're rich, they're nice." "No. They're not rich but nice. They're nice *because* they're rich. Hell, if I had all this money I could afford be nice too." Ketil only showed how horrible he could be when his wealth was at risk of being taken away from him.

I have no idea how to connect these in one paragraph, so a few points: -I'm proud of Einar for being able to learn from Thorfinn's experience. When Thorfinn explains that revenge is bad for you he actually listens. He's such a good dude -Thorfinn's speech about Vinland after Arnheid's death mirrors Thors actions at the beginning of the show, when he paid a lot of money (or sheep) for a dying slave -Thorfinn has become very proactive. He's a pacifist but not passive. In his younger days he was an extremely reactive character with little initiative -Oh my god the voice acting. Arnheid's actress makes it sound very real, she has been doing a great job in the last few episodes

Slight spoilers for season 3 : Einar definitely listens and agrees to the stuff Thorfinn says. When Hild tries to kill Thorfinn, Einar says the same words to her as Thorfinn says to him here.

Thorgil is quite underrated actually. People think he might be all brute and muscles but he's actually smart. He devised that strategy of having the farmhands battle canutes forces so that he can sneak in behind. He succeeded to some extent and almost had Canutes head. He even decided to retreat in the end because he lost the element of surprise. That's very commendable decision making imo.

I don't like Ketil, but I don't necessarily hate him either. Look back the first half of the season in instances like when Einar snaps at Thorfinn for not getting angry at the retainers that were abusing them and destroyed their wheat, demanding to know why Thorfinn didn't feel the same. Thorfinn says he has no right to be angry since he also did horrible things. Far worse things than the retainers. Ketil is in his "young Thorfinn" moment. Sure, Thorfinn has the somewhat excuse of being quite young and immature. However, he wasn't a bad boy at heart. He also still realized deep down what he was doing was wrong. Like with the old English lady that protected him, showed him kindness, which only got her, her family, and her neighbors killed. Then he just flipped off that conscience and the guilt, turning a blind to the atrocities around him and facilitated by working with Askeladd's crew. Defending his actions as a just cause. To avenge his father, which he did out of a burning anger, but also because of pride and honor. To not avenge his father would seem shameful (which is also the same warrior pride and honor that kept Thorfinn from assassinating Askeladd and always demanded a duel instead). Sure, he was never shown killing an innocent non-combatant, but he still helped the vikings attack villages and ignored the cruelty. In Ketil's case he had several things taken from him. He lost the woman he loved in his youth. Who he still pines for to this day and the experience left him traumatized. She was sold off to a powerful land owner because Sverkel lacked the power or nerve to stand against the demand. It was devastating to Ketil. He lost faith in those around him. So he built his farm to be powerful. Because he didn't want to lose anything again. However, like Sverkel warned, Ketil growing his farm beyond what just one man could protect would only bring more troubles. And as the farm grew it would make him more fearful of losing that power, so it required more growing and wealth accumulation in an endless cycle to secure it. Power and wealth meant security for Ketil. A wall of protection. But it was an illusion. I don't think this has "shown Ketil's true self" any more than Thorfinn's wild days were his true self. We are ever changing creatures. We have no idea what we are like in our absolute worst moment. Thorfinn (as a boy) and Ketil go through what are tests of their fortitude as good people at their lowest moments and failed. However, it doesn't end there. Once they come out the other side of their dark moment, we can judge their actions, but also have to see how they move forward. To me, how a person deals with their sin is the true reveal of their character. Thorfinn was able to reflect, shoulder his sins, and make the choice to atone. Sometimes that road to redemption is quick, other times it is slow. Or a person never sees they were in the wrong nor tries to pay for their bad actions for whatever reason/excuse. Like blaming others or the world, as though they have no free will, always claiming the victim or something. Or the person has no moral compass and never feels bad about it. Whatever the case, we are just getting a glimpse in time when these characters are at their absolute worst. Ketil didn't lose his father like Thorfinn, but he's still losing everything he did care about. He already expressed he was completely isolated from everyone else and felt alone. The only things that mattered to him were Arnheid and the farm, which he thought protected him from being a victim. When all of that was crumbling around him, he lost it. He became a monster. In his eyes, Arnheid betrayed him and broke his heart. Of course, that was completely wrong and he gave her no opportunity to defend herself. His heart hardened and he wanted revenge, to make those who hurt him hurt in return. While you can understand what his thoughts and the reasons for his actions were, he was the villain in every way shape and form for what he did to Arnheid, who was always at his mercy and had no choice but to do everything he asked. His thoughts were only what pain he felt, not what Arnheid, a powerless slave, felt. He was likely upset his delusion of having Arnheid's love was all in his head, and, rather than realize he was the one at fault, he blamed her. Ketil is also blind to the death, pain and misery he's bringing onto everyone else on the farm by fighting back against Canute. All in his angry desperation to not be a victim again and save his life's work, as well as get revenge against Canute for betraying him to steal what he values most. He does seem to have a moment of clarity when that retainer calls him out, basically telling him he's no different than Canute. Ketil was the top dog that ruled over all of them. They had no choice but to bend to whatever Ketil wanted for fear of retribution or losing something they valued. I doubt Ketil ever tried to set anyone up with underhanded tactics like Canute is doing here, but the core part of the comparison remains. Ketil grew his farm for power and to be untouchable. Canute is trying to build his kingdom so he can be more powerful and untouchable. The retainer also indirectly brings up Ketil's past. When a poor farmer like Sverkel also had no choice when he turned over that girl Ketil loved. It's in the line "No matter how unfair it may be, you shouldn't defy the king." Sverkel knew people would have lost their lives in a bloody conflict had they angered that wealth land-owner by refusing. They could not defy him, who was the closet to a king living in their midst as these farmers had. The unfairness was something Ketil just couldn't accept or forgive his father for. And it's in the line "Do you understand what it's like to be poor like us now?" Now he's been smacked in the face with the reality he is weak and has always been weak. No matter how he tried to protect himself, there were always going to be stronger people out there to take it all away from him. And all fighting back did was delay the inevitable and get a bunch of innocent people caught in the middle of the conflict killed. Even rage-filled Ketil knew his rebellion was doomed, even without Snake warning him, but his stubborn obsession and pride would not let him back down. However, the weak and the poor like that retainer are always forced to swallow their pride and give in to the stronger.

