North Florida here . Overcast today.I like how you show just 12 colors. I’m always scrabbling back looking through my pastels. I’m going to try to have my colors picked out first.

About 7 sets. I have found so much joy in all the genres I have experimented with. I think watercolors will give the a lot more satisfaction. For my friends it will be time together once a month Hopefully. For my family my niece and her 2 daughters will have to work with me via live video. For my sister who is an amazing artist with oil painting, I want her to discover the incredible effects she can achieve with other mediums. Makes me a little nervous because I am a novice. I know we will all get thru this together. I did not spend 2+ years watching videos without gaining so much knowledge about what I wanted to do. Now

Nicely done! I was also thinking that you were going to paint the painting with a general pastel set of 12 “regular” sticks. I am learning select my pastels after I complete my value sketch. I am not sure if I would attempt to make a painting with only 12 sticks no matter how many I have to choose from! Thank you for sharing, Please keep going and stay safe.

Thank you for this video,I am new to pastels and wonder why you need to underpaint ,thanks again for this beautiful painting
@monetcafe Жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it! The reason I often will tone a surface with an under painting color is because it creates color contrast. Often I use a color that is complementary to the main colors in the reference image. This makes the colors feel more alive and I try to leave little bits of the underpaintings peeking through. It leads to color, excitement, and Energy.

I am always so impressed by people who draw whitout using a pencil. They draw using oil pain, acrylic paint, soft pastels,oil pastels or whit chunks or blocks of charcole so impressed😱 if i did that you,ll see only a big blob of colours or black🤣🤣

On the foreground grasses you used a complementary color for the underpainting, but in the sky you went straight to the cerulean blue. How do you decide what colors to start with?
@monetcafe2 жыл бұрын
That’s a great question Sharon, and one that I get often. Determining under painting colors can have a bit of a strategy, but sometimes it’s just intuitive. You were very observant that I didn’t put a warm color as an underpainting in the sky, but sometimes I do. Often I will lay down the underpainting according to value… For example, darker warm tones in the foreground middle warm tones in the middle ground, and light warm tones in the sky. But sometimes I’ll just tones the whole board one color. And then like in this video I might just start painting the sky without an under paining. So lots of strategies work, I always recommend to play with studies first and experiment.

What is an under painting and why would you would need to use it
@monetcafe2 жыл бұрын
I love using underpaintings because I feel they add to a colorful and loose energy prior to adding detail. The goal is for the underpainting to peek through a bit and create a nice base. It’s also a way to lay down your major big shapes and values and colors which acts as a roadmap for the painting. I love using vibrant colors for under paintings because they influence the final piece in a dramatic and beautiful way.

It's not just Florida. I'm in SC and Uart always curls at the edges. So annoying.

That's what I've been hearing. I have recently started using Fisher pastel paper. It's literally just like UArt but doesn't curl AT ALL! yay! I buy it from www.proartpanels.com

Not a big deal if your 12 pastels are chosen from hundreds specifically for the particular landscape and are making a harmonic palette. Try to paint a landscape using a box of 12 pastels which is on sale. That would be a challenge :D
@monetcafe3 жыл бұрын
I do understand your point. A lot of sets, especially those on sale, don’t have the best selections. But I have found a few smaller sets that are quite capable of painting landscapes. I’ll have to make a video sharing these.
@OksOksanium3 жыл бұрын
@@monetcafe, actually, that was my thought when I saw the name of the video, that you are using a box of 12 pastels ))) I think it would be an interesting challenge - to make a colorful (!) landscape - not duotone or three tons, which also would be too simple)