@@OctavianAsix You're missing the entire point of Vinland Saga dude. Season 2 is important, because that's when the true battle for Thorfinn starts to become a true warrior and create Vinland . Season one is the prolog . The point of Vinland Saga is to get to Vinland and try creating it . Even season one implied this , when we are introduced to Thorfinn's father, Thors.
@foregroundeclipse8725 Жыл бұрын
@@OctavianAsix Thors tries to get through to 5 year old Thorfinn in season 1 that there's no point to bloodshed or having enemies, but since Thorfinn was just a child and the society he lives in romanrizes and glorifies violence, Thorfinn can't comprehend what his father meant. He dosen't listen to his father's words. Thorfinn ends up falling down the same dark path the past Thors had , by killing so many fathers, sons, and brothers /innocences. Thorfinn as a youth in season 1 was not able to see the wise words his changed father was trying to express to him. Thors wanted better for Thorfinn. Thors didn't want Thorfinn to fall down the wrong path like he had in his past, the past him, before he had his childern and wife. When he had his first child and wife, he started to realize he had something to protect . He realized how truly valuable life is . So much so, Thors didn't want to be apart of that life anymore. So he deserted and went to Iceland with his family.

@@OctavianAsix Dawg Demon Slayer is mainstream no offense. What do you mean lol? Not enough people gave Vinland Saga season 2 a chance, season 2 is great, but everyone dog piled on it for not being what they wanted it to be. It has great writting and great characters. However, alot of people hating on Vinland Saga S2 were never into or interested in a story like Vinland Saga in the first place . Which is rich how so many people seem to not understand that season 1 has the same themes as season 2. It just further expanded upon said themes in season 2. Even Askeladd hated Vikings and didn't like war, but due to his circumstances and his anger he became the very thing he hated "Vikings ".
@foregroundeclipse8725 Жыл бұрын
@@OctavianAsix If anything Vinland Saga season 2 is extremely underrated. Not enough people talk about this Anime either. I hear more people talk about Demon Slayer, Chainsawman (etc) constantly more than Vinland Saga. Vinland Saga definitely isn't mainstream and it doesn't get enough recognition unfortunately. Which is a shame, because it's wonderfully written. Not trying to be cynical here, but I believe Vinland Saga is more deserving of some of the spot light than Demon Slayer. Demon Slayer hogs all the spot light from other Anime .

Considering the medicine they had back then Arnheid had no chance. Her unborn child died and normally the body would push out dead „material“. But she was so beaten that I am not sure her body was still able to do that. So the baby would have stayed inside her and leading to blood poisoning. It is so sad but she would have died anyways, even if she would have survived the injuries.

When you think about it...all this happened because of Askeladd. Thorfinn turned bad because of Askeladd, Canute turned bad because of Askeladd. And Ketil was protected by the former king, who was killed by Canute so Ketil losing his protection and wealth is because of Askeladd too. It all comes from Askeladd. Arnheim could've been saved if it wasn't for Askeladd because Ketil wouldn't have gone crazy

I still like Ketil. You have to think about this character in historical context. He is a slave owner that gave freedom to alot of slaves, just that makes him special for his time. Him fighting and going crazy after losing everything does justify his actions, but what else would anyone else have done, its the most human reaction to losing what you have and the real primate would come out no matter the person. He will learn and become a better person, or maybe a drunk old man we will see.

Imagine a housewife, who uses her husband, children and servants to defend her home and keep everything safe. Is she an idiot, a piece of shit, or just another human on earth trying to ensure her safety. Somehow I see something deeper in this war, even with certain defeat. This is one of the greatest values of our society, to kill yourself for the greater good. It is a pity that all the heroism of those who are defending his property and his, here is on the more morbid and disgusting side. Still, it's interesting to appreciate all prisms.
